Application August 1, 1955, Serial No.525,564
Claims. (Cl. 134-172 This invention is directed to improvements in dish-' washing machines and is particularly directed to a water pressure dishwasher having a collapsible hood arrangement particularly adapted to doing large volumes of dishes but Which may be folded up and easily putaside in a cabinet or drawer when not in use.
One of the primary objects of this invention is to provide an improved dishwashing machine having a collapsible top which may be readily swung up and over the dishes to be washed while at the same time providing adequate spray for the dishes both above and below the receptacle containing the dishes.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a full capacity dishwasher which may be folded up and put away with a minimum of space utilization.
Still another object of this invention is to provide an improved dishwashing machine with a novel top arrangement which may readily be swung up into operative position or withdrawn and folded downwardly for easy access to all the dishes in the apparatus.
Still another object of this invention is to provide an improved water pressure dishwasher particularly adapted for use on the sink top in conjunction with the regular sink in the kitchen and the like.
Further features and advantages of this invention will appear from a detailed description of the drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a dishwashing machine incorporating the features of this invention.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation similar to that of Fig. 1 but showing the top in retracted position.
As an example of one embodiment of this invention there is shown a water pressure dishwasher having a main base pan having a bottom 11 and the integral sides 12 and 13 and the ends 14 and 15. Suitable raised support brackets 16 fixed to the inside faces of the ends 14 and carry the dish-holding basket 17 in which are placed the dishes to be washed.
The top edges of the sides and ends is formed by an upturned flange 18 forming a ledge 19 around the upper portion of the base pan 19. A collapsible cover is formed of a series of ribs 20, 21 and 22 pivotally mounted to swing around an axis 23 on the upturned flange 18 at the sides 12 and 13 of the base pan 10. Suitable plastic cover material is connected to the outside of the ribs at 24, 25, 26 and 27. The plastic material portion 24 is secured water-tight along its lower edge to the ledge 19 between the axis of rocking 23 and the end 14 of the base pan 10. The other portion is connected to the swinging hoop or rib 28 having the manipulating handle 29. The entire assembly of the ribs 20, 21, and 22 and the plastic 24, 25 and 26 and 27 may be swung up over the dishes in the basket 17 as shown in Fig. 1 or swung back down in retracted position as shown in Fig. 5 for removal of the 2,771,895 Patented Nov. 27, 1956 dishes and for storage of the iinit walla of vertlply conduit is formedat 30 and-31 integral with the rib' 21 and in fact may preferably form said rib. It connects with a hinged fluid connection 32 with the pressure water supply pipe 33 which is preferably connected "to the hot water tap at the sink. 'There is also a fixed discharge line 34 from the hinge fluid connection 32 extending to the horizontal supply line 35 which terminates at the mid point of the bottom 11 of the base pan 10 to supply the lower spray element 36 located under the dish bas ket 17.
Thus, with the dishes loaded in th'e baske' t 17' the hood may be swung'u'p'by manipulationof the handle 29 from the'position shown in Fig. 5 to 'the position shown in Fig. 1 which automatically brings" the water sp a element 29iz'up centrally over'the dishes. Water pressure is then turned on in the line 33 and both of the spray elements 29a and 36 go to work rapidly to rinse ofl the dishes. A suitable drain spout may be provided at 37 in the bottom of the pan 10 which discharges into the sink for removal of the excess water and foreign matter from the dishes as they are washed ofl by the spray elements 29a and 36. At the completion of the dishwashing operation the water is turned off and the cover swung down to the position indicated in Fig. 5 for easy access to the dishes. Furthermore, it may be folded down completely to the top of the upturned flange 18 and the dish basket 17 placed back in the regular sink or otherwise disposed of so that the entire dishwashing unit may now be easily slipped into a drawer or cupboard with a very minimum of height from the bottom 11 to the top of the upturned flange 18 of the unit.
Thus there has been provided a highly efficient table top dishwashing machine which is collapsible for easy storage and access to the dishes.
While the apparatus herein disclosed and described constitutes a preferred form of the invention, it is also to be understood that the apparatus is capable of mechanical alteration without departing from the spirit of the invention and that such mechanical arrangement and commercial adaptation as fall within the scope of the appended claims are intended to be included herein.
Having thus fully set forth and described this invention what is claimed and desired to be obtained by United States Letters Patent is:
