MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,074, dated December 7, 1886.
Application led August 10, 1886. Serial No.210,5'13. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES S. SWAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mongaup Valley, in the county of Sullivan and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Movements; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which Yit appertains to make and use thesarne, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specilication.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of an elevation of one side of niy invention. Fig. 2 is a view taken from the opposite side, partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line x x. Fig. l, and Fig. iis a simi lar section on the line y y, Fig. l.
My invention relates to mechanical movements for operating any light machinerysuch, for instance, as stone-Crushers, grindstones, or coffee-mills; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim. y
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the frame of the machine, having its side beams, B C, slotted longitudinally at D E ou parallel lines. The frame A is provided beneath the side beams, B C, with parallel rack-bars F G, said rackbars being provided in the front portions of their upper edges with teeth H. rIhe rear portions of the rack-bar F G are provided with longitudinal slots K L, which are opposite and parallel to each other.
rl`he side beam, B, is provided at its front end with a power-wheel, M, which is connected by a pitman-rod, N, to the shaft P of adouble segmental rocking-gear, Q. the teeth of which engage the teeth H ofthe raclrbars F G, said teeth H being in the upper edges of the front.
`arm T to guide it in its reciprocal movements.`
The cross-arm T is connected by a rod, W, with a steam-engine or other motor, so that power may be communicated frein the same to the mechanical movement.
In attaching my improvements to any of the above-named machines it is only necessary to place the pulley-band over the power-wheel M; or the shaft of' this wheel might be extended and provided with a crank-arm to be connected with the drive-wheel of the machine to he operated.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination, with the frame composed of the slotted parallel side beams and the slotted rack-hars, of the power-wheeljournaled on an extension of the frame and connected to the shaft of the double segmental gear by a pitman-rod, the strap-arms connecting the segmental gear with the pitman-rod T, and the cross arm working in the slotted rack-bars, substantially as specitied.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES S. SVAN.
