J. BENJ. KATZNER ATTORNEY United States Patent COVER FOR CUSHION IN UPHOLSTERED FURNITURE Jacob Benjamin Katzner, Baltimore, Md., assignor to Moses W. Rosenfeld and Harry B. Gorfine, Trustees, Baltimore, Md.
Application August 23, 1954, Serial No. 451,451
6 Claims. (Cl. 155-182) This invention relates to covers for cushions in upholstered furniture and the like.
Upholstered furniture usually comprises a separate, removable cushion, and when covers are provided for such furniture, it is the usual practice to include with the cover for the upholstered chair a separate cover for the cushion. These cushion covers are ordinarily made in the form of a casing with some means, such as a drawstring or an elastic tape, for drawing and closing the casing on the cushion. Inasmuch as these cushions vary substantially in size and differ in shape, it is difficult, if not almost impossible, to adjust these prior casings on a cushion so as to obtain a neat, snug fit without gathers. Further, the casings heretofore furnished as cushion covers, are somewhat diificult to launder so as to obtain a smooth finish.
It is the primary purpose of the instant invention to provide for a cushion in upholstered furniture, an improved cover which will overcome the aforesaid disadvantages of prior cushion covers, which will fit any size cushion snugly and neatly, and which can be laundered with ease.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cover which can be readily placed properly on and secured to a cushion without distorting the proper shape of the latter.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved cushion cover embodying means which will facilitate its conformance to the cushion to which it is applied.
Other objects as well as the advantages and novel features of construction of my new cover will appear from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing one manner in which a preferred embodiment of the invention may be applied to a cushion;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cover and cushion in reversed position from that of Fig. 1, and showing the cover in an unwrapped condition;
Fig. 3 is a partial perspective view of the left hand front corner of the cover and cushion, as viewed in Fig. 2, and showing an initial step in wrapping the cover on the cushion;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 and shows the cover completely wrapped at the corner illustrated;
Fig. 5 is a partial perspective view of the right hand front corner of the cover and cushion, as viewed in Fig. 2, and illustrates a step in applying the cover to such corner;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of the invention in unwrapped condition on a cushion;
Fig. 7 is a partial perspective view of the left hand front corner of the cover and cushion, as viewed in Fig. 6, and showing an initial step in wrapping the cover on the cushion.
Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 7 showing the next step in the wrapping operation.
"ice
Fig. 9 is a view similar to Figs. 7 and 8, and shows the cover completely wrapped on the said corner.
Fig. 10 is a perspective view of another embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 11 is a partial perspective view of the left hand front corner of the cover, as viewed in Fig. 10, and showing an initial step in wrapping the cover on a corner of a small cushion;
Fig. 12 is a view similar to Fig. 11 showing the cover completely wrapped on such cushion cover; and
Fig. 13 is a view similar to Fig. 11 illustrating the appearance of the cover on such corner of a larger cushion.
Referring now more particularly'to Figs. 1 to 5 of the drawings, the cover illustrated therein is composed of three panels including two cover panels A and B and a front panel C which is connected to panels A and B at the front of the cover. Although either panel A or B may constitute the top covering panel for a cushion D, in the following description panel A shall be referred to as the top panel and panel B, the bottom panel. The top panel A and bottom panel B are similar in size and shape, being constituted of two rectangular blanks of fabric of equal size. Panels A and B are of a size greater than the top of the largest sized cushion of the particular type for which the cover has been designed. These two panels are connected together along one side edge by a seam I; the other side and rear edges of such panels being free and disconnected and the front edges of such panels being connected together by the front panel C.
The front panel C is an elongated, substantially rectangularly-shaped strip having a width substantially equal to the width of the cushions to be covered. The longitudinal edge portions of panel C are connected to the front edges of the covering or top and bottom panels A and B by seams extending from the free side edges of panels A and B to points short of the connected side edges of panels A and B. The front edges of the connected side edge portions of panels A and B are connected to one end edge of panel C by a seam designated 2. It will thus be seen that panels A, B and C form a corner pocket into which a cushion may be inserted readily from the rear or side of the cover. The connected side edge portions of panels A and B have a combined width or depth substantially equal to the width of panel C. Panel C and the portions of panels A and B connected to the longitudinal edges of panel C have a length or dimension preferably about four inches greater than the width of the largest sized cushion for which the cover is designed. Panels A and B in a direction to the rear of panel C also preferably have a dimension about four inchesgreater than the depth of the largest sized cushion on which the cover is to be fitted.
At the junctures of the longitudinal edges of panel C with panels A and B, and joined to the cover by the seams connecting such parts are cords 3, 3 covered by welting material 4, 4. These welted cords provide an attractive finished appearance to the front of the cover, but are chiefly included to provide stiffening members for facilitating a proper folding or wrapping of the cover on a cushion. Thus, when a cushion D has been inserted into the casing in the manner shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the stiffened elements formed by the projecting ends of the welted cords may be bent around the forward portion of a side face 5 of the cushion in the manner shown in Fig. 3 with such cords extending in parallelly-spaced fashion along the top and bottom side edges of such face 5 to fix the cushion in proper, snug relation onthe cushion. When once that has been done, the cover may be readily wrapped on the cushion in the following manner:
With the projecting ends of the welted cords lined in parallelism with and against the top and bottom side edges of the cushion face under tension, and with the projecting portion of panel C flat against the side face 5 of the cushion under tension, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the projecting side edge portion of bottom panel B is folded against such side face of the cushion and then the projecting side edge portion of top panel A is folded over and against the folded side edge portion of panel B, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The folded parts are then secured together and preferably to the cushion by a plurality of fat -.=.ing members 6. While any suitable form of securing means may be utilized, it also is preferred that each member be composed of a spiral-shaped pin having a head which may be decorative as well as hand manipulative. With the front and sides of the cover placed in position on the cushion, the user may then enclose the back end of the cushion by first folding under tension, the rear ends of the overlapped side edge portions of panels A and B against the rear face 7 of the cushion, as shown in Fig. 5, and then folding the projecting connected side edge portions of panels A and B in a similar fashion against such rear face (note Fig. l). The projecting rear edges of panels A and B are then folded in overlapped relation against the cushion face 7' in the manner explained with respect to the projecting side edges of such panels and secured in position on the cushion by fastening members 3 similar in construction to the members 6.
It will be understood that the projecting ends of the stiffening members or welted cords may be manipulated in other fashions than the method previously described to initiate the placement of the cover on the cushion so that a proper fitting is finally obtained. Thus, as shown in Figs. 7 to 9 of the drawings in respect to the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 6, the projecting end of one of the cords may be positioned vertically along and against the front edge of the cushion face 5 under tension (note Fig. 7), then the projecting end of the other cord placed alongside one of the longitudinal edges of such cushion face under tension and so that the folded projecting portion of the front panel overlies the projecting side edge of the bottom panel B (note Fig. 8), and then the projecting side edge of the top panel A folded over panel B, as shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings.
The embodiment shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings differs from that previously described, in that the panels A, B are not joined by a seam 1 along one side edge thereof and in that the panel C is made of a length equal to the width of panels A and B. The welted cords 3 along the junctions of panels A, C and B, C also have a length equal to the length of panel C so that when this form of the cover is placed on a cushion, both ends thereof project outwardly from the cushion and may be manipulated in the manner shown in Figs. 3 and 4 or in Figs. 7 to 9, or in any-other manner, to initiate the proper placement of the cover on the cushion in the wrapping thereof on the latter. The rear projecting edge portions of the panels A and B may be wrapped on the cushion in the manner described with respect to the embodiment of Fig. 2 or in any other suitable fashion.
It will be apparent that both of the above described embodiments of the invention can be readily fitted to cushions of widely varying sizes and configurations snugly and neatly and without danger of producing any undesirable gatherings in the exposed faces of the covered cushions. Due to its readily manipulatable construction and the tension which may be applied to the stiffening elements or cords, the cover can be made to conform exactly to the shape of the cushion to be covered with a facility that is not possible with heretofore known covers. As the cover is locked in position on the cushion under tension, it will maintain a smooth, unwrinkled condition even under relatively rough usage. The covers can readily be disassembled from the cushion by removing.
the fastening members and whipping it off the cushion. Due to their open construction, they can be easily laundered as should be quite evident.
The above described embodiments have been designed to fit the largest sized cushion in a range of sizes. It may also be desirable to design the cover to fit the smallest sized cushion in a range of sizes. When so designed, the cover of the invention may have the construction illustrated in Figs. 10 and 13 of the drawings. This cover, like the previously described embodiments, is composed of a top panel A, a bottom panel B and a front panel C". Like the embodiment of Fig. 2 the panels A" and B are connected together along one side edge by a seam 1', the other side and rear edges of such panels being free and the front edges of such panels being connected to the longitudinal edges of the front panel C". The front edges of the connected side edge portions of panels A" and B" may be connected to one end of panel C in the manner shown in Fig. 2 or such end may be provided with a tapering extension 10 to which such edges are connected, as is shown in Fig. 10 of the drawings. The extension 10 therefore will overlie the forward portion of one side of a cushion. The cords covered by the welting material 4" extending along the longitudinal edges of panel C" are extended along the edges of the extension 10 and terminate at the apex of such extension and at one end of the seam 1. Thus, in this construction the tapered end of panel C" and the joined edge portions of panels A and B form a pocket for one front corner of the cushion.
The seams connecting the longitudinal front edges of panel C to panels A" and B extend from the extension 10 thereof to the points 11 a distance substantially equal to the length of the front edge of the narrowest cushion for which the cover is designed. From the points 11, 11 to the apex of the extension 12 in the other end of the front panel C", such panel C is free and disconnected from panels A" and B". As will be seen from Figs. 10 to 13 of the drawings, extension 12 is of sufiicient length to be wrapped around the other side of a cushion D, being long enough to be wrapped around such other side of the widest cushion D in the range of cushion sizes for which a particular covering is designed. The extension 12 is tapered at its end in a manner similar to extension 10 and the cords and welting material 4 extend to the apex of such extension 12.
As shown more clearly in Fig. 10 of the drawings, the front edges of the panels A" and B beyond the points 11, 11 are provided with forwardly projecting extensions 14 and 13 respectively, which may be seamed thereto, as shown, or formed integral therewith. These extensions 13 and 14 enable the top and bottom panels to be properly adjusted on a cushion D, whether such cushion be the narrowest or the widest in the range of cushion sizes for which the cover has been constructed. Figs. 11 and 12 of the drawings, show the manner in which the extensions 12, 13 and 14 are adjusted to the front corner of the: narrowest cushion. As shown in Fig. 11, the projecting side edge portion of bottom panel B" is first folded against theside face 5 of the cushion D and then the extension 13 thereof is folded against the front face of the cushion under panel C". In a similar manner, the projecting side edge portion of top panel A is folded on the cushion side face 5 to overlapv the folded edge portion of panel B, and extension 14 of panel A" is folded on the front face. of the cushion under panel C to overlap extension 13. The extension 12 is then folded on cushion face 5, as shown in Fig. 12 and with the welted cords placed against the top and bottom of such face under tension, the extension is secured in position by a fastening member 6. If the cushion is wider than the cushion indicated in Figs. 11 and 12, the extensions 13 and 14 may be first folded partly over the front face of the cushion and partly over the side face 5 thereof in the manner shown in Fig. 13. The projecting side edge portions of the panels A" and B" are then folded in overlapping relation on the cushion side face 5, after which the extension 12 is placed partly on the front face of the cushion and partly on the side face 5 thereof in the manner previously described.
While in the embodiment illustrated in Figs. to 13, I have shown the extension 12 made with a tapered end, it will be understood that such extension may terminate in a straight end so that the welted cords thereof may be manipulated in the manners indicated in Figs. 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 to wrap the cover on the cushion. It will be apparent to the art that other changes and modifications may be made to the disclosed embodiments without departing from the spirit of the invention. Hence, I do not wish to limit myself to such constructions, but intend to cover all constructions coming within the scope of the following claims.
