Description

W. E. CONNELLY.
(No Model.)
HILL SIDE PLOW.
Patented Apr. 10,1883.
INVENTOH WI 'I'N HS S ES A ttorneyf N. PETERS Phmu-Limugn hu, wnhinpon. D4 :2.
I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM E. GONNELLY, OF wnnownn, ALABAMA.
HILLSIDE-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,594, dated April 10, 1883,
Application filed January 4, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. GONNELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wedowee, in the county of Randolph and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hillside-Flows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speci-. fication.
This invention pertains to improvements in mold-board attachments for plows, having for its object to provide for plowing on hillsides or otherwise; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a plow embodying my improvement, the same being shown in dotted lines in its lowered position. Fig. 2 isa detailed view thereof, with the sliding mold-board-operating bars removed. Fig.3 is a rear elevation thereof, looking in the direction of the arrow .of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line y y of Fig. 3.
In carrying out my invention I employ,in connection with the ordinary plow stock or standard, A, fixed to the beam B, having the usual handles, 0, said stock being braced to the beam, as at D, two side bars, E, having, a little above their middles, notches a, made in their front edges. These bars are disposed in a parallel plane with that of the inclination of the plow or shovel, and are connected, near their lower ends, to the lower portions of the two arms into which the stock or standard is formed, as seen in Figs. 3 and 4, each side bar having a clip, I), bolted thereto, with its forward portion fitting over the same edge of the coincident standard-arm, while the rear ends of said clips are connected together at the rear side of the said arms by a common bolt, 0, as most clearly seen in Fig. 4. This arrangement enables the mold-board to be disposedin about the same inclination with the plow or shovel, and the side bars with the mold-board bars, presently described, to be readily applied to an ordinary plow-standard, as illustrated,
upper ends of the side bars are fastened to the beam near its rear end, while between their ends they are adapted to stand out of line with the latter, as seen inFig. 3, to enable the sliding or mold-board bars or handles to move thereon without contact with the plow-beam, and to slide under the upper end of the plowshovels. The extreme lower ends of the side bars are extended outward, forming a hook, as at d, to prevent the mold-boards at their lower edges from springing outwardly.
F designates a sliding bar, of which there are two to a plow, one being arranged on each of the side bars, E, and the lower ends of which are attached to the mold-boards G. The upper ends of said sliding or mold-board-operating bars are formed with handles for their operation. These bars are also provided each with a loop or clip, 0, adapted to clasp or encompass the side bars, E, and engage with the notches a of the latter.
It will be noticed that in using the attachment for hillside-plowing, the sliding bar next to the slope will be so adjusted as to elevate its mold-board, while the opposite bar will be so adjusted as to lower its mold-board into the dotted-line position of Fig. 1, and thus adapt the plow for operation. The use of a duplicate arrangement of these parts is to adapt the plow to hillsides with a right or left hand slope, or for plowing along the hillside either way.
Having thus fully described my invention,I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a plow, the vertically-adjustable moldboard handle or bar, also capable of retention at the point of adjustment, in combination with the removable side bar connected to the plow stock or standard and plow-beam, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a plow, the combination, with the side bar secured to the plow or shovel standard in the plane of the inclination of the-shovel or plow, and having notches in its front edges, of the handled sliding bar provided with a moldboard, and with clips engaging with the notches of the side bar, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a plow, the side bar secured to the standard and beam in a parallel plane with that of the inclination of the shovel or plow, and hav- ICO handled sliding bar provided with a moldboard, and adj usting-elips to engage the notches of the side bar, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.

ing an ofi'set and notches, in combination with the handled sliding bar provided with clips to engage the notches of the side bar, and with a mold-board adapted to slide under the upper edge of the shovel or plow, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a plow, the side bar connected to the standard and beam in a parallel plane with that of the inclination of the plow or shovel, and having an ofl'set, a hook, (I, at its lower end, and notches a, in combination with the
