Description

Patented Mar. 14, 1939 UNITED "ST T PATENT OFFICE 9 Claims.
This invention" relates to a necktie holder,' and has for its primary object 'toiprovide a device of novel construction which may be utilized to position the end portions of a four-in-hand necktie in'correct'relation oneto the other and to the front of a shirt. 0 a
Anbther object of the invention is to provide a device which will effectively hold a necktie po sitioned with respect to a shirt and at the same time will be entirely obscured behind the necktie.
Another objectof the invention is to provide a device which will grip the necktie at the rear thereof and adjacent to the opposite edges thereof, and which upon being operated to grip the necktie will also function to stretch the tie laty;
Still another object of the invention is to provide-a holding devicefor a necktie which will not mar or wrinkle the front surface of the tie .or otherwise detract from the appearance thereof. a
The invention consists in a necktie holder as set forth in the following specification and particularly as pointed outin the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawing: a a
Fig. l is a front elevat'onof portions of a shirt and four-infhand necktie, illustrating in dotted lines a necktie holder embodying my invention positioned behind the front portion of the necktie.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the necktie holder as taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. '1.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the necktie holder also illustrated upon an enlarged scale. 4
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detailtransverse section taken on the line l-4of Fig. 3, looking in the direction o f-the arrows on said line.
Fig. 5 is a front elevationillustrating a modified embodiment of the invention. 7 n
Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail transverse section taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5 looking in the direction of the arrows; on said line. a
Fig. '7 is a front elevation illustrating another modified embodiment of theinvention.
Likenumerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawing. p
Inthe drawing, referring particularly to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, Ill represents a portion of the front of a s-hirt and H represents a portion of a V four-in-hand necktie which, as'made up and in use, 'has front and rearportions l2 and I3 respectively embodied therein. The portions I2 and I3 of the necktie normally hang loosely with the front or wide portion l2 obscuring the rear or narrow portion I3, but both of these portions may bewme a ny disarrang ed with respect to e'ach th nd o the r n o t s t H1, in which.
condition they present an untidy appearance. The holder of thisinvention is provided for the purpose of securingthe portions I2 and I3 of the necktie in correct relation one v the front of the shirt ll]. The holder comprises ceive the portion l3 of the necktie I! together with a front edgeportion l 5 0 f theshirt I0. thereby securing said Itie andshirt portions l3 andl5 respectively one to the other, and. a rotatable fastening device l6 which is secured to the clamp me bers 1 and en a es thefrpnt o on ii of h n kt eei. t anther of in a ma er s:

the portion 13 of the necktie to the portion 15 of v the shirt lfl saidportions l3 andl5 are inserted inthe spacebetween the portions H and IQ of theclamp l4, and the portions [9 of said clamp will exert a yielding pressure upon' the tie and shirtand hold the same secured one to another.
The fastening device I 6 is rotatably mounted in.
bearings 2!] fast to the portions ll of the clamp memberld and'embodies therein a rod 2| provided with knurled operatingknobs 22 at each endthereof, Secured to the rod 2! at suitable locations thereon, preferably adjacent to the knobs 22, are helical fastener members 23 and v 24 formed of wire and wound loosely right and left hand respectively around the rod 2 I, with the coils thereof spaced apart one from another and from the rod 21. fastener members 23 and 24' are secured to the rod 2l in any-suitable manner as by fusing or soldering, and the innermost coils of said members 231and 24terminate in pointed portions or spurs 25 and 26-respectively whichare positioned eccentric to the axis of the rod 2| in a manner to.
penetrate the fabric of the. front portion l2 of the necktie l I. when the rod 2| is rotated in the direc- The outermost coils ofthe j tion of the arrow Figlql. The portion [2 of the necktie-ispressed lightly against theispurs during the rotation of n the rod 2|. The fastener members 23 and 24 are positioned to engage the rear side of the'portion l2 of the necktie at points adjacent to the opposite edges thereof, and in rotating said members, after the spurs 25 and 26 have penetrated the tie and obtained a hold upon said opposite edge portions, a continued rotation of the rod 2| will produce a slight lateral stretching action upon the tie, thereby tending to eliminate wrinkles therefrom. The spurs 25 and 26 in penetrating the necktie will only interlock with a few threads of portions 21 of the tie which are folded behind the front face of said tie, and the stretching action upon the tie is produced by the right and left hand helical coils of the'fastener members 23 and 24. r
In Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawing I have illustrated a modified embodiment of my invention in which a clamp member 28 is constructed of sheet metal and has a fastening device 29 mount ed thereon and rotatable in bearings 30 provided upon the clamp member 28. The fastening device 29 embodies therein a rod 3| provided with knurled operating knobs 32 at opposite ends thereof, and fast to said rod 3| at points adJa-. cent to the operating knobs are fastenermembers 33 constructed of wire extending partly around the rod a slight distance therefrom and constituting spurs 34 which are formed eccentric to the axis of the rod 3| in a manner to easily penetrate the necktie when the fastening device is rotated. The device illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 is actuated in exactly the same manner to secure a necktie as the device previously described, but there will be no action tending to stretch the tie laterally, and the fastening device can only be rotated approximately one half a turn.
In Fig. 7 still another modified embodiment of the invention is illustrated in which a clamp member 35 constructed of wire has separate and independently operated fastening devices 36 and 31 mounted thereon. The devices 36 and 31 embody therein rods 38 rotatably mounted in bear- .ings 39 fast to the clamp member 35 and are provided with knurled operating knobs 4D. The devices 36 and 31 are also provided withfastener members 4| and 42 respectively formed of wire and wound loosely right and left hand respectively around the rods 38 adjacent to the knobs 40. The fastener members 4| and 42 are constructed in exactly'the same manner as the memers 23 and 24 previously described and function in exactly the same manner to hold a necktie, and the only difference between the operation of the device of Fig. '7 and the device of Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive is that the fastener devices 36 and 3! are actuated separately whereas the devices 23 and 24 are actuated in unison.
