Description

July 31, 1956 R. T. DEWEY DEVICE FOR WASHING AUTOMOBILES Filed Feb. 19, 1952 Ray I Dewey INVENTOR 9 BY mlfiaway fifjmi United.
This invention relates in general to a device for washing automobiles, and more specifically to a washing device which has a handle portion in the form of a water inlet conduit and a washing head with an internal supply of water.
The primary object of this invention is to provide an improved washing device for washing automobiles and the like, said device including an elongated conduit which may be utilized as a handle, and a washing head of soft material, whereby the various portions of an automobile may be washed while standing at a distance therefrom.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved washing device for washing automobiles and the like, said device including a washing head having a removable washing element mounted thereon.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved washing device having a washing head which includes a slotted elongated pipe portion, a pad of resilient material surrounding said pipe portion and being provided with slots therein in alignment therein with the slots in the pipe portion, and a perforated washing element enclosing said pipe portion and resilient pad.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved washing device for washing automobiles and the like, said washing device including a conduit which may be utilized as a handle, and a washing head, the end portion of the conduit adjacent said washing head being provided with a sleeve of soft material to prevent accidental marring of the automobile being washed by the washing device.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved washing device which is of relatively simple construction whereby it may be economically manufactured.
Another object of this invention is to provide a washing device having a combined handle and water inlet conduit, said conduit having attached thereto at one end a washing head, the Washing head being offset with respect to the plane of the conduit, said conduit having a curved opposite end with a fitting thereon for attachment to a conventional garden hose.
A further object of this invention is to provide an im proved Washing device for washing automobiles and the like whereby the various portions of the automobile may be conveniently reached by the utilization of the washing device without danger of marring the vehicle during the washing process.
With these object definitely in view, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of elements and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail in the specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a material part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the washing device, which is the subject of this invention, said washing device being illustrated with a section of garden hose secured to the rear end thereof;
Patent Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view of the washing end of the Washing device of Figure l and showing the details of the various elements forming the washing head of the washing device;
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 3-3 of Figure 1 and showing the manner in which the various elements of the washing head appear in their assembled state; and,
Figure 4 is an enlarged transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially upon the plane indicated by the section line 44 of Figure l and shows the relationship between the sleeve formed of soft material and the washing head end of the conduit on which it is located.
Similar characters of reference are employed to designate similar or identical elements and portions throughout the specification and throughout the different views of the drawings.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that there is illustrated in Figure 1 the washing device which is the subject of this invention. The washing device includes a conduit 10 which has mounted at its front end a washing head 12, and a hose connection 14 at its rear end.
The conduit 10 is in the form of a section of pipe having a curved front end 16 to which is secured at right angles thereto a portion of pipe 18. The pipe portion 18 is closed at each of its ends and communicates with the conduit 16. It will be noted that the pipe portion 18 is to be considered a portion of the washing head 12.
The washing head 12 also includes a pad of resilient material 20 which is formed of sponge rubber or the like. The resilient pad 20 is wrapped around the pipe portion 18 and secured thereto in any conventional manner including an adhesive. The resilient pad 20 is provided with a plurality of spaced parallel slots 22 therethrough, the slots 22 being in alignment with slots 24 in the underside of the pipe portion 18. The primary purpose of the resilient pad 20 is to properly pad the pipe portion 18.
The washing head 12 also includes a hood type washing element 26 which is in the form of a sheet of soft material suitable for washing, such as sheepskin or other suitable material. The washing element 26 includes a substantially rectangular body portion 28 and a pair of triangular flaps 30 integral with each side thereof. The edges of the body portion 28 are provided with zipper elements 32 which have slides 34 thereon. The triangular flaps 30 are provided with snap means for securing them together, said snap means including female snap elements 36 on one of the flaps and male snap elements 38 on the other of said flaps.
After the pipe portion 18 has been provided with the resilient pad 20, the washing element 26 is secured thereon by closing the zipper elements 32. The triangular flaps 30 are provided to enclose the surface of the zipper elements 32 to prevent same from marring an automobile being washed by the washing device, which is the subject of this invention. The flaps 30 are then secured together by engaging the snap elements 36 and 38, and the pipe portion 18 is totally enclosed within a covering of sheepskin or other soft material. In order that water may pass out of the washing head 12 onto the surface being washed by the device, the body portion 28 of the washing element 26 is provided with a plurality of perforations 40.
In order that the lower curved end 16 of the conduit 10 does not mar the paint of an automobile being washed by the Washing device, it is provided with a sleeve of soft material such as sheepskin or any other suitable material. It will be noted by referring to Figure 1 that the sleeve 42 covers the entire curved front portion 16 of the conduit and extends partially up the straight portion thereof.
3 Referring now to Figure 1 in particular, it will be seen that the curved rear end 14 of the conduit 10 is provided with a short length of rubber hose 44 which is tightly engaged thereon, and 'forms a grip portion for. the washing device.- The curved rear end 14 of the conduit 10 has a that the washing head 12, due to the curved front portion 16 of the conduit 10, is positioned at an angle to the conduit 10 so that it may be easily applied to the roof of an automobile or other: similar surfaces. The curved rear end .14 of the conduit permits the garden hose 50 to be directed generally towards the ground without a sharp bend therein which would urge the conduit 10 into a vertical posiiton. The garden hose 50 assuming a natural position, there is no twisting on the conduit due to the hose being connected thereto.
The operation of this device will be understood from the foregoing description of the details thereof, taken in connection with the above recited objects and drawings. Further description would appear to be unnecessary.
Minor modifications of the device, varying in minor details from the embodiment of the device illustrated and described here, may be resorted to without departure from the spirit and scope of this invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new 1. A washing device comprising a combined handle and water conduit, a washing head at one end of said conduit, a hose connection at the other end of the conduit, said washing head including a pipe portion extending transversely of said conduit and communicating therewith,
water passages through said pipe portion, a covering over said pipe portion, said covering including a hood type washing element formed from a normally flat piece of material, water passages through said washing element aligned with said water passages in said pipe portion, said washing element including zipper means for retaining said washing element on said pipe portion, flaps inclosing said zipper means, said flaps being secured together by internal snaps.
2. A washing device comprising a combined handle and water conduit, a washing head at one end of said conduit, a hose connection at the other end of the conduit, said washing head including a pipe portion extending transversely of said conduit and communicating therewith, water passages through said pipe portion, a covering over said pipe portion, said covering including a resilient pad surrounding said pipe portion, a hood type washing element enclosing said pipe portion and said resilient pad, water passages through said pad and said Y washing element aligned with said water passages in said pipe portion, said washing element being formed from' a normally flat piece of material, said washing element including zipper means for retaining said washing ele ment on said pipe portion, flaps inclosing said zipper means, said flaps being secured together by internal snaps.
