UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. EIAVARD, OF POLO, ILLINOIS.
PORTABLE-ENGINE FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,374, dated .April 24, 1883.'
Application filed October 20, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN H. ELWARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Polo, in the county of Ogle and Stateot' Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable-Engine Furnaces, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing there is shown a longitudi-V nal section of a portable engine and furnace embodying my improvements.
C represents the fire-fine, the rear part, D', of which is utilized as the furnace.
D2 is the hearth-plate, provided with hooks (12 at the inner edge for supporting the gratebars d, which at their rear ends are supported in seats d2, formed on the bridge-wall D?. At the front end ot' the furnace there is a door adapted for the admission of either coal or light fuel, it consisting of. an outer part, F2, an inner part, F, and a lower portion, F. The part F is hinged to the part F2, and provided with a weight, X, which tends to return it to an upright position.
C is the rear sinoke-chamber, and `C2 the front chamber, the rear chamber being formed between the rear end wall, a., and the partition eat the rear end of the water-space, and the front chamber, C2, being formed between the front partition, c', for the water-space and the front end walls, B B.
The tire -ue entends from the rear outer wall, a, to the front partition, c'. Below the hearth-plate D2 there is an aperture, E', extending from the furnace through the outer shell. Farther in from the rear end, and inside of the rear end of the water-space, there is another aperture, E2, the sheet by which it is surrounded being inelosed by water, as shown at a2. Below these apertures there is an ash-pan, E, having inclined swinging doors e2 at the ends and supplemental sliding doors E4 at the sides.
Upon the platform there is supported a receptacle, E", to receive cinders orother material, which maypass out through thelower door, F', said receptacle having a sloping mouth, as at e2. At the front end there is a water-jacket con structed of an under plate, G2, an inner plate, G, an upper plate, G', and an outer plate, B.
In the bottom of the front smoke-chamber, G2, there is an aperture for the escape of ashes, cinders, &c., which aperture is closed by a door, P. Said materials pass into a receptacle at P, which is pivotally supported upon the axle ofthe front wheels.
e is a sliding door, by means of which the inner aperture, E2, is closed. Preferably this door is moved by means of a rod extending through the rear end ot' the furnace, though other means may be used.
Under some circumstances it is very desir; able to have a copiousadniission ot' air into a furnace ot' the character described directly below the grate-bars, and with air-passages arranged in the manner shown this can be readily effected. When the doors e2 for the withdrawal ot' ashes are closed, air can be admitted to the passage E2 through the sliding doors E4, and the amount thereof can be readily regulated.
I do not in this application claim anything but what is specificallyT set forth in the following claims, reserving to myself the right to claim all other patentable matters in another application heretofore tiled of which this is a division.
What I claim is- 1. In a portableengine, the combination of the furnace-chamber, a substantially horizontal grate therein, a door in the front end below said grate, an ash-pan below and independent of the furnace-chamber, the ash-exit E', communicating with said ash-pau, a snpplemental aperture communicating with said ash-pan and the furnacechamber, a door for opening and closing said supplemental airpassage, and means extending tothe outside of the furnace for operating said door, substantially as set forth.
2. `In a portable engine, the combination of the following elements, namely: an outer cylindrical boiler-shell, an inner re-ue shell, the water-space formed by said shells and by the transverse partitions e c', the smokechamber C at the rear end around the reue shell outside of the Water-space, the ash-pan In testimony whereof I affix my signature in outside of und independent of the furnacepresence of two witnesses.. chamber, the opening E below the smoke- A chamber and outside of the water-space, the JOHN H. ELWARD. opening E2 inside of the Water-space and surrounded by the Water, and the horizontal grate Witnesses:
situated above said opening E2, substantially H. H. BLISS,
as set forth. l M. ROALLAN.
