Description

(ModeL) S. LEAR.
SASH HOLDER No. 278,439. Patented May 29,1883.
N PETERS. Pholo-Lllhognpber, Wuhingim D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL LEAR, OF POTTSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
SASH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,439, dated May 29, 1883.
Application filed March 6, 1883. (ModeL) To all whom z'tmay concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL LEAR, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Pottsville, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash Lo'cks, of which the following is a specification.
I My invention relates to improvements in devices for locking window-sashes; and my oh- 1o ject-s are to providea means for holding the sash in any desired position, and to keep the sash from shaking or rattling. I attain these objects by use of the mechanism illustrated in p the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a full view of my sash-lock as applied to a window-sash. Fig.2 is a top view, having the'top cut away to show its arrangement of parts and construction; and Fig. 3 is a front edge view, having a part cut away to show the device for securing immovably the whole device.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in all the views. a
To construct my device I take the plate B, having the flange B and the lugor stop B all combined in one piece, andsecure it to the sash by means of a screwor any suitable fastening. In the case A, I adjust an elasticsubup, the elastic substanceX holding firmly and yet preventing the marring or destruction of the window-frame. ,By pressing on the lever O the case A is moved, the screw D acting as a pivot, thus releasing the sash-lock from en- I gaging with the wind0w-frame and allowing the sash to be either raised or lowered at will.
As soon as the hand is removed from thelever G the spring S acts and forces the case A back I against the window-frame. To further insure the locking of the sash, I provide a supplemental fastening in the shape of a small bolt device,in which E is the bolt, K a bolt-hole .in the plate B, L a spring to force the bolt shot into the hole K in the plate B the sashlock is sofastened'that it cannot be moved. This supplemental fastening I place on the lower left-hand corner of the case A, as shown.
It does not fasten the sash, but is intended to 3 f fasten togetherthe case A and the base-plate B, so that the sash-lock remains firm and cannot be operated until the fastening is released. The lug B is used. as a stop to prevent the device from being wedged too tightly against the window-frame.
My devicemay be used either with or without the supplemental fastening device.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The within-describedsash-lock, consisting of the stationary plate B, having flanged side B and lug or stop B in combination with the case A, having the lever (J and elastic substance X, the spring S, held behind flange B and upper flange of A,a.nd the screw D, asshown and set forth.
2. In the within -described sashlock, the combination of the case A, having lever U and elastic substance X, the plate B, having l'ug B and flanged side B the spring S, v and the screw D, with the supplemental fastening-bolt, all combined and arranged as shown and set forth.
