GILBERT A. PERRINE, OF FREMONT, OHIO.
FIFTH-WHEEL FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,514, dated May 9, 18812. Application filed September 19, 1881. N model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, GILBERT A. PERRINE, of Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Fifth-Wheel and Running- Gear for Vehicles, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an isometric view of the gearing. Fig. 2 is acentral vertical longitudinal view of the front part of same, and Fig. 3 is an isometric view of the under side of the gearing.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved form of fifth-wheel for vehicles and the accompanying gearing,
In the drawings, A represents an iron reach, having a forked rear end secured to the under side of the rear axle in any desired manner, and provided near the front end with aperforation, 0, through which the pivot-pin or kingbolt t." of the fifth-wheel is designed to pass. At the extreme front end of the reach A is another perforation, D, toreceive astay-bol t, J,
is of even size with the circle hl below, but
solid, and rests thereon, as shown. A bolt, J, passing down from the solid circle G within the circle M to the reach below, serves to keep this down snugly to the circle M and plate L.
On the rear side of the plate G is the circle F, having at its rear side the cxtensionpiece E, which is bolted to the reach A. The lower plate has a socket around the king belt or pin 0, to receive a pivot-lug projecting down from the plateG; or, if preferred, the socket maybe formed in the plate G and the lug on the plate L, as may be deemed most desirable. Suitable clips, I, hold the head-block and spring to the guard-plate G, as shown. It will thus be seen that there is afull circle on top, with the front of the top circle solid. The back of the top circle is open, having an iron extension-piece on top of the wood reach forged solid to the under part of the circle behind. The top circle has square flanges and lips or on each side to bolt it to the head-block. The bottom part is a half-circle, with solid center and square h flanges and lips bon each side, as above, to fasten it to the axle-bed, allowing a bolt, J, to pass down within the lower circle from the sol id circle above to the reach-iron below, where it is fastened by means of two nuts, one on each side of the reaclriron, thus permitting the lower half-circle to turn on its center.
0 0 represent the brace-irons running from the reach to the rear axle, A.
[Iavingdescribed my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The fifth-wheel of a wagon in which the upper halt'is composed of a full circle, solid in front of the head-block and open behind, se-
cured to the head-block, provided on the rear side with an extension-piece forged thereto and secured to the reach, in combination with the lower half composed of an open half-circle secured to the axle-bed, the two halves constituting the fifthwheel being held together by means of the bolt secured to the uppen half and to the end of the reach below, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
GILBERT. A. PEREINE.
