CHILD'S CHAIR FOR AUTOMOBILE Filed Aug. 6, 1952 INVENTOR [lennis Berlln.
ZATI'ORN E;
United States Patent CIHLDS CHAIR FOR AUTOMOBILE Dennis Berlin, Philadelphia, Pa.
Application August 6, 1952, Serial No. 302,906
1 Claim. (Cl. 155-11) My invention relates to a childs chair for use in an automobile.
Heretofore, childrens chairs for automobiles have been made but no provision has been made for adjusting the angle of tilt for the chair as the baby grows older.
It is, therefore, an object of my invention to provide a childs chair for automobiles whereby the seat may be adjusted for the leg position of the child.
Another object of my invention is to provide a childs chair for automobiles in which the childs chair is firmly secured in position on the top of the backrest as well as between the seat and the backrest.
Another object of my invention is to provide a childs chair attachment whereby the chair may be collapsed.
Other objects of my invention are to provide an improved device of the character described, that is easily and economically produced, which is sturdy in construction, and which is highly efficient in operation.
With the above and related objects in view, my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of parts, as will be more fully understood from the following description, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a front view of a childs chair for automobiles embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of Fig. 1 as taken along the lines 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top view of the chair.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the hinge connection for the support.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken along the line 5-5.
of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a view taken along the line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
Referring now in greater detail to my invention wherein similar reference characters refer to similar parts, I show a seat which is adapted to be placed upon the top of the backrest of an automobile wherein the weight of the child will prevent the holding hooks from being jostled loose. The hooks A1, A2 may be encased in plastic or a suitable nonmarring member and the hooks are part of the frame 10, 12 and 14 which is bent at the center 12 to form a connecting link between the two side members and 14. The ends of the side members are bent into a hook shape. Pivotally connected to the side arms 10 and 14 is a U-shaped seat supporting frame, generally designated as B, whose arm 16 is connected with the leg 10 of member A and whose leg 20 is connected to the leg 14. The center portion 18 joining legs 16 and 20 serves as a rest for the stomach of the child. A seat, generally designated as S, is suitably attached to the supporting frame member B. In order to keep the seat supported in an upright position, I have two side supports, one being generally designated as C and the other as D, pivoted together at 22. The other end of the member C is pivoted at 24 to the leg 16 of the frame member B adjacent the connecting bight 18. The other end of the side support member D has a bolt and wing nut thereon by virtue of which the side support D is held at 24 to the side frame A1. An offset 26 serves to limit the backward or downward swing of the lower arm C. A second opening 28 in the side arm serves to provide an adjustable arrangement whereby the side support D and the side support member C may be lowered in order to lower the forward portion of the seat in order to take care of very small children. As the child grows, the seat can be elevated by moving it from the opening 28 to the upper opening as shown in Fig. 2.
It is to be noted that the construction of the seat enables it to be collapsed. Furthermore, the hooks of Al and A2 clamp upon the top of the backrest whereas the joining portion 12 rests between the backrest and the back of the seat.
Although my invention has been described in considerable detail, such description is intended as being illustrative rather than limiting, since the invention may be variously embodied, and the scope of the invention is to be determined as claimed.
I claim as my invention:
A foldable childs chair for an automobile comprising a vertically extending U-shaped base frame having vertical legs, a hook at each front end of said frame and being adapted to overlie the backrest of an automobile, a second U-shaped member having its ends pivotally connected to an intermediate portion of said vertically extending U- shaped frame, a seat suspended upon said second U- shaped member, a pair of side supports pivotally connected together, the free end of one support being pivotally connected to said second U-shaped member and the other of said side supports being pivotally connected to the vertical leg of said base frame, and one of said side supports having a projection thereon which is adapted to engage said vertically extending leg of said base frame to limit the backward or downward swing of the said supports, and the said second U-shaped member being adapted to be folded against said first mentioned base frame.
