SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,495, dated April 10, 1883.
Application filed December 30, 188:2, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VAN O. JEFFRIES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Goshocton, in the county of Coshocton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Oombiued Fifth-Wheel and King-Bolt, of which the following is a specification reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to the running-gear.
of vehicles; and its object is the construction of a combined fifth-wheel and king-bolt, which shall be simple, inexpensive, and able to withstand any strain to which it may be subjected without breaking down, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of as "much of the runninggear of a vehicle as is necessary to illus= trate my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken through the front axle. Fig.3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a bottom view, illustrating a modification.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, A represents the front axle; B, the axle-tree; and ,G is a circular plate or disk, provided at both its sides with laterally extending lugs D D, to enable the said plate to be secured to the front axle by means of clips E. The plate 0 has a centrally-located stem, F, projecting upwardly and downwardly, as shown, and forming the king-bolt. The axletree is provided, just under the center of the plate 0, with a recess, G, to receive a clipplate, H, which is pivoted upon the stem or king-bolt F. I
I represents the perch, and J the head-block, under which a circular disk or plate, K, is secured by means of screws or bolts. The disk K is fitted over the lower disk, 0, and is provided with an annular, flange, L, overhanging the latter, so as to keep out dust and sand.
Disk K is also provided with a central recess or perforation, M, to receive the upper end of the stem or king-bolt F, upon which the said disk rotates. The disk K is also provided with a rearwardly-extending stem, N, bolted to the perch, and a forwardly-extending lug, O, and bolts P P, passing through the stem N and lug O and through the ends of the clip-plate H, serve to secure the parts together. The disk K has an oiling-hole, P, and thelowerdisk, O, has a couple of longitudinal recesses, Q Q, to receive and hold a quantity of oil.
The operation and advantages of this invention are obvious, and need no description here. A slight modification in construction may, however, be necessary when the front spring is secured upon the head-block by means of clips. This modification simply consists in providing the lower plate, 0, with segmental slots S S to receive the clip-plates and nuts and to admit of a sufficient rotary motion.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As an improvement in fifth-wheels, the combination of the disk 0, having laterally-projecting lugs D, clipped to the fronta-xle and provided with a central vertical stem, F, projecting upwardly and downwardly, as shown, the clip-bar H, journaled upon the lower end of the stem F, above the front axle,'which has a recess, Gr, to receive said bar, the disk K, secured under the head-block, journaled upon the upper end of stem F and having flange L, overhanging the disk 0, stem N, and lug O, and bolts connecting the said stem and lug with the clip-bar t1, substantially as set forth.
