The present invention relates in general to windows and is more particularly concerned with means for mounting window sash in an opening in a building wall.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide an improved track for mounting window sash in an opening in a building wall.
A more specific object of the present invention is to provide a sash mounting track of the aforementioned general type which is made of resilient sheet metal for facilitating holding the window sash in position in the building opening.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a sheet metal mounting strip having a longitudinal deformation substantially complementary to a protruding bead formed on the edge of the window sash for facilitating holding the window sash in position in the opening in the building wall.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a window sash mounting strip as mentioned in the preceding paragraph, which is fastened to the side of the building wall opening at only one edge of the strip, whereby the strip is manually depressible to facilitate releasing the sash from the opening in the building wall.
In connection with the preceding object of the present invention, the resilient metal strip is provided with protruding tabs adapted to be manually depressed in order to release the window sash from the mounting strips.
The above and numerous other objects and numerous advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following detailed description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view showing a double hung window mounted in an opening in a building wall;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 2-2 in Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 3-3 in Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 44 of Fig. 3 and looking in the direction of the arrows and discloses in fragmentary plan view a portion of the mounting strip shown in Fig. 3.
With reference now to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals in the difierent views identify identical parts, the present invention comprises a pair of window sash and 11 respectively mounted in an opening 12 formed in a building wall 13. The opening 12 is defined by sides 14 and 15 which respectively form the facing surfaces of a pair of wood frame members 16 and 17.
Each of the sash sections 10 and 11 may comprise a pair of sheets of glass 18 and 19, each of which is respectively sealed within a sash frame member 20 disposed around the periphery of the glass sections 18 and 19. The sash sections 10 and 11 are therefore of the type commonly known as Thermopane sash.
Suitable means are provided for mounting the sash sections 10 and 11 in the building wall opening 12 and this means will now be described. A resilient sheet metal spring strip 21 is mounted on one side of the building wall opening 12, being secured at one edge by means of a plurality of screws 22 and in the middle by means of a plurality of screws 23. At the opposite edge the metal strip is crimped as indicated at 24 to engage the facing wall 14 of the building wall opening. A pair of channels 25 opening toward the sash openings 10 and 11 respectively are provided for receiving complementary beadlike projections 26 formed on one side of each of the sash sections 10 and 11. The complementary bead-like projections 26 are seated within the channels 25 for holding the sash sections 10 and 11 against lateral displacement.
On the opposite side of the building wall opening 12, a pair of sheet metal spring strips 27 and 28 are respectively mounted by means of suitable screws 29. Each of the spring strips 27 and 28 is provided with a longitudinally extending channel 30 which is substantially identical with the channel 25 on the spring strip 21 and the channels 30 are respectively adapted to receive bead-like protuberances 26 formed on the opposite side of each of the sash sections 10 and 11. Each of the spring strips 27 and 28 is provided with a plurality of tabs 31 which are manually depressible in order to release the sash sections 10 and 11 from engagement between the bead-like protuberances and the channels formed in the spring strip.
If desired, a spacer 32 may be mounted beneath one or more of the spring strips in order to vary the spacing for the Window openings.
The present invention therefore provides a simple and eflicient mounting strip for securely mounting window sash in the opening of a building wall. It will be understood that the mounting means comprising the subject matter of the present invention is equally suitable for stationary sash as it is suitable for slidable sash customarily employed in double hung windows.
It is contemplated that changes and modifications may be made in the present invention without departing from the spirit or scope thereof.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination, window sash adapted to be mounted in an opening formed in a building wall, said sash being formed with a protruding bead on opposed sides thereof, means for mounting said sash in said opening and comprising metal spring strip devices disposed at opposed sides of said opening, each of said spring strip devices having a longitudinally extending channel substantially complementary to said bead and adapted to respectively receive one of said beads therein for slidably mounting the sash in said opening, said spring strip devices disposed on one side of said opening having the outer edge only secured to the edge of said opening and thereby being resilient for normally holding said sash in place between said devices, and projecting tabs on the free inner edge of said spring strip devices disposed on said one side of said opening and manually depressible for facilitating release of said sash from said spring strip devices and removal thereof from said opening from the inside of the building.

In combination, double hung window sash adapted to be mounted in an opening formed in a building wall, said sash being formed with a protruding bead on opposed sides thereof, means for mounting said sash in said opening including metal spring strip devices, each of said spring strip devices having a longitudinally extending channel substantially complementary to said bead and adapted to receive one of said beads therein for slidably mounting the sash in said opening; the spring strip device disposed on one side of the sash comprising a unitary member secured to the side of the opening and provided with two parallel protruding beads one cooperating Patented ov. 13, 1956 with the upper sash and the other with the lower sash; References Cited in the file of this patent the spring strip devices for the other side of the sash UNI:TED STATES PATENTS comprising two strips, one for each sash; each of said strips having only the edge to. the outside of the building 2,2753?
