SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,869, dated February 9, 1897. Application filed December 7, 1896. Serial No. 614,727. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM M. LYNN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Radiators, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
In steam-radiators it is desirable to be able to to use all or a portion of the tubes or loops,
as desired, in order to vary the extent of radiating-surface heated by the steam. Several means of accomplishing this object have been proposed. One means suggested is to have a special steam-inlet valve capable of directing the steam to one or other of diiferent compartments into which the radiator may be divided.
My invention provides a valve independent of the steam-controlling valves, this valve being a three-way valve, preferably located at the lowest part of the radiator and connected with the steam-outlet pipe by means of an additional pipe, constituting a drip- 2 5 pipe for the escape of the water of condensation.
In the drawings, Figure 1, in side elevation, shows a usual radiator provided with my invention, parts being broken away and 0 shown in vertical section to exhibit the operative relations thereof. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the threeway-valve plug.
The radiator A, comprising a plurality of pipes or loops a, cap a, base a, steam-inlet pipe B, its controlling-valve Z), steam-outlet pipe 0, and its controlling-valve 0, may be and are of usual construction. The base a 0 is hollow, having free communication with the pipes a, as shown in the broken-away portion of Fig. 1, and is provided with a partition a herein shown as midway of the length of the hollow base, thereby separating the radiator into two equal compartments, my invention, however, not being restricted to two compartments. The bottom of the base is depressed at a a three=way valve D being mounted horizontally in the partition and resting in this depression. The latter is provided with an interiorly-threaded nipple a adapted to register with the valve-passages and connected to the outlet-pipe O by apipe E, tapped into the nipple.
The pipe E is not onlya steam connection, but is also a drip-pipe for the automatic escape of the condensed steam, as the latter drips down the tubes aand collects in the chambers of the base a The operation of my invention is as follows: When the steam is first turned on, by opening the valve 1) the valve D is turned into the opposite position to that shown in Fig. 1,
so as to permit any accumulated water to escape from the radiator down the pipe E. Then if it be cold weather and the heat of the Whole radiator is required the valve 0 is opened, and after the drip has all escaped down the pipe E the valve D is turned into the position shown in Fig. 1, thereby main 7o taining the steam in its most direct access to the whole radiator. If now the weather moderates or if for any reason less heat is required, the valve D is given a quarter-turn in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1,,thereby cutting 01f the steam from the right-hand half of the radiator and opening a free passage therefor through the valve D and pipe E to the outlet 0, the valve 0 of the latter being closed.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A steam-radiator, having steam inlet and outlet pipes, valves therefor, radiating pipes or loops, and a base communicating therewith, combined with a partition in said base separating said radiator into compartments,
a three-way valve in said partition, and a pipe connecting said valve with said steam- 9o outlet pipe, said valve being adapted to open free communication as desired between the compartments of the radiator and said connecting-pipe, substantially as described.
