(Cl. 131-182) This invention relates broadly to devices, known as cigarette holders, for holding a cigarette while it is being smoked and, more particularly, has to do with cigarette holders of the type in which a cigarette is positioned within the holder to act as a iilter for the smoke.

Cigarette holders of the described type to which the invention particularly relates are now known and comprise a barrel part in which the filter cigarette is placed and in the outer end of which the cigarette being smoked is received and releaseably held. Many of these known holders have means incorporated therein, such as a fingeroperated slide and pusher, for ejecting the butt of the smoked cigarette, but no known device of this type has any means for ejecting the lter cigarette, and it has been found that the removal of the filter cigarette is an unpleasant, dirty and sometimes dicult operation which must be performed with the lingers. It has accordingly been the principal object of the invention to provide means in a cigarette holder of the described type for ejecting the butt of the cigarette being smoked and also for ejecting the lilter cigarette whenever it is desired to do so in order to replace it with a new filter cigarette. A further object of the invention has been to provide a single, unitary means which is operable in one ldirection to eject the smoked cigarette butt and in the opposite direction to eject the ilter cigarette. A still further object of the invention has been to provide a cigarette holder of the described type having means associated therewith for releasably holding both the cigarette being smoked and the filter cigarette,'together with means for selectively ejecting either of the cigarettes. Other objects and features of the invention will be made apparent by the following description of the invention, the annexed drawings and the appended claims.

A cigarette holder embodying the present invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which:

Fig. l is a side elevational view of a cigarette holder according to the invention;

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the holder shown in Fig. l, but rotated through 90 about its longitudinal axis;

Fig. 3 is an enlarged partial sectional view of parts of the holder disclosed in Figs. l and 2, showing the ejecting means in its position when removing the smoked cigarette butt;

Fig. 4 is a view which is similar to Fig. 3 but shows the ejecting means in its position when removing the lter cigarette, and

Fig. 5 is an end view of the cigarette holding end of the holder illustrated in Figs. l to 4.

A preferred embodiment of a cigarette holder according to my invention is illustrated in the drawings and comprises a cylindrical barrel 2 which is of sufcient length and inner diameter to receive a usual cigarette 4 which is adapted to lilter the smoke passing from a smoked cigarette 6 to the smokers mouth. At one end of the barrel 2 is a mouthpiece 8 which is so attached to the barrel that these parts are normally held together ice Z firmly but may be easily separated. The mouthpiece 8 is provided with a central longitudinal smoke duct. At the outer end of the barrel 2 there is provided a cigarette holding member 20 which is cylindrical in shape and of such outer diameter that it is slidably but frictionally received within the barrel 2. In the normal positions of the parts, as when a cigarette is being smoked, the outer end part of the holding member 20 protrudes from the outer end of the barrel and is inwardly crimped adajcent its outer exposed end, as shown at 22, to tightly receive the end of the smoked cigarette 6. In this normal position of the parts the inner end part of the holding member 20 is positioned within the barrel 2 and extends a relatively short distance toward the mouthpiece end of the barrel. Between its ends and at a position'which is normally within the barrel the holding member 20 is inwardly crimped, as shown at 24, to tightly but releasably receive and hold an end of the lter cigarette 4. Between this crimped part 24 and the inner end of the holding member 20 this wall of the holding member is preferably partially cut away as shown at 26 to provide a tapered part of arcuate cross-section extending from the crimped part 24 to the inner end of the holding member. The end of the cigarette to be smoked may be inserted into the outer end of the holding member 29 yand will be held there by the crimped part 22 of the holding member, and a filter cigarette within the barrel 2 vwill be firmly but releasably held at its one end by the crimped part 24 of the holding member.

An annular pusher member 39 surrounds the holding member 2i) adjacent the outer end thereof in a position outside the outer end of the barrel 2. The annular member may be moved longitudinally of the holding member 20 and is kept from removal from the outer end of the holding member by a bead 32 which is formed on the outer end edge of the holding member. An ejecting member 34 is attached to this slidable pusher member and comprises a piece of wire which is attached at its one end at 36 to the pusher member and extends therefrom through an elongated slot or aperture 38 in the wall of the holding member 20 and terminates in an annular part 40 which is positioned within the holding member and lies in a plane which is normal to the longitudinal axis of the holding member. The slot or aperture 38 extends longitudinally of the holding member from a point adjacent the outer end thereof to a point approximately midway of the length of the holding member where it is turned circumferentially of the holding member for a short distance, as shown at 42, and then continues longitudinally of the holding member to a point adjacent the end of the tapered part 26 of the holding member 26. Thus, the slot 38 comprises two sections 44, 45 which together extend longitudinally of the holding member substantially from end to end thereof and which are connected by a circumferentially extending oiset part 42.

In use, the parts are initially placed as shown in Fig. 2, in which the mouthpiece 3 is attached to one end of the barrel 2, the inner end of the holding member 20 is within the outer end of the barrel, the annular pusher member 30 surrounds the holding member 20 with one edge .in contact with the outer end of the barrel 2, and the ejecting member 34 is positioned within the holding member 20. The mouthpiece is now removed from the barrel and a filter cigarette 4 is inserted into the barrel until its end is received within the crimped part 24 of the holding member, thus rmly but releasably attaching the filter cigarette within the holding member. lf desired, the lter cigarette may be placed within the barrel by leaving the mouthpiece in place on the barrel, removing the holding member 20 from the outer end of the barrel, inserting an end of the lilter cigarette into the inner end 26 of the holding member until it is received Within the avances crimped part 24, and Vthen replacing the holding member within the outer end of the barrel with the iilter cigarette within the barrel. VWhen the iilter cigarette Vis in place within the barrel one end of the cigarette 6, which is to be smoked, is inserted into the outer end of the holding member-24) where it will be firmly but releasably held by the crimped part 22. When the cigarette 6 has been smoked the butt may be removed by sliding the annular pusher member 30 from its normal position adjacent the end of the 1 barrel 2, which position is shown in Fig. 2, toward thc outer end of the holding member 20, i. e. in a direction away from the barrel, to its fully extended position as shown in Fig. 3. As the pusher member is so moved it carries with it the wire ejecting member 34 `the annular part 40 of which pushes the butt of the cigarette 6 from the holding member, as shown |in Fig. 3. it it is desired to remove the filter cigarette 4 from the barrel the holding member 2t) is removed from the outer end of the barrel and will carry the filter cigarette with it. The annular pusher member 30 is now rotated slightly to cause the wire ejecting device 34 to move across the oiset part 42 of the slot 38, after which the pusher member is moved toward the inner end part 26 of the holding member along the section 46 of the slot 38, thus moving the annular part 46 of the wire ejecting member against the end of the lter cigarette and ejecting the iilter cigarette fromthe holding member. Another ilter cigarette may now be placed in the holding member in the described position after which the holding member and the fresh z filter cigarette are replaced :in the barrel in the position shown in Fig. 2. While I have described and illustrated certain forms which my invention may take, it will be apparent to those skilled in the artrthat other embodiments, as well as modifications of those disclosed, may beV made and practised without departing in any way from the spirit or scope off the invention, for the limits of which reference must be made to the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1- A cigarette holder comprising a barrel part of suicient length and diameter to receive a iilter cigarette a mouthpiece at one end of the barrel part, a cylindrical cigarette holding member slidable and removably positioned within the other end of the barrel and having an end part protruding from the barrel to receive the end of a cigarette being smoked and having another part positioned within the barrel to receive the end of a filter cigarette, ejecting means disposed within the cigarette holding member between the ends thereof, and means for selectively moving said ejecting means longitudinally of the cigarette holding member toward either end thereof to eject either the cigarette being smoked or the filter cigarette.

2. A cigarette holder according to claim l in which each end part of the cigarette holding member has an inwardly crimped portion adapted to provide means for- .tightly but releasably holding .the ends of the cigarette being smoked and the iilter cigarette.

A cigarette holder comprising a barrel part of sui- Y cient length and diameter to receive a filter cigarette, a mouthpiece at one end of the barrel pant, a cylindrical cigarette holding member frictionally slidable and removably positioned within the other end of' the barrel and having an inner end part protruding from the barrel to receive the end of a cigarette being smoked and having an inner end part Within .the barrel to receive the end of a filter cigarette, a slot extending longitudinally of said cigarette holding member, an annular pusher memoer surrounding the cigarette holding member for sliding 5'.
