'1 Claim. (Cl. 119-105) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in clamps for attaching to a cows tail to prevent the switching thereof while the cow is being milked.

An important object of this invention .is to provide a clamp of this character composed of a pair of elongated coacting clamping jaws equipped with pivoted spring biased handles for opening the jaws to easily and quickly place the clamp in position on a cows tail and to prevent the flexing of the tail.

Another object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is strong and durable, efficient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which the same is intended.

These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the a:- companying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the clamp in position;

Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on a line 44 of Figure 2;

Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purposes of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates the clamp generally and is composed of a pair of substantially semi-cylindrical jaws 6 and 7, each jaw being constructed of a pair of strips 8 of strap metal or other suitable material and secured to each other in spaced parallel relation by arcuate cross-bars or connectors 9 which are secured at the outer surfaces of the strips 8. The opposing or inner surfaces of the strips 8 are curved transversely, as shown at 10, to conform substantially to the arc of a cows tail 11 on which the clamp is placed.

A pair of handles 12 and 13, preferably of strap metal construction, are formed with arcuate inner end portions 14 which are riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the outer surfaces of the strips 8 of the jaws at a point substantially midway of the ends thereof. The central portions of the handles 12 and 13 are formed with laterally projecting tongues 15 and 16 which are pivoted to each other in overlapping relation by rivets or the like 17 to pivotally connect the handles to each other.

The outer ends of the handles are inclined outwardly with respect to each other and bendable clips 18 are integrally formed at the opposing faces of the outer end portions of the handles to clamp the end portions 19 of a substantially U-shaped wire spring 20 thereto in a position between the outer end portion of the handle to urge the jaws 6 and 7 into a closed position.

In the operation of the device, the outer ends of the handles 12 and 13 are squeezed to open the jaws 6 and 7 whereupon the same may be easily and quickly placed in a desired position on the cows tail 11, and the elongated construction of the jaws will thus prevent the flex- .ing of the tail. The spring 20 maintain the jaws in closed position to prevent displacement thereof. The overlapping tongues 15 and 16 of the handles reduce to a minimum any tendency of the jaws to twist by the attempt of the cow to flex her tail and thus effectively restrain such flexing action.

From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claim.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

A clamp comprising a pair of semi-cylindrical jaws, each of said jaws consisting of a plurailty of rigid longitudinal and parallel strips which are spaced apart and which are semi-cylindrical, a pair of arcuate cross bars secured to said parallel strips and extending transversely of said strips and across the space between said strips, a pair of rigid handles, each handle having an arcuate cross bar at its inner end, the arcuate cross bars of said handles being located between the cross bars of each jaw and secured to the longitudinal strips with which they contact, one handle having a first pair of laterally projecting tongues between the ends thereof, the other handle having a pair of laterally projecting tongues between the ends thereof and nested within said first pair of tongues, all of said tongues being parallel, the four of said tongues having aligned apertures therein, pivot means in said apertures in said tongues pivotally connecting said handles together to prevent the tendency of the jaws from twisting relative to each other, and a spring attached to both of said handles adjacent to said pivot means holding said jaws in a normally closed position.
