Description

n. KUNKEL, 15.. GAR COUPLING.
(No Model.) v
, [Patented May 1,1883. fl nK UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL KUNKEL, sa, OF OREGON, MIssoURI.
CAR-QOUPL-ING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of- Letters Patent No. 276,977, dated May 1, 1883. Applicationfiled August31,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, DANIEL KUNKEL,ISI., of Oregon, in the county of Holt and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Oar-Coupling, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention, which is an improvement on the car-coupling for which Letters Patent No. 234,990 were issued to me on November 30,
.1880, consists in a draw-head provided with an inclined Way.,-up which the coupling-hook slides to catch on a cross-bar at the upper end of the same, and with a stirrup for raising the hook to uncouple thecars.
The invention also consists in a shaft provided with an -arm, on whichthe stirrup is hung, which shaft is provided with an addi tional arm, which rests against a cam-arm on a shaftjournaledon the end of the car, which shaft is provided with hand-wheels, a' curved arm, or other suitable devices for turning it, wherebythe stirrup willbe raised.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in
which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the'figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved coupling, showing it attached to a car.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same. I A I Adraw-head, A, of the usual construction,
. which couples by means of a link and a pin,
B, is provided on one side with an upwardlyinclined way, G, at the upper end of which there is a horizontal transverse rod, D, at right angles to the'longitudinal axis of the draw head. The sides a are extendedabove the inclined way, to prevent thepivoted couplinghook from slidingofl' theinclined way. A horizontal transverse shaft, E, provided at the ends, which project beyond the sides of the car, with hand-wheels F, is journaled in the draw head frame adjoining the end of the car. A shaft, G, is journaled in the frame edrigidly on one end of the shaft G. A crankarm, L, provided at its outer end with a cam projection, Z, is rigidly mounted on the shaft connected with a transverse crank-shaft on the To that side of the draw-head end of the car. opposite the one provided with the inclined way a coupling-hook, P, is pivoted, the swinging end of which is beveled. A stop, Q, is
provided, upon which the cross-piece J ofthe stirrup J can rest, to prevent it from descend ing too far.
The operation is as follows: If the cars come together, the hooks B slide up the inclined ways 0 of the opposite draw-heads and catch on the rodsD, whereby the cars will be coupled automatically. If the cars are to be uncoupled, the shaft E is turned either by turning hand wheels F or by swinging the arm M upward, which is accomplished by pulling the rod 0 upward. Thereby the arm L will be swung-upward toward the car, and will press against the arm K and swing the same upward from the car. will be swung upward toward the car and will raise the stirrup J, which raises the free end of the hook and disengages it'from the rod D, so that it can'be drawn from theinclined way.
Thereby the free end of the arm H I If the cars are to be prevented from coupling, 7
the stirrup must be held raised.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the draw-head A, pivoted hook P, and inclined way 0, of the shaft G, journaled in the" side of the way, the stirrup J ,provided with a beveled bottom crosspiece, J, and means for operating the stirrup, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the draw-head A,
pivoted hook P, inclined way 0, the shaft G,
and the stirrup J, of the shaft G, the arms H K, shaft E, having an arm, L, and hand-wheels F, substantially as shown and described.
