- GLOVE-FINISHING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,768, dated May 1, 1883.
Application filed July 11,1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEX. U. (JALDERwooD, of Johnstown, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Glove-FinishingApparatus,ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description. My invention consists of improvements in the construction and arrangement of the steam hand-board, thumb-stick," and table employed for steam-heating the thumbs and fingers of gloves in the finishing process, all as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of a table with two hand-boards and one thumb-stick and the steam-pipe connections as I propose to arrange them. Fig. 2 is a detail of the device for regulating the steam in section. Fig. 3-is a detail of a packing-joint of the steamdistributing pipe in section. Fig. 4. is a sectional elevation of the steam hand-board and the pipe-connections. Fig. 5 is an elevation of one of the inclosing or covering plates of the handboard, and Fig. 6 is an elevation of a thumb-stick of modified form.
I propose to make the hand-board, which consists of four hollow fingers, c, and a hollow section, b, into which steam is admitted for heating the fingers, by casting said fingers in one section, to be joined onto the end of b at c by solder or otherwise, making the fingers solid, and boring the steam-chambers in them. I also propose to cast the section bwith open sides from a point a little below joint 0 to a point a little above the wrench-collar d, from which point to the lower end I core out the center 6, then bore the branch holesfat'the top to connect with the chambers of the fin gers, and inclose the open sides at g with covers h, screwing or riveting them on, thus making the board in a simpler way than as heretofore constructed of thin plates and strips by soldering the parts together, besides being much neater. Below collar (1, I make a. gaspipe thread for connection with a gas-coupling, i, to connect the board with a nipple, j, which is to project through the top of the table k from the under side, where it screws into the outlet 1, which is to be drawn up tightly against the under side of the table by a checknut, m, screwing on the nipple above the table, and thus supporting the boardin the vertical position on the table, as desired. As many of these hand-boards and thumb-sticks n as desired are arranged in a row along one side of the table-generally two of each-the whole being connected by the pipe 0 along under the table, said pipe inclosing a steampipe,p, entering through a bushing, g, at one end, and connecting at each hand-board and thumb-stick with a branch, 25, for conducting the steam up therein to heat them, after which the steam escapes through connectionsj and f. In the hand-boards the branches t are subdivided into a branch, a, for each finger. When the hand-boards and thumb-sticks are coupled to the gas-nipples above the table, the branches t are also coupled by check-nuts c and w and packing 0c, the nut w being conical, so that said not will readily enter the upper section of branch t, made larger than the lower part for that purpose, at the same time that section 1) screws into coupling 6. The
packing to is so adjusted as to be tightly compressed when upper section, It, is drawn down over it by screw-coupling 'i. The branch t will be made of small thin copper or brass tubing, the branches at of the upper section, t, being soldered on in any approved Way.
The thumb-sticks consist of a single hollow device, a, with a closed upper end, either cored out in the casting or bored afterward for the steam-branch t, and being in any desired form,
as in Fig. 1 or 6, or other-form. The connection with the table k and the pipes 0 and 12 will be substantially the same as the handboards are connected. The steam-pipe 12 will have a waste-cock, I, for drawing off the water of condensation, and the exh'austpipe f is provided with a relief-valve, a, set on a spring, b, to be opened automatically by the steam for its escape at any predetermined pressure, and said spring is located on a vertically-adjustable seat, 0, with a fasteningscrew, d, to secure it in the desired position, according to the desired pressure of the exhaust. The exhaust-valve a is to be located atthe end of pipe 0 where the steam-pipe enters, and said end is to be arranged lowest for the free escape of the water. It will be seen that the method of construction which I propose is simple, and the apparatus is neat and substantial.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The improved steam hand-board consisting of cast and bored finger-section a, and
- chambered and bored cast-metal section b,
with tubular stem 0 and covers It, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in asteam hand-board, of sections a 11, coupled to pipe j, and steampipe 1., with branches u, inclosed in said sections at b, and having couplings '0 w an, arranged to connect and disconnect together with the connection and disconnection of the said hand-board with pipe 3', substantially as described. 7
