UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE...
DENNIS H. BENNETT, OF ALLENDALE, MICHIGAN.
MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,024, dated October 4, 1887.
Application filed February 10, 1887. Serial No. 227,193. (No model.)
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a mechanical movement or means for converting motion derived from a prime mover; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts whereby the power is exerted with greater effeet for certain uses, which I will now proceed to describe.
Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a
plan View.
In the drawings, A represents a steam-engine or other prime mover.
B is a connecting-rod, which connects the piston-rod to a crank-pin on awheel, C. This wheel is rigidly keyed to a shaft, D, that carries at the other end a band-wheel, E, of larger diameter than wheel 0.
F is an endless belt, which connects bandwheel E with a similar wheel, G, on a shaft, L. On the opposite ends of this shaft L are fly-wheels I I, of still larger diameter, which are connected by crank-pins at the outer periphery with connecting-rods H H, and which latter at their upper ends are jointed to horizontal levers J J, fulcrumed on standards K K. The object in duplicating the rods Hand connecting them to the wheels I on opposite sides of the center of the shaft is to preserve an equilibrium or balance in the movement, one lever J descending while the other rises, and vice versa.
Now, when the prime mover is set in mid tion the shaftD is rotated with band-wheel E, and this, through belt F, imparts a high speed to the wheels G and I I on shaft L, and these wheels I I, through the rods H and'levers J, produce a rapid and powerful oscillating motion, which may be utilized for various industrial purposes requiring such motion, or be converted into a rotary motion through conmeeting-rods M and a crank-shaft, N.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new isa The combination of the standards K K, 1evers J J, connecting-rods H H, and the shaft L, with band-wheel G and fly-wheels I I, the said rods being connected to the flywheel upon opposite sides of the center, and a belt, F, for transmitting power from a prime mover, substantially as shown and described.
DENNIS H. BENNETT.
