'NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EXTENSION-LOCK FOR DCORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,295, dated May 8, 1883. Application filed September 11, 1882. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN KUsTER, Jr., of
Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Locks and Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved rim-lock and latch for doors, by which the same can be conveniently applied to doors of different thicknesses, as the bar which forms the connection of the rim-lock and latch, can be adjusted without any trouble to the exact thickness of the door required without any filing and cutting of the same or loss of time in applying the connecting-bar to the lock and latch.
The invention consists of a rim-lock and I latch connected by an adjustable bar, which is centrally recessed, its side strips fitting into longitudinal side grooves of the plug of the rim-lock, to which it is attached by a suitable clamping device after the connecting-bar has been'adjusted to the thickness of the door.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical central section through myimproved rim-lock and latch for doors. Figs. 2 and 3 are, respectively, an end view and a vertical transverse section of the rimlock and Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section through the plug of the rim-lock, showin g the adjustable connecting-bar.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the rim-lock, and B the night-latch for doors, which are both made of any approved construction. They are applied, in the usual manner, to opposite sides OfthB door after a hole of proper dimensions has been bored through the same, and connected by bolts 0 O, which extend from the inner plate of the latch to screwsockets of the lock, the latch of the lock being furthermore connected with the look by a connecting-bar, D. This connecting-bar is provided with a longitudinal recess extending from one end of the same, so as to form two narrow side strips or prongs, d d, which enter into longitudinal recesses e c, of corresponding shape at both sides of the plug A of the rimlock A, as shown clearly in Figs. 3 and 4.
The recess in the connecting-bar D has to be made equal to the length of the plug A. A bracket plate, a, at the inner end of the plug A, serves, in connection with a washer, b, and screw-nut b, to rigidly clamp the connecting-bar D after the same has been adjusted as required by the thickness of the door, so as to properly connect the rim-plate and latch of the door. In place of the clamping device described, any other means may be employed for rigidly securing the connectingbar D in position after the same has'been adjusted for the required length.
If two recessed connecting-bars-a shorter and a longer one-are furnished, the rim-lock and latch may be applied to doors of difierent thicknesses, up to three inches, with the greatest ease by simply adjusting the connectingbar in the plug of the-rim-l0ck to the thickness of the door. Consequently no filing and cutting off of theconnecting-bar, or putting in a new connecting-bar, in case it has not been accuratelyfiled off, is necessary, so that carpeuters can apply the rim-locks and latches described quicker and easier than heretofore.
I am aware that the combination of a rimlock and night-latch by a connecting-bar is not broadly new, and I therefore do not claim the same.
I am aware that an extension-stem that connects the plug of a rim-lock with a latch at the opposite side of the door andmeans for adjusting the extension-stem to different thicknesses of door have been used heretofore, and I do not claim this feature, broadly.
Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of a rim-lock set into a mortise of the door, a night-latch secured to the opposite side of the same, and a longitudinally-recessed bar connecting the nightlatch and plug of the rim-lock, the side strips of the connecting-bar being guided in longitudinal grooves of the plug, and secured thereto by a suitable clamping device, substantially as set forth.
In testimonyjthat 1 claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN KUSTER, JR. \Vitnesses:
PAUL GOEPEL, SIDNEY MANN.
