UNITED STATES PATE T OFFICE.
FRANKLIN A. SMITH, JR.,-OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
BUTTON-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,169, dated May 8, 1883.
Application filed February 17, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN A. SMITH, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasteners and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and-exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in button-fasteners, and of that class which are adapted to secure buttons to fabrics or other materials without the aid of a setting-instrument as usually employed for such purpose.
My invention consists of a headed metallic pin, the upper portion of which is bent in the iorm of a loop and having the pointed end bent and extended so as to form a retaining base or table, the said pin thus constructed being adapted to pass through the fabric from the back or under side thereof, after which it will admit of the shank of a button being sprung or forced over the projecting point of said fastener into the loop portion thereof, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, (made en'- larged,) Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved fastener. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation as attached to a button and fabric. fastener.
Referring to the drawings, a represents the headed portion of the fastener, having a shank, a, and loop a the latter terminating in the extension or projection a, which latter forms a Fig. 3 represents a modified form of the retaining base or table to rest upon the upper or front surface of the fabric to which the button is to be attached. (See Fig. 2.)
In the operation of attaching a button with my improved device the point a is passed up through the fabric from the under or back surface thereof, and the fastener turned around until the loop portion a and pointed plate or table a stand upright on the upper surface of the fabric, as shown, the shank of the button is then passed over the said pointed end a and sprung in between it and the body or shank a of the fastener and into the loop a as shown.
By means of my improvements a button may be readily attached to or disconnected from a fabric or material in the quickest manner and without the aid of a setting-instrument. My improved fastener can also be produced at avery small expense. If deemed preferable, however, in place of the round head a the lower portion of the fastener may be split, so as to provide resting-prongs ainstead, as shown in Fig. 3-.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-describedbutton-fastener, consisting of the metallic pin or tack, the lower portion of which is formed with a head, a, and the upper portion, a, bent into the form of a loop, (t the point a being carried past the said loop, so as to form a table or support, substantially as shown, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
