B. HOLDEN 276,586. Patented May 1,18 83.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EZRA HOLDEN, OFOHIGAGO, ILLINOIS.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letterslatent N0.'276,586, dated May 1, 1883.
Application filed October 21, 1882. tModcl.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA HOLDEN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain novel device to be applied to the pictures of faces or busts of toys having faces, by which the eyes may be represented as winking or the tongue thrust from the mouth, as an amusement for children at Christmas time,by representing Santa Claus as winking, or thrusting his tongue out of his mouth, and being apparently alive, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 represents a front view otla pasteboard picturehaving holes 0 0 cut in it where the eyes should be and a slot for the mouth. Fig. 2 represents a back view of the same, but having connected with it a back piece, (marked a-,) and held in place by strips(marked b b) underneath which its upper and lower ends pass, said strips "b I) being attached at their ends to the rear of the pasteboard picture Fig. 3 represents a front view similar to Fig. 1, but
having the eyes in their proper position.
On the front of the back piece, a, are painted or drawn eyes, which, when in place, fill the There may also be attached to the front of the back'piece, a, in proper place a strip of paper or other material painted red, in shape of and to represent a tongue, to be thrust through the slot for the month, as hereinafter described. There is also attached to this back piece, a, and also to the upper strip b, anelastic or spring, 0, and there are projections to the back piece, a, confining it in its movements between the strips 1) b, so that when the elastic or spring is not drawn the Attached to the bot- "tom of the back piece, a, is a string, on pulling which downward until the lower projections reach the lower strip .b the painted eyes are 1 ,jdrawn down out of sight, appearing as if yclosed by winking, and by the same movement, the strip d in Fig. 4, representing the tongue, is thrust forward through the slot for the lips or month. On loosening the string the back piece, a, is drawn up by the elastic or spring until stopped by the upper projection reaching the upper strip 1), at which. point 'Fig. 5 represents two back pieces, a a, upon one of which a strip to represent a tongue is attached. With this arrangement a string would be attached to each piece a a, so that by pulling one or both strings either one or both eyes may be represented as winking, and the tongue may be operated or not, as desired.
NVith this picture thus prepared and .attached to the wall of a room, or among the branches of a Christmas-tree, and the string attached to the lower end of the back piece, a, passing down behind a table or chair, the string may be carried along the floor or wall to a distant part of the room, and aperson addressing the picture or asking questions of it responses would seem to be given by causing it to seem to wink or thrust its tongue out by the pulling of one or two strings.
What Iclaim as my invention, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, isy 1. The combination of the back piece, a, with the card-board B, and strips 1) b, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the elastic 0, attached to the back piece, a, with the cardboard B or with upper strip, b, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
EZRA HOLDEN.
