DEVICES FOR TRANSFERRING MAGNETIC MATERIALS Filed June 7, 1952 INVENTQR AAZPH M/MZ BY 4&4,
ATTORNEY DEVICES FOR TRANSFERRING MAGNETIC 1 MATERIALS Ralph J. Mallin, New York, N. Y.
Application June 7, 1952, Serial No. 292,310
3 Claims. (Cl. 29465.5)
This invention relates to improvements in devices for transferring magnetic materials from bulk to a place of use.
It has for a principal object the provision of a tool carrying a magnet adapted to be reciprocated therein, said tool having a non-metallic plate in one base thereof positioned to be contacted by the magnet in one of its extreme positions, whereby said magnet mayhold magnetizable articles while they are being transferred to another point, and means under the operators control for moving the magnet to its other extreme position out of contact with said non-metallic plate, thereby releasing the magnetic articles.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a magnetic device of the character described wherein the magnet is positioned in a rectangular chamber, andwherein a manually actuated lever extends into said chamber through a slot in one wall thereof for moving the magnet to a position remote from the base thereof.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
Referring to the drawings, which are given by way of example to illustrate the invention:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device as seen from above;
Figure 2 is a cross sectional elevation of the device, taken along the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional elevation taken along the line 33 'of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a view of the device taken from below.
The device includes a casing which is somewhat U-shaped in form, having a solid depending portion 11 on one end thereof, and having a hollow depending portion 12 on the other end thereof. The portion 12 has a cavity 13 formed therein which is closed by a nonmagnetic plate 14 secured to the portion 12 by means of escutcheon pins 15, or in any other suitable manner. The upper end of the cavity 13 has a curved wall 16 which conforms .to the upper end 17 of a horseshoe magnet 18; the wall 19 of the cavity 13 has a vertical slot 20 formed therein.
Extending into the cavity 13 via the slot 20 is a lever 21 having a ball-shaped end 22 which'engages the inner surface 23 of the magnet; and the other end of this lever has a hole 33 formed therein. A bolt 24 having a head 25 formed thereon extends upwardly in a hole 26 formed in the body 10, and has, engaging the threads thereon in spaced relation to the head, a nut 27 forming a clearance between the head and itself. The upper end of the bolt 24 is engaged by a second nut 28, which is set into the counterbore 29.
Operation The form of the invention shown in the present application is particularly adapted for use by upholsterers, and with this device tacks, of which upholsterers use 2,760,809 Patented Aug. 28, 1956 large quantities, are usually bought'in bulk, and the use of this device eliminates the former method of picking up the tacks in bulk with a spoon, putting them into some kind of a container, moving them to a point of use, and dumping them out in a suitable receptacle.
With the present. device the portion containing the non-metallic plate 14 is placed in contact with the tacks, for instance in bulk, with the result that a large number of tacks pile up on the plate 14. Then the device is moved over to a receptacle at the point of use, the operator engaging the horizontal portion between the portions 11 and 12, and when the group of tacks are over the receptacle at the point of use, the operator may then pull upwardly on the handle 21, thereby raising the magnet upwardly until the upper portion thereof is in contact with the curved wall 16 of the cavity, thereby removing the magnetizing force from the vicinity of the plate 14. Now, since the magnetizing influence is removed, the group of tacks falls off the device and lands in the receptacle at the point of use.
By the use of this device tacks may be transferred much more rapidly and with less chance of injury to the worker because there is no reasonfor him to put his hands in contact with any tacks while making such transfers.
Although I have here shown and described one form of the device by Way of example, I do not wish to be limited to the exact form shown, as many variations may be made in the device within the scope of the following claims. I
What is claimed is:
1. In a device of the character described, a generally U-shaped body having a horizontal portion with depending portions on each end thereof, one of said depending portions having a cavity formed therein, a U-shaped magnet reciprocally carried in said cavity, a non-metallic plate forming a closure for'the lower end of said cavity, and a lever beneath said handle and pivotally connected to said body adjacent to the other of said depending portions and having a portion extending into said cavity in a position to engage and raise said magnet when said lever is pulled upwardly toward the handle by a user.
2. In a device of the character described, a body having a portion forming a handle, a portion angular with respect thereto and having a cavity formed therein, a wall of said cavity adjacent to said handle having a vertical slot formed therein, a non-magnetic plate forming a closure for said slot and the lower end of said cavity, a magnet reciprocally carried in said cavity, and lever means adjacent to said handle and extending through said slot and operatively engaged with said magnet and having a portion thereof adjacent to said handle, said magnet being normally positioned in contact with said plate and adapted to be moved to a position spaced apart therefrom by the actuation of said lever means, said lever means being comprised of a rod having an enlarged rounded end engaging said magnet and having a hole adjacent to the opposite end and engaged with bolt means extending through said handle.
3. In a device of the character described, a body having a portion forming a handle, a portion angular with respect thereto and having a cavity formed therein, a wall of said cavity adjacent to said handle having a vertical slot formed therein, a non-magnetic plate forming a closure for said slot and the lower end of said cavity, a magnet reciprocally carried in said cavity, and lever means adjacent to said handle and extending through said slot and operatively engaged with said magnet and having a portion thereof adjacent to said handle, said magnet being normally positioned in contact with said plate and adapted to be moved to a position spaced apart therefrom by the actuation of said lever means, said handle having a depending portion spaced apart from and substantially to the portion carrying the magnegwhereby a users hand engages the handle between said portions and said device maysit substan ti'all y level when not in use.
