Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD MAYNARD, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED TASSEL FOR WINDOW-CURTAINS, 80C.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 27,554, dated March 20, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD MAYNARD, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Tassel-Molds; and I do hereby declare that the tollowingis a full, clear, and exact description of the nature and object of my said invention.
In the manufacture of tassels for windowshades, curtains, pictures, dress trimmings, &c., it has been usual heretofore to cover the same with silk wound onto the wooden mold to cover the same. To effect this considerable silk is required, which makes the tassels costly, and not only so, but the varieties of shapes into which the molds are turned render it ditfioult to make the covering set closely thereto, and in use this covering soon becomes separated and the mold shows between the silk fibers.
The nature of my said invention consists in a new mode of covering tassel-molds, whereby I produce a new and useful article of manu facture that is not only much cheaper, but far more durable and handsome, than thesilk-covcred molds, and one in which the turning or carving of the mold is rendered entirely visible, and that regardless of the variety in size, shape, or configuration given to such mold.
To effect the covering of said tassel-molds I coat the same with any desired character of glue or cement. I however prefer to use paint or other water-proof material of a color corresponding with the coating for such mold, and I apply thereto flock, which, adhering, produces acoveringof great durability and beauty. This article, known in commerce as flock, is formed from wool, silk, or similar material reduced to very fine particles or short fibers by suitable cutting or grinding mechanism.
The flock used for covering my tassel-molds may be of any suitable fibrous substance or a mixture of two or more, and may be of any color or mixture of colors that is desired.
Silk or woolen cords may be wound into the creases of the molds, and the fringe may be of the same material.
Haviug'thus described my said invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as a new article of manufacture, is-
The tassel mold covered in the manner specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my Witnesses:
