UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL CONDO, OF EAST GERMANTOWN, INDIANA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 235,341, dated December 14, 1880.
Application filed July 15, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL 00mm, of East Germantown, Wayne county, Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to afford a more secure method of attaching to the moldboards of plows those metallic sheths which are branched and slotted at their upper ends to permit sufficient play thereon of a swiveled beam; and my improvement consists in providing such sheths or standards with a lateral lug and foot, said lug and foot being fastened, respectively, to the mold-board and land-bar of the implement, as hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
' In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the landside of my improved plow. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, the beam being shown swung toward the mold-board. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section of the mold-board, taken in the plane of the sheth. Fig. at is a plan of the sheth detached from the plow.
The beam A, which may be of any suitable size, shape, and material, is pierced near its rear end to receive a bolt or other pivot, B, that engages with a staple or lug, 0, attached to the landside-handle D of the implement, the construction of this hinge-joint B 0 being such as to allow said beam A to be swung either to the right or left, as occasion may require.
E represents a metallic sheth, the lower end of which is preferably constructed with afoot, F, to receive a bolt, f, wherewith said sheth is secured to the horizontal fiange'g of the land-bar G. The upper portion of said sheth is divided so as to form a rear branch or fork, I, and afront one, I, said branches being provided, respectively, with lateral extensions or head-blocks J J, slotted longitudinally at j j, which slots may be perfectly straight, or they may be concentric with the center of motion or pivot B. Beam A rests firmly upon these head-blocks, and is secured thereto by bolts or keys or other retaining devices K K. Furthermore, this sheth has forged or welded or cast with it a lateral lug, L, adapted to support the upper part of mold-board H, to which latter said sheth is secured by a bolt or rivet,
l, as more clearly shown in Fig. 3. This lug or flange L may project either to the right or left of the sheth, according to the peculiar construction of the plow.
When it is desired to swing beam Atoward the mold-board H, as seen in Fig. 2, the bolts K K are first slackened, the beam properly set, and said bolts are then tightened so as to maintain said beam securely in its new position.
Evidently the beam can be set in the opposite direction, or toward the landside of the plow, in a precisely similar manner; but whether this lateral swing be to the right or left it is apparent the draft must": be in line with the pivot B and retaining devices K' K.
Consequently there can be moi injurious lateral strain imposed on the sheth E, or on the hinge-joint that couples the beam A to the plow-handle D.
Another important advantage results from the use of the two head-blocks J J, as they afford extended bearings for the beam A, and in case there should be any tendency to depress the front end of the latter it would be efiectually resisted by the head-block J, while any force acting to elevate this end of the beam would be opposed by the other block, J. It will thus be seen that these fore-and-aft bearings J J allow such an extended base for attachment of beam A as to effectually prevent the latter springing either up or down, and therefore the proper relative vertical distance between said beam and the point of the share will always be maintained, no matter how far the beam may be swung to the right or left.
I claim as my invention- In combination with a metallic sheth, E, having branches II, terminating, respectively, with slotted head-blocks J j J j, for supporting the swiveled plow-beam A, thef lateral foot F and lug L, attached, respectively, to the land-bar G and mold-board H, in .the manner described.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
DANIEL CONDO.
