Claims. (ill. 224-26) This invention generally relates to a wallet carrier and more specifically relates to a device for attachment to the belt or suspenders of a person carrying the wallet so that the wallet may be positioned outside the trousers for eliminating the bulk in the trouser pockets and to guard against loss or theft of the wallet.

An object of the present invention is to provide a wallet carrier including a clip for attachment to a belt together with means for securely locking the clip to the belt when the wallet is in the carrier due to a portion of the lock means projecting into the receptacle for engagement by the wallet and eliminating the crushing and bending of the wallet and contents.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a wallet carrier constructed of sheet material that may be adjusted for wallets of various thicknesses due to its particular construction and which forms substantially a theft proof wallet carrier.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a wallet carrier in accordance with the preceding objects which also includes in its construction a clip for carrying a combination comb and nail file.

Further objects of the present invention will reside in the simplicity of construction, ease of attachment, safety, comfort for the person carrying the wallet, its adaptation for its particular purpose and its relatively inexpensive manufacturing cost.

These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is a rear elevational view of the wallet carrier of the present invention;

Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the construction of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is a plan view of the blank of material from which the wallet carrier of the present invention may be formed;

Figure 4 is a side elevational view of Figure 3;

Figure 5 is a sectional view taken substantially upon the plane passing along section line 55 of Figure l illustrating the construction and relationship of the slidable locking member;

Figure 6 is a perspective view of the locking member per se; and

Figure 7 is a side elevational view illustrating the combination comb and nail file utilized in the Wallet carrier of the present invention.

Referring now specifically to the drawings, it will be seen that the numeral 16 generally designates the wallet carrier of the present invention which includes a receptacle generally designated by the numeral 12 and having a front wall 14 and a rear wall 16 together with inturned side edges 13 on the front wall and flanges 20 on the rear Wall 1'6 wherein the flanges 25 are inturned and underlie the flanges 18 for forming substantially a continuous upatent G 2,765,110 Fatented Oct. 2, 1956 wardly opening receptacle of rectangular configuration generally conforming to the shape and size of a wallet. The upper end of the front wall 14 is rearwardly curved as designated by the numeral 22 for holding a wallet within the open upper end of the carrier 10. The bottom of the front wall 14 and rear wall 16 is connected by a curved portion 24 and an elongated slot 26 is provided in a portion of the front wall 14 and a portion of the curved portion 24 wherein a persons finger may be inserted in the slot 26 and moved upwardly therein for moving the wallet (not shown) outwardly through the open upper end of the receptacle 10 thereby facilitating removal of the wallet past the inwardly curved upper end 22 of the front Wall 14.

The upper end of the rear wall 24 is provided with a projecting tab 28 bent into substantially a U-shaped configuration and in spaced relation thereto another tab 30 is struck out from the rear wall 16 and curved in facing relation to the U-shaped tab 28 thereby forming a channelway for removably receiving a comb 32 therein. The comb 32 is provided with a slot 34 for receiving a nail file 36 that is pivoted on a pivot pin 38 on one end of the slot 34. inwardly extending indentations 49 are provided in the upper edge of the comb 32 to permit gripping of the nail file 36 to pivot the nail file 36 about pivot pin 33 to a position outwardly of the slot 34 for use thereof. The particular resiliency of the U-shaped tabs 28 and 39 and the particular configuration of the comb 32 permit the comb 32 to be frictionally retained between the tabs 28 and 30.

Adjacent the upper end of each of the flanges 18 on the front wall 14 is an elongated closed slot 42. Adjacent the upper end of the flanges 25 on the rear wall 16 is a horizontal slot 44 having vertical slots 46 and 48 extending downwardly therefrom. Each of the slots 46 and 48 are provided an offset lower end portion as designated by the numeral 59 and the slot 48 is at the edge of the flange 20 adjacent the rear wall 16 and the slot 46 is substantially one-half the length of slot 48 and is substantially at the midpoint 44 for a purpose described hereinafter.

Extending through the slot 42 and the slot 44 is a double headed rivet 52 or some similar fastening device for sliding movement in the slots 42 and 44. When the flanges 13 and 20 are in overlapping position as illustrated in Figure 5, the distance between the upper ends of the front wall 14 and rear wall 16 may be adjusted by positioning the pin 52 in either of the vertical slots 48 or 46 or in the horizontal slot 44. This will permit the rear wall members 14 and 16 to be positioned in parallel or upwardly diverging relation for permitting insertion of various sizes of wallets.

For supporting the wallet carrier on a belt, a clip member 54 is struck out from and disposed rearwardly and in spaced parallel relation to the rear wall 16 and is connected thereto by a portion 56. The clip 54 is generally rectangular in configuration and is provided with an inturned hook-shaped lower end 60. Due to inherent resiliency of the clip member 54, the inturned hookshaped end portion 60 forms generally a cam surface for riding over a belt whereby the carrier 10 may be positioned on the belt without removing the belt from the article of clothing with which it is associated.

For securing the wallet carrier 10 on a belt with the clip 54 positioned thereover and to prevent loss thereof, a slidable locking plate 62 is provided. The locking plate 62 is provided with a right angular extension 64 at one end thereof together with a pair of recesses 66 at the junction between the main portion of the plate 62 and the right angular portion 64 thereof. The right angular portion 64 is disposed within the interior of the receptacle 12 and the recesses 66 slidably engage the upper and lower edges of a slot 68 in the rear wall 16. The slot 68 permits horizontal sliding movement of the plate 62 within the limits of the slot 68. This movement will move the right angular extension 64'horizontally inwardly from a position against the'inwardly extending flange 20 on the rear wall 16; 'Afastening rivet 70 is extended through a second horizontal slot 72 and is attached to the tapered end 74 of the plate 62 thereby further guiding and limiting the sliding movement of the plate 62. The upper edge of the plate 62 is provided with an upwardly extending tab 76 which terminates in a downwardly extending hook member 78 which faces outwardly and engages over and with the hook-shaped end portion 60 on the clip 54. This engagement forms a closure for the clip 54 and securely locks the lower end of the clip 54 to the rear wall 16 of the receptacle 12 thereby preventing dislodgement of the wallet carrier 19 from a belt. As long as a wallet is disposed within the receptacle 12, the plate 62 cannot move to an unlocked position since the inward extension 64 is positioned interiorly of the receptacle 12 and would engage the wallet positioned therein. Therefore, it will be seen that as long as the wallet is positioned within the receptacle 12, the lock plate 62 cannot move and must remain in locked relation to the clip 54 thereby preventing accidental disengagement of the wallet from the belt. Therefore, it will be seen that the present invention provides a Wallet carrier which is safe since it will prevent accidental loss, comfortable since it will permit the wallet to be carried on the outer portion of the trousers and eliminating bulkiness such as occurs when it is carried in the trouser pockets, theftproof since it is normally carried on the forward area of the body in readily observable position and since the upper end thereof may be adjusted to partially closed position and the upper end of the forward wall is curved inwardly and efi'ieient in use since the wallet may be removed therefrom by the person using the wallet carrier inserting his finger into the slot 26 and moving the wallet upwardly through the open end of the receptacle 12.

The wallet carrier 10 of the present invention may be constructed of any suitable material such as sheet metal, plastic or the like which would render the device relatively inexpensive to manufacture and pleasing in appearance. The wallet carrier 10 also substantially eliminates the usual crushing and bending of the wallet and its contents when it is carried in a trouser pocket. Also, the clip 54 is of sufl'icient length to permit the carrier to automatically adjust itself on the belt as the wearer sits down or rises.

The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

1. A wallet carrier for attachment to a belt comprising a receptacle for receiving a wallet, a clip on the rear surface of said receptacle for engagement with a belt, and means for releasably locking said clip to the belt, said means including a movable member for closing the entrance to said clip. 7

2. A wallet carrier for attachment to a belt comprising a vertically disposed receptacle for receiving a wallet, a clip on the rear surface of said receptacle for positioning over a belt, and means for releasably locking said clip to the belt, said means including a slidable member forming a closure for said clip, said slidable member including a portion projecting into the interior of said receptacle for engagement by a wallet whereby the slidable member will be retained in clip closing position until the wallet is removed from the receptacle.

3. A wallet carrier for attachment to a belt comprising a vertically disposed receptacle for receiving a wallet, a clip on the rear surface of said receptacle for positioning over a belt, and means for releasably locking said clip to the belt, and means at the 'upper end of the receptacle to adjust the size thereof for adapting the receptacle to receive various sizes of wallets.

4. A wallet carrier for attachment to a belt comprising a vertically disposed receptacle for receiving a wallet, a clip on the rear surface of said receptacle for positioning over a belt, and means for releasably locking said clip to the belt, said means including a slidable member forming a closure for said clip, said slidable member including a portion projecting into the interior of said receptacle for engagement by a wallet whereby the slidable member will be retained in clip closingposition until the wallet is removed from the receptacle, said receptacle having a vertically extending groove forming a finger passage for urging the wallet upwardly out of the receptacle.

5. A wallet carrier for attachment to a belt comprising a vertically disposed receptacle for receiving a wallet, a clip on the rear surface of said receptacle for positioning over a belt, and means for releasably locking said clip to the belt, said means including a slidable member forming a closure for said clip, said slidable member including a portion projecting into the interior of said receptacle for engagement by a wallet whereby the slidable member will; be retained in clip closing position until the wallet is removed from the receptacle, said receptacle having a vertically extending groove forming a finger passage for urging the wallet upwardly out of the receptacle, and

' means at the upper end of the receptacle to adjust the size thereof foradapting the receptacle to receive various sizes of Wallets. 7 j
