APPARATUS FOR SUPERH EATING STEAM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,571, dated April 10, 1883.

Be it known that .I, LOUIS BLOCK, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new, and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Superheating Steam, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved apparatus for superheating steam, either by means of a separate furnace or by utilizing the heat of the gases of combustion on their way from the furnace to the chimney; and the invention consists of a series of steampipes, which are inclosed by exterior sectional shells, having interior annular ribs, by which contact with the interior steam-pipes is formed. The exterior shells are made of two or more flanged sections of cast-iron, which are secured together. The steam-pipes are preferably made of U shape, and their ends expanded into upright manifolds. The steam -supply pipe is connected to one manifold, and the steam-exit pipe with the other manifold. A three-way valve in the steam-supply pipe is connected by a direct pipe with the steamexit pipe, and by an intermediate lever mechanism with an automatic regulator in the exitpipe, so that when the maximum temperature is reached the valve is turned and a part of the saturated steam allowed to pass directly into the exit-pipe, whereby the temperature is reduced and the valve reset into normal position. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a boiler with my improved apparatus for superheating steam. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same partly in horizontal section. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on an enlarged scale through one of the manifolds of the apparatus, and Figs. 4., 5, and 6 are detail sections of the automatic regulator and the three-way valve.

By reference to the drawings, A represents my improved apparatus for superheating steam, which apparatus is arranged either below the steam-boiler back of the fire-bridge, so as to be exposed to the heat of the firegases passing from the fire-bridge to the chimney, or the apparatus may be arranged in con- (No model.)
nection with a separate furnace, and exposed to the direct heat of the fire.
The apparatus A-consists of a series of U- shaped steam-pipes, a, which are expanded at their ends into the rear walls of upright manifolds B B, of which one is connected by a steam-pipe, O, to the dome of the steam-boiler, so as to supply saturated steam to the superheating apparatus A. From the second inanifold, B, the steam is conducted off through an exit-pipe, G which is connected by a direct pipe, 0, with the steam-supply pipe 0 above the manifold B.
At thejunction of the pipes O and (J is arranged a three-way valve,D, the stem of which is connected by an intermediate lever mechanism, D, with an automatic regulator, E, arranged in the exit-pipe 0 as shown in Fig. 1. As the three-way valve D is also directly connected with the exit-pipe G, saturated steam may he admitted directly with the superheated steam, so as to reduce the temperature. The automatic-regulator E and the intermediate lever mechanism, D, may thus be adjusted in such a manner that when a certain maximum temperature is reached steam is thrown directly into the exit-pipe 0 but that the threeway valve D is returned into its normal position when the temperature falls below the re quired maximum temperature. The steam is then compelled again to pass through the superheating apparatus A.
The U-shaped horizontally-arranged steampipes at are not exposed directly to the gases of combustion, but are inclosed by exterior pipes or shells, b, which are preferably formed of two semi-sections of cast-iron or of more than two sections, if desired. In place of cast-iron, clay or any other refractory material may also be used for the exterior shells, b. The shells b are provided at their inside with annular ribs 1), which encircle the steam-pipes andform contact therewith, so as to convey sufficient heat from the shells to the steam-pipes to insure the required high temperature for superheating the steam, while preventing the steam-pipe from becoming red hot, so as to decompose the steam. Themanifolds B B may be provided at their faces with detachable caps d in line with the steam-pipes a. The caps are attached by screw-bolts, so that when they are removed admission is given to the ends of the steampipes for expanding them into the rear walls of the manifolds. I
The automatic regulator E is constructed of a mercury-cylinder, in which the expansion of the mercury forces the piston in upward direction, and by means of the connecting-lever mechanism D turns the three-way valve 0 either into position to establish the direct supply of the boiler with the superheating apparatus or throw a part of the steam from the supply-steam pipe directly into the conductingot't'pipe E, as before described. The automatic regulator and the three-way valve may be of any approved construction.
Havingthus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Paten t- 1. An apparatus for superheating steam, consisting of exterior manifolds, B B, and of a series of U-shaped steam-pipes, a (1, extending from the manifolds to the interior of the furnace, and being inclosed by exterior pipes or shells b I), substantially as set forth.
2. In an apparatus for superheating' steam, the combination of the system ofsuperheating steam-pipes, a steam-supply pipe, anexit-pipe for conducting off the superheated steam, a
three-way valve iutermediately between the supply-pipe and the superheating system of pipes, a direct connecting-pipe between the three-way valve and the steam-exit pipe, a
heat-regulator within the latter, and a lever mechanism connecting the regulator with the three-way valve for automatically regulating the same, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In an apparatus for superheating steam, the combination of a series of interior steampipes inclosed by exterior sectional shells, manifolds connected to the steam supply and exit pipes, a three-way valve in the steam-supply pipe, a regulator in the steam-exit pipe, a direct steam-pipe between the three-way valve and exit-pipe, and a connecting-lever mechanism between regulator and three-way valve, substantially as and for the purpose described.
