Claims. (Cl. 80-51) This invention relates to rolling Vmill guides, particularly for reversing type mills which are adapted to roll wideange beams.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved guide which is of simplied construction and has fewer parts and can be installed or adjusted more quickly and easily than previous guides for such mills.
A further object is to provide an improved guide that does not cause cobbles in the mill and that prolongs roll life by removing from the rolls pieces of steel or scale picked up in a rolling operation.
A further object is to provide improved top and bottom guiding devices, either of which can be used in conjunction with an opposite guiding device of any standard or desired construction, thereby enabling one of the improved guiding devices to be installed in an existing mill without changing both.
In accomplishing these and other objects of theinvention, I have provided 'improved details of structure, a preferred form of which is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved guide;
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line lI-H of Figure l;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on line III-III of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on line lV-IV of Figure l; and
Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view showing the compression spring mounting for holding the upper guide members in position.
The drawing shows part of a large reversing mill which includes two sets of housings 10 and 12 and two sets of shape rolls 13 and 14 mounted in the respective housings and situated rather closely together for tandem operation. Tie bars 15 extend between each set of said housings for holding them in position. The mill is adapted to roll wide-ange beams B, which must be guided as they travel between the two sets of rolls. The rolls 13 are the main rolls which shape the beam, while the rolls 14 are edger rolls which shape only the outside edges of its anges.
The guide of the present invention comprises upper and lower holders 16 and 17 which are supported on the tie bars 15. The support means for the upper holder 16 includes an upstanding leg 18 pivoted to one of the tie bars which extend between the housings 12 and a hookshaped portion 19 resting on one of the tie bars which extend between the housings 10. The support means for the lower holder 17 includes a pair of depending legs 20 whose underfaces have notches which receive two of the tie bars. Each side face of each holder 16 and 17 carries a pair of adjusting screws 21 which abut the inner walls of the housings for centering the guide laterally with respect to the rolls 13 and 14.
The underface of the upper guide holder 16 contains an end cutout 22 adjacent the rolls 13, a central cutout 23, and another end cutout 24 adjacent the rolls 14. A main upper guide bar 25 is pivoted at its inner end to Patented sept. 11, 1956 the upper holder 16 on a pivot pin 26, and an auxiliary upper guide'bar f27 is similarly pivoted thereto on a pivot pin 28. Said upper guide bars have upstanding'ribs on their upperi faces that'slidably iit within the three cutouts in the holder. The upper edges of the rib portions which are received in the central cutout 23 extend above the holder, where they are received within the eye of a clamp 29. A collar 30, spring 31 and nut 32 are mounted on said clamp and urge the upper edges of the two ribs together.
The upper face of the lower holder 17 contains an end cutout 33 adjacent the rolls 13, a central cutout 34, .and another end cutout 35 adjacent the rolls 14. A main lower guide bar 36 is pivoted at its inner end to the lower holder on a pivot pin 37 and an auxiliary lower guide bar 38 is similarly pivoted thereto on a'pivot pin 39. Said lower guide bars have downwardly depending ribs that are similar to those on theupper guide bars and slidably lit within the three cutouts in the lower holder.
The four guide bars 25, 27, 36 and 38 have stripper portions 25a, 27a, 36a and 38a at their outer ends, which .portions tit the curvature of the rolls 13 and 14. Optionally the stripper portions of the two auxiliary guide bars 27 and 38 can have tongues 40 that are received in circumferential grooves 41 in the edger rolls 14 to steady the guide.V The spring 31, by urging the inner ends of the upper guide bars -25 and 27 together, urges their stripper portions 25a and 27a into engagement with the upper rolls 13 and 14. The lower guide bars 36 and 38 are balanced so thatrtheir stripper portions 36a and 38a are urged gravitationally into engagement with the lower rolls. in each instance the pivotal mounting enables the guide bars to move Awith the rolls. The stripper portions rest across the entire web forming faces of the main rolls 13 and thus serve alsol to remove any pieces of steel or scale picked up during a rolling operation.
The guide bars 25,27, 36 and 38 are formed as mains and auxiliaries to fit particular mills more conveniently. ln other installations the guide bars can be of the same length. Referring to the cross sectional view of Figure 3, it is seen that the guide bars have ilat work engaging surfaces that conform rather closely to the spaces between the iianges of the beam B. Thus the guide bars effectually guide the beam between the two sets of rolls. For rolling beams of different cross section, the guide bars are readily removable and replaceable with bars of other dimensions. It is also apparent that the lower guiding device composed of the lower holder 17 and lower guide bars 36 and 38, can be used with upper guiding devices of any standard or desired construction, and likewise the upper guiding device can be used with other lower guiding devices.
While I have shown and described only a single embodiment of the invention, it is apparent that modifications may arise. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the disclosure set forth but only by the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A guiding device for a rolling mill comprising a holder adapted to be supported on the tie rods of a pair of rolling mill housings, said holder having a horizontal face and a cutout extending vertically from said horizontal face, a pair of rigid guide bars each having a continuous work engaging face and a rib extending vertically from the side opposite its work engaging face, said ribs being received in said cutout, means pivotally connect-r ing said ribs to said holder adjacent the inner ends of the bars enabling said bars to pivot on horizontal axes, and stripper portions on the outer ends of said bars, the inner ends of said bars being situated closely adjacent each other so that the two bars together extend substantially the full length of the holder and Iprovide substantially continuous work engaging faces vertically spaced holder, said bars being biased to position their work engaging faces in a horizontal plane.
2. AV guiding device for a rolling mill comprising a holder adapted to be supported on the tie rodsr of a pair of rolling mill housings, said holder having a horizontal face and a central cutout and end cutouts at its opposite ends extending vertically from its horizontal face, a pair of rigid guide bars each having a continuous work engaging face and ribs extending vertically from the side opposite said work engaging face, the i ribs on one of said bars being received in said central cutout and one of said end cutouts, the ribs on said other bar being received in said central cutout and said other end cutout, means pivotally connecting said ribs to said holder adjacent the inner ends of the bars enabling said bars to pivot on horizontal axes, and stripper portions on the outer ends of said bars, the inner ends of said bars being situated closeiy adjacent each other so that the two bars together extend substantially the full length of the holder and provide substantially continuous work engaging faces vertically spaced throughout their length from the horizontal face of said holder, said bars being biased to position their Y work engaging faces in a horizontal plane.
3. A lower guiding device for a rolling mill comprising a holder adapted to be supported on the tie rods of a pair of rolling mill housings, said holder having an upper horizontal face and a cutout extending vertically downward from said horizontal face, a pair of rigid guide bars each having a continuous upper work engaging face and a rib extending vertically downward from its underside and received in said cutout, means pivotally connecting said ribs to said holder enabling said bars to pivot on horizontal axes, and stripper portions on the outer ends of said bars, the inner ends of said bars being situated closely adjacent each other so that the two bars together extend substantially the full length of the holder and provide substantially continuous work engaging faces vertically spaced throughout their length from the horizontal face of said holder, said pivotal connecting means being situated adjacent the inner ends of theV bars to bias the bars gravitationally to positions in which their work engaging faces are in a horizontal plane.
4. An upper guiding device for a rolling mill comprising a holder adapted to be supported on the tie rods of a pair of rolling mill housings, said holder having a lower horizontal face and a central cutout and end cutouts at its opposite ends extending vertically upward from said horizontal face, a pair of guide bars each having a lower work engaging face and ribs extending vertically upward from its upper side, the ribs on one of said bars being received in said central cutout and one of said end cutouts, the ribs on said othertbar being received in said central cutout and said other end cutout, means pivotally connecting said ribs to said holder enabling said bars to pivot on horizontal axes, stripper portions on the outer ends of said bars, the inner ends of said bars being situated 'closely adjacent each other so that the two bars together extend substantially the full length of the holder and provide work engaging faces throughout this length, and means biasing said bars to positions in which their work engaging faces are in a horizontal plane.
5. A guiding device as defined in claim 4 in which the ribs received in said central, cutout extend above the upper face of said holder, and said biasing means includes a spring connected to these ribs and urging them together.
