Application February 9, 1955, Serial No. 487,943
3 Claims. (Cl. 2449) This invention relates to devices for fastening the lower portion of a four-in-hand necktie to the shirt of the wearer, and more particularly to structural improvements in a necktie holder described and illustrated in United States Patent No. 2,150,351. According to the present invention, a clasp or holder is provided which is fully as etfective as the one described in the patent but which is considerably simpler and easier to make as will be apparent from the following description of an embodiment of the invention illustrated on the drawing, of which Figure l is an exploded perspective view of the device embodying the invention;
Figures 2 and 3 are sections on the lines 2-2 and 33 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a plan view, on a larger scale, of the assembled device;
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Figure 4; and
Figure 6 is a section on the line 66 of Figure 5.
The device shown on the drawing comprises a rod 10 having a length about equal to the width of the rear part of a tied four-in-hand necktie, say, 2 inches. At each end of the rod It is secured a knob 12 which may be any convenient shape such as the cylinders shown on the drawing. Each knob 12 has a recess therein which is of stepped cylindrical shape with three portions 14, 16 and 18 of successively smaller diameters. The smallest portion 18 may be screw-threaded for engagement with a threaded end portion 24 of the rod 10.
Secured to n e rod it) are two spurs 22 each of which may conveniently be a sharply pointed end portion of a coil 24 of spring wire surrounding part of the rod 19. The other end portion of each coil is secured by solder or otherwise in the middle sized part 16 of the recess in one of the knobs 32. The turns of each coil adjacent to the spur ends 22 are spaced from the surface of the rod 10 2,755,529 iatented July 24, 1956 so that when the rod is rotated while the front part of a tied necktie is pressed against it, the spurs 22 will move in circular paths into the adjacent part of the necktie and then out of the tie at other points to anchor the front part of the tie to the rod 10.
Associated with the rod It? is a clamp consisting of a substantially rigid strip 26 of metal or other suitable material from the central portion of which an elongated tongue 28 is struck up extending longitudinally with respect to the strip so as to clamp the rear portion of a tied necktie between itself and the strip.
The ends 30 of the strip are of reduced width and are bent to betransversely arcuate so as to fit loosely in the clearance between the coil 24 and the wall of the portion 14 of the recess in one of the knobs 12. This arrangement permits ready relative rotation between the rod it) and the clamp 26.
In using the device, the rear part of the necktie is clamped to the shirt by the clamp 26. The front part of the tie is then pressed against the rod 10 which is rotated by manipulation of one of the knobs 12 until the spurs 22 catch on the front part of the tie and hold it until it is later released by rotation of the rod in the reverse direction.
I claim:
1. A necktie clasp comprising two knobs each having a recess therein, a rod each end of which extends into the center of the recess in one of said knobs and is secured in the knob, an elongated strip having end portions loosely disposed in said recesses for relative rotation of said rod and strip, means on said strip for clamping said device on a part of a necktie, and arcuate spurs secured to said rod and extending in arcs substantially concentric with the axis of the rod, said spurs each having a pointed end movable to enter a part of a necktie when the rod is rotated.
2. A necktie clasp as in claim 1, the clamping means on said strip being a longitudinally extending tongue struck up therefrom to grip a necktie inserted between it and the other portion of the strip.
3. A necktie clasp as in claim 1, said strip having end portions bent to a transverseiy arcuate shape whereby to fit in the clearances between said rod and the walls of said recesses.
