SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,439, elated November 8, 1881.
Application filed July 30, 1881. (No model) To all whom 'it may concer-n Be it known that I, LOUIS WOLF, of San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented a new and uselul Improvement in Pressing and Drying Garments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyi n gdrawings, forming part ot this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, one-half in section, of my invention as adapted for pressing and drying pantaloons. Fig 2 is a perspective view, one-half in section, ot' my invention as adapted for pressing and drying coats. Fig. 3 is a perspective view ot' a collar-term to be used with Fig. 2.
My invention :relates to improvements in pressing and drying garments 5 and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
ln the accom panyin g drawin gsl have shown my method of drying and pressing garments as applied to pantaloons and a coat, which method also can be applied to any other garment. v
a represents a hollow form, made of sheet metal ot' the conguration of a pair of pantaloons. The hollow form is closed steam-tight at its top by the head b, and is similarly closed at the lower ends of the legs by the steam-tight heads c, one for each leg.
represents a bifureated steam-pi pe pierced with holes on its opposite sides. lhe upper 4end of the steam-pipe el passes steam-tight through an orifice in the head b, and is connected with a steam-supply pipe. The steampipe el extends downward nearly to the crotch ot' the form, where it is bifurcated, each bifurcated part of the steam-pipe passing down a leg and secured to the upper faces of the heads c at the lower end of the legs.
e represents an escape-pipefor the steam in the upper head, b, ofthe form, and g g represent holes in the heads c o at the lower ends of the legs for the escape ofthe water of condensation. v
h h represent semi-cylindrical half-forms, embracing the outer sides ot' the hollow form a, and extending from the top to the bottom ot' the inner form and adjustable thereon for pantaloons of different sizes. Theupper and lower ends of the halt-forms h are provided with projections z' t at their ends, each having a screwthreaded orifice, through which pass at the upper and lower ends ot' the half-forms right and left screws 7c la, whereby, by drawing on the form a larger pair of pantaloons than the form the semi-cylindrical half-sides or halfforms can be-extended at top and bottom by the right and left screws, so as to fit and stretch the pantaloons. By this construction it is obvious that the form a, with its ad jnstable half forms or sides h 7i, is adapted to receive pantaloons of varying` sizes drawn over them, the steam heating the sheet-metal 'form and halt'- forms, drying the pantaloons, and in the process of drying the pantaloons are contracted, the hot metallic surface of the forms acting to press .the pantaloons during the process of drying them.
The coat form is made ot' two distinct and independent halves, l l, each having an inner side plate, m, the latter abutting against each other when the half-forms are closed. The half-forms Z are made steam-tight, and are closed at their upper ends by the steam-tight heads a n, and at their lower ends by the steamtight heads o 0. The half-forms l l are also provided with projections p p at their upper ends, having screw-threaded holes q q for the passage of a right-and-left screw, whereby the half-forms Z l can be opened at their upper ends like the letter V, the lower ends of the halff'orm remaining closed or opening but slightly. The front and back portions of one ol the halt'- forms l along the central portion of the coatform overlaps the other halt'- form, so as to cover the V-space when the half-forms are opened at the top.
r represents a supply-pipe for the steam,
which is introduced into the half-forms at their bottom by means of the pipes s s, branching from the supply-pipe and entering the lower heads of the halt-forms at their lower ends. The pipes s s are pierced with holes lying opposite each other for introducing steam into the half-forms, and the escape-pipe t is at the top ot each form. By this construction the half-forms will be adapted to dry and press roo Coats of different sizes, the lower part ofthe coat-form being larger than the upper part, and the bifureated end ofthe supply-pipe holdin g the half-forms in position and acting somewhat as a hinge. The arm-forms are to be separate and detachable from the forms, and several sizes of arm-forms for coats of different sizes are employed. The arm-holes on the halt-forms are each closed about one inch from the end, so that the arms may be placed therein. The arm-forms are steam-tight, and have an exten,-v
. sion about one inch from the shoulder, which will t close inside the arm-holes of the form. The arm-forms are to hang downward, and
separate supply-pipes v, pierced with opposite f holes, are placed in the bottom of the armforins. Escape-pipes w are also placed in the bottom ot the arm-forms. v
m represents the form for the collar ot' a coat, made ot' sheet metal, but not fastened to the coat-form or forming a part ot it. The collarform x is placed under the coat-collar after the latter has been placed on the form, so that the heat from the latter will have the desired etvwoihollow half-forms and means, substantially as described, for adj listing said half-forms on the form and heating them, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth. vvvv 2. The combination, with the hollow pantaloons-f'orin ci, provided with the heads b o c, of
the half-forms h h, right and left screws 7s lc,`
and bifureated steam-pipe d, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
