NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM T. FUSON, OF GRISWOLD, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TC ARNOLD WALLIKER, OF SAME PLACE.
ATTACHMENT FOR BEDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,563, dated May 15, 1883.
Application filed March 17, 1883. (Model.) 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. FUsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Griswold, in the county of Cass and State ofIowa,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in AttachmentsforBeds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
7 and exact description of the same, reference provide such a device as will firmly hold the covers on the bed, and at the same time provide an additional means for keeping warm the feet of those occupying the same, which objects I attain by the construction substantially as shown in the accompanyingdrawings and hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, A represents the attachment or foot-board of a bed, consisting of two sections, B O, hinged together at a, said sections being upholstered upon their interior sides. The section B is provided with a baseplate, D, at right angles thereto, and side pieces, 1), these side pieces forming seats or stops for a hinged extension, 0, of the side pieces, 01, upon the section 0, said sections and their side pieces being ornamented, if so desired,;in any suitable man nor.
The attachment, when used upon beds of ordinary construction, is placed against thefootboard, with the base piece D resting on the springs or slats underneath the mattress, said mattress restin on this base piece between the side pieces, I). The covers of the bed, being tucked down around the mattress in the usual manner, are secured and prevented from being drawn or kicked up away from the feet of the occupant or occupants of the bed by the section 0 being brought down thereon, as
shown in Fig. 3, the upholstered interior sides of the sections keeping out the air and giving additional warmth to the feet.
WVhen not in use for the purpose above described, the section 0 is raised up and the hinged extensionsc ofthe side pieces, d, brought into place, as shown in Fig. 1, thus giving to the bed an ornamentalappearance, said hinged extensions assuming theposition shown in Fig. 2 when the section'is brought down upon the covers.
The attachment, as above described, can be readily manufactured and applied to any bed of the ordinary construction at a cost in proportion to its ornamentation.
Though I have described my invention more particularly as an attachment for the beds in ordinary use, it is evident that the foot-boards of new beds may be constructed in the manner above described, and thus provide a means for holding down the covers and giving additional warmth to the feet of the occupant or occupants of the bed without greatly increasing the cost of the ordinary foot-board.
' Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. An attachment or foot-board for beds, consisting of two upholstered sections hinged together, substantiallyas and for the purpose set forth.
2. An attachment or footboard for beds, consisting of two hinged sections upholstered upon their interior sides and provided with suitable side pieces, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
An attachment or footboard for beds, consisting of the hinged upholstered sections B O, base-piece D, side pieces, I) d, andlhinged extensions 0, substantially as and for the purpose deseribed.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM T. FUSON. Witnesses:
