ORNAMENTAL CHAIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,454, dated May 29, 1883.
Application filed February 8, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom "it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN BRADFORD PEGK, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain .new and useful Improvements in Ornamental Chains; and I do hereby declare the following u to be a full, clear, and exact description otthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a class of chain bracelets in which a band of the desired length to form the bracelet is made up of an assei'nblage of links or rings arranged in straight rows longitudinally of the hand, the links bf one row alternating with those of the next, in order that the spaces between the links of one row may be met by the links of the next adjacent row, the entire series of links being bound together by wires passing through the interlocking links, the construction of the band being such that the fastening-wires are secured in place by inserting their ends in v ends of the wires.

In the said drawings, A A represent the series of rows of links of the band, arranged as before explained. To secure theselinks to getlicr, single wires may be employed, and each end of a wire secured to a disk, as explained. Preparatory to passing the arms a a of these staples through the links, I deposit oneot' the disks 0 in the bend of the staple, as shown in Fig. 1, thus providing a head to overlap two outer contiguous links of the band. The legs of the staples are now passed through the interlocking links of the band, as shown in Fig. 1, and inserted in the notches ofanother series ofdisks, D D, &c., as shown in Figs. 1 and 3,and-thc sides of the notches pinched tightly upon the wires, thereby confining the latter in place without the use of solder.
Toimpart afinished appearance to the band, I cover each disk 0 with a cap, E, which tightly incloses and conceals it and the wires. The ends of the staple maybe prolonged and bent over and down upon the outer face of the disk greater security. This bending 0f the wire, however, tends to bind the links of the band too tightly, thereby interfering with the flexibility or pliability of the chain. By simply inserting the end of the wire in the notches of the disks and pinching the metal 1 upon them the links may remain loosely upon one another, and a very pliablechain obtained.
