Description
Filed Dec. 15, 1954 Ralph W. Wilson 2 IN VEN TOR.
BY mm United States Patent HYPODERMIC NEEDLE Ralph W. Wilson, Gadsden, Ala.
Application December 13, 1954, Serial No. 474,816
2 Claims. (Cl. 128221) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in hypodermic needles particularly for the dental profession and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an instrument of this character comprising relatively strong, durable pointed end portions whereby the life of said instrument will be materially increased.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an improved hypodermic needle of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, compact, highly efficient and reliable in use and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure l is an elevational view, partially in section, showing a hypodermic needle constructed in accordance with the present invention mounted in a syringe.
Figure 2 is a view in longitudinal section through the improved needle.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a tube 5 of suitable metal, preferably steel, which tube may be of any desired length and gauge.
Fixed on the tube 5 adjacent the intake end thereof, is the usual collar 6.
Rigidly secured on the ends of the tube 5 are relatively hard, durable points 7 of tungsten carbide or carbides of other metals harder and more durable than steel. The pointed end portions 7 are firmly secured to the ends of the tube 6 in longitudinal alignment therewith in any suitable manner, as at 8.
It will thus be seen that a hypodermic needle has been provided which embodies relatively hard, durable end portions, the construction and arrangement being such as to materially prolong the useful life of the needle. In use, the intake end portion of the needle is inserted in the usual manner in the discharge or outlet end portion of a conventional syringe 9, the collar 6 abutting said syringe. The closure or slip nut 10 is engaged with the collar 6 and mounted on the syringe 9 for securing the needle in position in an obvious manner.
It is believed that the many advantages of an improved hypodermic needle constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A hypodermic needle of the character described comprising a tube including a metallic intermediate portion, and pointed end portions of tungsten carbide fixed longitudinally on the ends of said intermediate portion.
2. An improved hypodermic needle of the character described comprising: a tube including a steel intermediate portion, a collar fixed on one end portion of said steel intermediate portion, and pointed end portions of tungsten carbide fixed longitudinally on the ends of said steel intermediate portion.
