CARAFE HANDLE Filed March 11, 1950 Patented June 3, 1952 CARAFE HANDLE Max Alex, Pasadena, Calif., assgnor to Sparkletts Drinking Water Corporation,. Los Angeles,
Calif., a corporation of California Application March 11,- 1950, serial No. 149,183'
(c1. zal- 27) 4 Claims.
This invention has to do generally with handles for objects and particularly with handles adapted to be detachably secured to bottles and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide a novel, attractive, detachable handle for a bottle or other object having a neck-like upper end.
Another object is'to provide a detachable handle of the type indicated which embodies a simple latch mechanism for securing the handle to a bottle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a detachable handle of simple construction which can be made from a variety of materials and which is so designed that the major parts thereof can be cast, molded, or fabricated by other mass production methods.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a detachable handle which is easy to use in that it may be readily quickly secured or detached from a bottle and when secured, provides a rm means for grasping the bottle.
These and other objects will be apparent from the drawing and the following description thereof.
Referring to the drawing, which is for illustrative purposes only:
Fig. 1 is an elevational View of a handle device embodying the invention shown on ia bottle;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional View substantially on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a section substantially on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
More particularly describing the invention, reference numeral I I generally indicates a bottle having a neck I2, the upper end of which has exterior screw threads I3 and a peripheral bead or rim I4 below the threads.
The handle device of the invention is generally indicated by numeral I8 and comprises a body 20 which includes an annular collar 2| having an arm 22 which extends radially therefrom. The collar 2| is provided at its upper end with an opening or bore 23. Below this, the inner wall 25 of the collar is conoidal in character; dverging from a shoulder 26 to the lower end portion 21 where the wall tapers outwardly.
The collar is designed to t over the neck of the bottle to the point where the lower end 21 rests upon the enlarged diverging portion of the bottle and the shoulder 26 rests upon the rim or bead I4 of the bottle.
For the purpose of detachably securing the handle in place a latch is provided, and this comprises a pin 30 which is received in bores 3| and 32 of the arm 22 formed on the collar. The arm tion. A compression spring 34 is provided between the shoulder 35 and a washer 36 bearing against a pin 31. The inner end of the latch pin 30 is provided with a latch disk 40 having a somewhat beveled face 4| adapted to t under the rim I4 of the bottle and the disk is held inthis position yieldably by the compression spring 34. 'I'he outer end of the latch pin may be provided with a knob 44 for convenience in operating the pin.
At its outer end the arm 22 is tted with a hand grip 46 which is shown as being provided with a bolt 41 at its upper end for reception in a suitable threaded insert 48 provided in the arm 22.
While it is contemplated that the latch mech- .anism may be made of metal, the other parts of the device can be conveniently made of metal, plastic, or other suitable material.
In the use of the device the latch pin is retracted and the collar 2| slipped over the neck of the bottle until it is in the position shown in the drawings. The latch pin is then released to position the latch disk beneath the rim, thereby locking the handle in position on the bottle.
Although the invention has been particularly shown and described, it is contemplated that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the scope thereof as indicated by the following claims.
I claim:
1. A detachable handle for a bottle having a neck of reduced diameter with a peripheral bead comprising a body providing an annular collar for receiving the neck of the bottle, an Iarm projecting substantially radially of said collar, a latch pin slidably mounted in said arm and extending through said collar, a member on the inner end of said pin for engaging the bead on said bottle, and a spring interposed between the pin and said arm yieldably urging said pin inwardly toward said bottle.
2. A detachable handle for a bottle having a neck of reduced diameter providing a peripheral bead, comprising a body having an annular collar for receiving the neck of the bottle, said collar providing a radially inwardly projecting shoulder for abutting engagement with the outer side of said bead, said collar extending axially a substantial distance beyond said shoulder for engagement with the bottle, a latch pin slidably mounted in said body and extending through said collar for engagement with the inner side of said :main ertionrandamerik y,etermithzamerinhgrahh jingportion between me sneak @and imam 'pprtion.
i 3 bead, and spring means Vmounted in said body for urging said latch pin toward the bottle.
3.
