Referring to the drawings wherein for the purposeof illustration a preferred embodiment of the invention is shown the numeral 5 denotes the shaft of the winding reel, one end of which is supported by a fixed bearing 6 in the front wall 7 of gear housingS and a bearing 9, Fig. 11, mounted on adjustable cross bars 9. The cross bars are attached to side walls 10 of the housing by bolts 11 for vertical adjustment and studs 12 mounted in lugs 13 attached to the side walls, have bearingv engagement with the upper edge ofv the cross. bars for adjusting the cross bars downwardly andupwardly when thebolts 11 are loosened. The opposite end of shaft 5 is supported in a conical bearing 14 mounted on the upper end of post 15. The cross bar 52 is inclined in a forward direction and attached tothe top thereof is an angle bar 53'on which are mounted a series of spindles 54, in spaced apart relation, forreceiving the yarn packages or spools 55, shown in Fig; 4, the-spools having the usual flanges 55. As shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 11 the gearing for operating the Winding reel is contained within the gear housing 8. Mounted on the shaft of the reel is a double groove pulley 65 which is driven by a belt 66 connected to a double groove pulley 67 mounted on idler shaft 68. A pair of change speed pulleys 69 and 70 are mounted on the idler shaft and are driven by a belt '71 connected with the change speed pulleys 72 and 73 mounted on shaft 74 of a motor 75. One end of reciprocating guide rod 62 extends through an opening 76 in the front wall 7 of the gear housing being pivotally connected at 77 to eccentric 78 mounted on the upper end of shaft 79 journaled in brackets 80 and 81. A bevel gear 82 fixed on shaft 79 below bracket 80 is in mesh with bevel gear 83 mounted on shaft 84 journaled in bearings 85 and 86. A sprocket wheel 87 mounted on shaft 84 is driven by sprocket chain 88 connected to a drive sprocket 89 mounted on the reel shaft 5. An idler sprocket 90 engaged with the sprocket chain is provided to take up the slack in the chain.
A locking mechanism for retaining the yarn packages or spools on their spindles is shown in Figs. 4 and 5. A lock bar 91 extends longitudinally of the spindle frame above the cross bar 52 and to the rear of the spindles 54 that support the yarn spools 55. The bar is provided at its ends with pivot pins 92 journaled in brackets 93 attached to the end members 57. An arm 94 attached to and depending from the ends of pivot pins 92 connects with one end of a coil spring 95 having its opposite end attached to a bracket 96 secured to cross bar 52. The tension of coil springs 95 normally swing the lock bar 91 so its lower edge is disposed over the flange of the yarn spool 55, thus retaining the yarn spools on their spindles and preventing accidental removal of the spools from the spindles due to the pull of the yarn on the spool during the winding operation. A dog 97 aflixed to one of the pivot pins 92 and depending therefrom is adapted to be engaged by one end of a latch lever 98 when the lock bar 91 is swung rearwardly and the latch lever is in a horizontal position thereby holding the lock bar free of the spool flange so the spools may be removed from the spindles. The latch lever 98 is pivotally suspended from bracket 93 by arm 99 attached to the lever intermediate its ends and is normally disposed in a horizontal position. A latch release lever 100 having its upper end disposed beneath the outer end of the latch lever is pivotally mounted in a bracket 101 attached to the top of gear housing 8. A yoke 102 extending laterally from the lower end of lever 100 engages with an arm 103 attached to yoke 41, so that when yoke 41 is moved to expand the paddles of the reel the latch release lever is moved to release the latch dog 97 to permit the lock bar 91 to assume a locking position under the action of springs 95. The actuation of the latch'lever to release the latch dog is performed by plate 104 attached to the upper end of release lever 100 which has a beveled edge 105 in engagement with the lower edge of the latch lever 98 so that when release lever 100 is moved the latch lever is raised by the beveled edge of plate 104. A shoulder 106 at the upper end of the beveled edge limits the movement of the release lever in one direction and a coil spring 107 having one end attached to plate 104 and its opposite end to cross bar 52 swings the release lever in the opposite direction when yoke 41 is moved to contract the paddles of the reel.
The pneumatically operated cylinders 18 and 43 are controlled by conventional foot operated valve mechanisms for admitting compressed air to either end of the cylinders.
In operation, the packages or spools of yarn are mounted on the spindles 54 and the strands of yarn drawn from the spools over hooks 59 disposed above the spools and then threaded through the eyes 64- of guide arms 63 before being attached to one of the paddles 27 of the reel. The reel is rotated by starting the motor 75 which drives the reel shaft 5. During the reeling operation the rod 62 is reciprocated so that the guide arms 63 move the strands of yarn back and forth to perform the skein formation in the usual manner. When all of the yarn from the spools has been wound on the reel cylinder 49 is actuated to move the collar 38 to the right which through operation of the links 40 and connecting bars 34 operates the toggle links 31, 32 to simultaneously retract the arms 25 of disks 23 to contract the paddles 27 so the skeins of yarn may be easily removed from the reel. To permit the skeins to be removed from the end of the reel, cylinder 18 is operated to swing post 15 to the left or away from the end of the reel thus removing the bearing 14 from engagement with the end of shaft 5. After removal of the skeins of yarn the cylinder 18 is operated to move post 15 to the right and bring the bearing 14 into engagement with the end of shaft 5 and then collar 33 through operation of cylinder 49 is moved to the left to move the paddles 27 to expanded position. When the paddles 27 of the reel are expanded by movement of collar 38, release lever 100 for the latch lever 98 is moved by arm 1G3 attached to yoke 41 to release the latch lever from engagement with dog 97 thus allowing spring to swing the lock bar 91 so its lower edge engages over the flanges of the spools 55 to retain the spools on their spindles until the winding operation is completed. When the paddles of the reel are contracted, release lever is moved by spring 107 to allow latch lever 98 to swing into engaging position with dog 97, as the lock bar 91 is manually swung outwardly to a non-locking position. Thus, it is seen the latch lever holds the lock bar in a nonlocking position while the empty spools are removed from the spindles and replaced with full spools of yarn.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
1. A skein Winding reel comprising a rotatable shaft, a series of fixed disks mounted on said shaft, a series of radially "slidable arms mounted in each disk for movement beyond the periphery of the disk, paddles attached to the outer ends of the corresponding arms of said disks, toggle joints connected to said arms and said disks for extending and retracting said arms in a perpendicular plane, reciprocating bars connecting the corresponding toggle joints of each disk for simultaneous movement, a movable collar on said shaft adjacent one of the end disks, and means connecting said collar with said toggle joints of said end disk for acuating the toggle joints upon movement of said collar.
2. A skein winding reel of the character described in claim 1 including a pivoted lever having a yoke con nected with said collar, and means for moving said lever to move said collar.
3. A skein winding reel of the character described in claim 1 including a pivoted lever having a yoke connected with said collar, and pneumatic operating means connected with said lever for actuating said lever to move said collar. I
4. A skein winding reel comprising a rotatable shaft,
expansible and contractable paddles mounted on said shaft, a spindle rack having a series of spindles mounted above said paddles, yarn spools mounted on said spindles having their yarns connected to one of said paddles, a lock bar extending longitudinally of said spindle rack and pivotally mounted thereon, means normally holding said lock bar in locking engagement with the flanges of said yarn spools, a latch lever for holding said lock bar in non-locking position, and means for simultaneously expanding said paddles and releasing said latch lever.
5. A skein winding reel comprising a rotatable shaft, expansible and contractable paddles mounted on said shaft, a spindle rack having a series of spindles mounted above said paddles, yarn spools mounted on said spindles having their yarns connected to one of said paddles, a lock bar extending longitudinally of said spindle rack and pivotally mounted thereon, means normally holding said lock bar in locking engagement with the flanges of said spools, a latch lever for holding said lock bar in non locking position, a release lever for actuating said latch lever to release said lock bar, means for expanding and contracting said paddles, and a movable collar on said shaft for simultaneously operating said expanding means and said release lever.
6. A skein winding reel comprising a rotatable shaft, a series of disks mounted on said shaft, a series of radially slidable arms mounted in each disk for movement beyond the periphery of the disk, paddles attached to the outer ends of the corresponding arms of said disks, toggle joints connected to said arms and said disks for extending and retracting said arms in a perpendicular plane, reciprocating bars connecting the corresponding toggle joints of each disk for simultaneous movement, a collar movably mounted on said shaft adjacent one of the end disks, links connecting said collar with the toggle joints of the end disk, a pivoted lever having a yoke connected with said collar, and pneumatic means for operating said lever to reciprocate said collar.
7. A skein winding reel comprising a rotatable shaft, fixed bearings supporting one end of said shaft, a bearing movable into and out of supporting engagement with the other end of said shaft, means for moving said movable bearing into and out-of engagement with the end of said shaft, a series of disks mounted on said shaft, a series of radially slidable arms mounted in each disk, paddles attached to the outer ends of the corresponding arms of said disks, toggle joints connected to said arms and said disks for extending and retracting the arms in a perpendicular plane, reciprocating bars connecting the corresponding toggle joints of each disk for simultaneous movement, a collar movably mounted on said shaft, links connecting said collar with said toggle joints, and means for moving said collar to expand and contract said toggle joints.
8. A skein winding reel comprising a rotatable shaft, a pair of bearings supporting one end of said shaft, a movable bearing supporting the other end of said shaft, means for moving said bearing into and out-of engagement with the end of said shaft, a series of disks mounted on said shaft, a series of radially movable arms mounted in each disk, paddles attached to the outer ends of the corresponding arms of said disks, toggle joints connected to said arms and said disks, connecting rods between the corresponding toggle joints of said disks, a collar slidably mounted on said shaft adjacent one of the end disks, means connecting said collar with said toggle joints for actuating the same, a spindle rack having a series of spindles mounted above said paddles, yarn spools mounted on said spindles having their yarns connected to one of said paddles, a hingedly mounted lock bar extending longitudinally of said spindle rack, means normally holding said lock bar in locking engagement with the flanges of said yarn spools, a latch lever for holding said lock bar in non-locking position, and a release lever for said latch lever operated by said collar.
9. A skein winding reel comprising a rotatable shaft, a series of paddles extending longitudinally of said shaft in parallel spaced relation thereto, a plurality of toggle joints at spaced apart intervals connecting said paddles to said shaft, reciprocating means connecting said joints for simultaneous movement, means for actuating said toggle joints to radially move said paddles towards and from said shaft in parallel relation thereto, and means for guiding the movement of said paddles in a straight radial plane at right angles to the plane of said shaft.
10. A skein winding reel comprising a rotatable shaft, expansible and contractible paddles mounted on said shaft, a spindle rack having a series of spindles mounted above said paddles, yarn spools mounted on said spindles having yarns connected to one of said paddles, a movable lock bar mounted above said spindle rack, means normally holding said lock bar in locking engagement with the flanges of said yarn spools, means for holding said lock bar in non-locking position, and means for simultaneously expanding said paddles and releasing said last mentioned means.
11. A skein winding reel comprising a rotatable shaft, expansible and contractable paddles mounted on said shaft, a spindle rack having a series of spindles mounted above said paddles, yarn spools mounted on said spindles having yarns connected to one of said paddles, a movable lock bar mounted above said spindle rack for movement into and out-of locking engagement with the flanges of said yarn spools, and releasable means for holding said lock bar in non-locking position.
12. A skein winding reel comprising a shaft rotatably mounted at one end, a series of paddles parallel to the axis of said shaft, expanding and contracting means con meeting said paddles to said shaft, means for operating said expanding and contracting means, a post pivotally mounted for swinging movement towards and from the free end of said shaft, a conical bearing carried by said post for revolubly supporting the free end of said shaft, and means for swinging said post to engage and disengage said conical bearing with the free end of the shaft.
13. A skein winding reel of the character described in claim 12 including pneumatic means for swinging said post.
14. A skein winding reel of the character described in claim 12 including an adjustable bearing rotatably supporting said shaft that is adjustable to aline the free end of said shaft to engage the conical bearing carried by said post.
