UNITED STATES PATENT 'OFFICE.
ROBERT Banner PATERSON, ASSIGNOR T0 ADOLF MARTIN, or PASSAIU,
NEW JERSEY. I
SHELL FOR USE IN DYE-VATS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 'No. 276,340, dated April 24, 1883.
Application filed December 1, l88 1. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Dyers and Bleachers Shells, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to wooden shells, and especially solid shells, for use in the baths and between the baths and the printing-machines to roll or wind the web upon, and for other uses in the process of bleaching and dyeing. These shells, being subjected to the action of water and materials for bleachin g and dyeing, are liable to warp and to split after short use; and to overcome this disadvantage is the object of my invention, which consists in a solid wooden shell having a central polygonal bore, for the reception of a core-rod, and having its opposite ends provided with annular recesses surrounding the bore, into which are sunken metallic re enforcin g rings.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a longitudinal central section. Fig. 2 is an end view.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letterA designates the body of the solid wooden shell; B, its polygonal bore; 0, the annular recesses, and D the metallic rings What is meant by a solid shell is one made of a single piece of wood, instead of being made in sections.
The bore B is'located in the center of the shell, serving to receive the core, whereby the shell is suspended at the desired place, and in this example such bore is square, while the shell is cylindrical or roller-shaped; but these features may be varied in known ways.
The recesses G are formed in the opposite ends of the shell, to surround the bore B, the
diameter of the recesses correspondin g. to that of the rings and the depth thereof being equal to the width of the rings, while the width of the recesses is equal to the thicknessof the rings.
The rings D are composed of steel or other metal, and are sunken into the recesses Q in a 1 suitable manner, beingheld in place by frictional contact.
It will be readily perceived that by the metallic ringsD the wooden shell is strengthened or re-enforced to a material extent and the danger of its splitting is reduced to a minimum. I am aware that tool-handles havebeen provided with sunken ferrules at one end, surrounding the tool-socket, and I do not claim such as my invention; and I am also aware that bobbins have been provided with a seamless reenforcing or strengthening band or ring composed of glue which is treated and com bined with glycerine and a suitable thickening-powder and properly hardened; butsuch I do not claim, as aring or band made ot'such or similar compositions could not be employed by dyers and bleachers, for the action of the liquid usedajn the art of dyeing and bleaching would soon destroy the efficiency ot' a compofor the purpose designed by my invention.
The peculiarity of my invention consists in forming a square or pol ygonal-shaped opening in both ends of a roll employed in the baths and between the baths and priinting-ma- 5 chines in the art of dyeing and bleaching, said openings serving as seats or bearings to receive the shaft or shafts for supporting and rotating the roll without the use of keys, wedges, or similar means. The openings being of polygonalshape and the connection of the roll with the shaft or shafts a loose or free one, it is evident that the walls and angular portions of the seats or bearings are subjected to considerable strain as the roll rotates in its bath during the operation of winding and un winding the dyed web or material, and there fore to enable the roll to withstand the strain at the points indicated the metallic rings are employed, they beinginserted into the rolls at go the points indicated, and in the manner hereinbefore mentioned. a
What I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- As a new manufacture, a wooden roll or shell having in each enda polygonal-shaped sition band or ring if located at the point and 70 seat or bore for its supporting shaft or shafts In testimony whereofl have hereunto set my and a metallic ringinserted in each end of the hand and seal in the presence of two subscribroll intermediate of the openingand the peing witnesses.
riphery of the roll or shell, whereby the walls ROBERT BELL. [L. s.] 5 surroundingthe opening and the roll or shell Witnesses:
are strengthened, substantially as and for the THOS. M. MOORE,
purpose described. THEO. T. LINOKE.
