SPRING BED-BOTTOM.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,652, dated May 15, 1883. Application filed April 7, 1883, (No model.)

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JAMES AINSLIE and ROBERT AINsLIn, citizens of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of-Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms, of which the followingis a specification.

This invention relates to that class of spring bed-bottoms in which two frames composed of metal bands or slats are connected together by spiral springs and the bed-bottom hinged at the middle, so that it can be folded for transportation.

- The object ofourimprovement is to strengthen the structure and to arrange and construct the parts so as to provide a convenient and desirable spring bed-bottom.

To such end our invention consists in a spring bed bottom having its ends and side slats connected together by metallic cornerpieces, with its side rails made in sections, which are hinged together at one or more points by butt-hinges or suitable pivot-connections, and its springs connected to the top and bottom slats of the two frames by means of their bent ends entering perforations in the slats, said members being connected and organized substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

Figure 1 represents a top view of the spring bed-bottom. Fig. 2is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 illustrates one of the corner-pieces detached.

A A indicate the two frames of the spring bed-bottom. Each one of these frames con sists of the long outer side slats, B, the outer end slats, G, the cross slats D, and the longitudinal slats E, which can be interlaced, if desired. The longitudinal slats are riveted at their ends to the end slats, and the cross-slats are fastened at their ends, in a similar manner, to the side rails. The end and side rails meet at their terminals, and are riveted together to constitute the corners of the frames. As the fastenings at the corners of the frames are liable to become loose, we provide for each corner of the frames an angular metal strengthening-plate, F, which is riveted or otherwise fastened to the meeting ends of the end and side slats, thus holding said slats securely together and strengthening the structure. The frames are connected by means of the spiral springs G, which have their ends carried over the cross-slats and then bent inwardly at right angles and inserted in perforations formed in said slats. fastening, and admits of the springs being readily applied. The spring bed-bottom thus formed is divided at the middle and its two halves or sections hinged together, so that the bed-bottom can be folded for transportation. This is effected by dividing each frame into two parts and connecting the side and intermediate longitudinal slats by means of butt-hinges H, which, when the springs are disconnected, admit of the frames being folded.

By the above it will be seen that the bedbottom is strong and reversible, readily put to gether, and exceedingly simple in its structure.

We have herein shown the bedbottom di vided into two parts or halves by forming each outer side rail of each longitudinal rail of two sections; but it will be evident that they could' he made in more than two sections, and hence butthinges employed at more than one point.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim is- A spring bed-bottom as a structure, having its ends and side slats connected together by metallic corner-pieces, with its side rails made in sections hinged together at one or more points by butt-hinges, and its springs connected to the slats of the two frames by means of their bent ends entering perforations in the slats, said members being connected and organized substantially as described.
