UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
SHYE FINKELSTEIN, OF NElV YORK, N. Y.
TRIMMING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,876, dated November 18, 1890.
Application filed August 20,1890. Serial No. 362,472. (No specimens.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SHYE FINKELSTEIN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flat-Faced Trimming-Fabrics; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the manufacture of silk-faced trimming material, and has for its object to produce fine flat-faced silkcovered strips which, while perfectly pliable, so as to be readily bent into any desired forms, shall nevertheless be sufficiently firm and tough as not to crack or break in bending.
It consists in the new article of manufacture obtained by the combination, with a body of parchment, of an outer covering of fine silken thread wound thereon, substantiatly as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a strip of parchment partly covered by a silk thread wound closely over it, and Fig. 2 illustrates an ornament for use as a trimming made by bending into the desired form my improved silk-faced parchment strips.
Heretofore it has been deemed impracticable to obtain a fiat-faced trimming covered with a wrapping of silk thread which will admit of being shaped into ornamental forms without so separating (more or less) the covering-threads at the angles or short bends made with the trimming, and thereby expose the inclosed body or foundation piece and marring the beauty of the work. I have by my invention avoided this difficulty, and have produced a tough, pliable, silk covered, flat faced trimming -fabric, which will admit of being bent and worked up into any desirable forms without breaking the continuity of the silk facing or marring its finished appearance.
In the drawings, A, Fig. 1, represents the body or foundation for my improved fabric, the same consisting of a comparatively narrow extended flat strip of parchment or parchment-paper, which, although readily pliable, is nevertheless so firm and elastic as to retain the shape into which it may be bent and to resist moderate pressure withcovered strip is bent at a sharp angle or twisted with a short turn. Hence this improved flat silk-faced trimmingfabric 0 admits of being readily fashioned into a great variety of ornamental designs, which will present throughout a uniform unbroken surface of great beauty. One of these designs is illustrated in Fig. 2, which represents a rosette made up of myimproved flat silk-faced parchment strip 0, to be used upon the runner of a necktie, or as a trimming upon garments.
I am aware that it is not new to produce floral designs upon textile fabrics by means of strips of tape impregnated with gum to impart thereto the necessary stiffness and covered with threads wound evenly thereon, as is described in Patent No. 153,97 6, of August 11,1874; but a silk-covered trimming thus made of a tape stiffened with gum does not admit of being bent, folded, and twisted to form independent ornamental pieces and curved forms which shall be selfsupporting without breaking and marring the fine silk covering spun thereon. The object of my invention is to produce a fabric which will admit of being bent and shaped into any desirable form without breaking its silken covering, and which, while perfectly pliable, shall be stiff enough to be self-supporting.
I claim as my invention- A trimming comprising a flat thin strip of parchment of extended length, having a covering of silk thread closely wound thereon, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SHYE FINKELSTEIN.
