END-GATE.
SPECIFIGAIION forming part 0f Letters ]?tent N0. 277,391, da.ted May 8, 1883.
Applieation filed Jzmnary 18, 1883. (N0 model.)
T0 all whom 'it mag; conce7n:
Be it; known that 1, JOHN H. WERDEN, of Winfield, in ehe county of Oowley and State 0f Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Encl-Gates and I de hereby declare the following to be a full, dem, and exact description 0f the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art 130 which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates t0 end gates for wag ons, the objeet being to provide an end-gate with devices 0f simple and durable construetion adapted to securely hold the gate in plaee, and t0 clamp the side-boards 0t' tl1e wagen thereto.
The invention consists in the features 0f coustruction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully deseribed, and pointed 01113 in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation 0f my improvement applied 130 a wagen, and Figs. 2 and 3 represent parts in detail.
A represents the end,- gate, prefembly cousisting 0f tw0 seet-ions, a and a, hinged together.
B representsaelent-board rigidly secured t0 one seetion 0f the gate A.
0 C represenl: the ends of the side-boards 0f the wagen, each proVided wibh a transverse slot, c, to receive the ends 0f the elamping bars, es shown.
-D D represent clamping-bars, the latter be ing arranged slightly below the former, but parallel therewith. The bar D is supported upon the eleat-board by a staple, d, and a screw, d, the letzter projecting through an elongated slot of seid bar. The 01'1ter end of the bar D projects through the slot c of the .adjacent end of the side;board, and is bent at a right angle to engage a catch-bar, E, seeured t0 the outer side 0f seid side-board. (See Fig. 2.) (Ehe innen end 0f the bar D is pivoted t0 tl1e upper end 0f a lever, F. The bar D is supported upon the eleat-board by staples e. The inner end 0f said bar is pivoted 110 the lever F below the bar D, and its outer end projeets throngh the slot 0 0f the oher side-board, and is provided with a nut, e, t0 regulate tl1e length 0f the bar. Seid nul: engages With the lugs g g of a slotted plate, G, seeured to the end of the side-board of the wagen. H represents a notched plate, seeured t0 the cleat board B for the purpose 0f engagiug a dog, I. This (10g is piv0td upon tl1e lever F, and is conneeted ab 0ne end t0 the lever by a spiral spring, n.
J represents an elongated staple o1 guard, secured 170 the cleat-board 0ver the lever transversely to limil; the movement thereof, and t0 protec Lhe workiug parts 0f the (levice.
T0 securely clamp the ends of the side-boards to the end-gate, it is onl y necessary to turn tl1e lever F to'the right, thus dmwing tl1e clamp in g-bars D and D inwardlyinto elose eontact With tl1e. eateh-bar E and platze G, tl1e dog I engaging with the notched plate to lock the bars in plaee.
T0 remove the gate, the (10g I is withdrawn from engagement witl1 the notched plate, thus allowing the lever F to be turned to the left 130 disengage the ends 0f the elamping-ba-rs.
lt; will be apparent that tl1e eonstruetion of Ehe devices thus deseribed is very simple and. durable, 2md their operation easy and effective.
. Havingfully described 1ny invention', whatl claim as new, and clesire t0 secure by Letters Patent, is
- 1. Tl1e eombination, with the end-gate and slotted side-boards, of a cleat-board and tWo clamping-bars secnred thereto, one prov:ided with an angular end, while the other is pr0- vided with a thiunb-nut, an operatzing-lever t0 which seid bars are pivoted, a notehed plat'e, and a spring-aetuated flog, snbstantially as sei; forth.
2. The coxnbination, with the endgate and slotted side-boards, the latter being provided respectively with a eatch-bar, und a plate having projectlng lugs, '0f two elamping-bars pivoted to an operating-lever, a notehed plante, and a springdog pivoted upon seid lever, substantially as sei: forth.
3. The combination, with the eleat-board and slotted side-boards, of a cla-mping-bar pivocecl to an operating-lever, and supported npon said cleai boardby a. staple, aud. screw, and slot, and providecl with a right-angular outer end, of a second. clamping-bar similarly specification in the presence of two subscribpivoted t0 the lever and supported in staples, ing witnesses. and profided ab its outer end' with a thumb- 1 JOHN H WEPDEN nut, a notched platt-e, and spring-dog, and a 5 staple 01 guard arranged transversely over the I Witnesses:
lever, substantially as S613 forth. i H. E. SILLIMAN,
In testimony whereof I have signed this l S. D. PRYOR.
