W- H. ROBERTS.
BUTTER PACKAGE.
7 W i WITNESSES ENTOR.
INV fig! I I I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H; ROBERTS,OF DAVENPORT CENTRE, N EW YORK.
BUTTER-PACKAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,882, dated May 1, 1883.
Application filed March 22, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM HrRonnacrsf part of this specification, and in which tion and combination of parts of a package- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my im provedbutter'package. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same with the outer casing opened, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the lid-fastening for the butter-jar.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to butter-packages; and itconsists in theimproved construcconsisting of a hermeticallyclosed glass jar inclosed in a casing having elastic cushions preventing breaking of the jar, as hereinafter more fully described and-claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a cylindrical glass jar having a lid, B, fastened air-tight on the top of the same by means ot'a clamping-yoke, G. This jar is inclosed in a casing, D, preferably rectangular, of a height and width slightly exceeding the height and width of the jar, and havinga hinged lid, E, at its top. The sides of this casing are provided upon the inside with recesses F, near thetop, at l the points nearest to the sides of the jar, in which recesses are I fastened segment-shaped cushions G, of rubber or other elastic material, bearing against the sides of the jar, and recesses H are cut into thesides andbottom below the recesses F, and L-shapedor angular cushions I, of rubber or other elastic material, are fastened in the same, serving to hold the lower end of the jar firmly in place, preventing it from breaking during transportation.
The top of thejar is provided with a flange, J, upon which rests a gasket, K, upon the upper surface of which the downward-turned flange L of the lid bears, pressed down by the clamping yoke. This yoke consists of a straight portion, M, extending diametrically across the lid, and having its ends N bent downward against the sides of the lidflange and flange J, under which latter the ends are bent inward, catching under the same.
An eccentric disk, 0, having a handle, P, extending from its rim, is pivoted upon the center of the straight portion of the yoke in such a manner than when the handle P is raised the eccentric edge of the disk will be be kept inaccessible to the air, and the jar, be-
ing placed in the rubber-cushioned casing, may be transported and handled safely without danger of breaking it.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1 The combination of the casing D, having lid E, and recesses F in theinside of its sides, having elastic cushions G, and L-shaped recesses H in the sides and bottom, having L- shaped cushions I,'with the cylindrical glass jar, as and for the purpose shown and set forth. i
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. ROBERTS.
