4 Claims. (Cl. 189-75) The object of this invention is to devise a novel replaceable window sill which can be used to replace a window sill which has rotted out. The sill is preferably made of aluminum or other non-oxidizable sheet material, and is provided with novel means for adjusting its position and for locking it in place.
Further objects of the invention are to devise a window sill which can be installed by unskilled labor with only the use of a screw driver; to devise novel means for adjusting the heighth and inclination of the window sill, and novel mechanism for securing the sill in its proper position.
With the foregoing and other objects in view as will hereinafter clearly appear, my invention comprehends a novel replaceable window sill having novel means for aligning it and for locking it in position.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings a preferred embodiment of it which, in practice, will give satisfactory and reliable results. It is, however, to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and the invention is not limited, except by the scope of the appended claims, to the exact arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein set forth.
Figure l is a front elevation of a portion of a window with a sill embodying the invention assembled therewith.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the window sill in place, with the locking means expanded into locking positions, and with the construction at the sides of the window in section.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a front elevation, partly broken away to show the locking mechanism.

Referring to the drawings:
The window sill is formed from sheet material to provide a top portion 1 with a depending front flange 2.
Extruded chanels 3 are fixed to the bottom of the top portion in any desired manner and are provided with a wide base flange 4 at their iner sides which terminate in ofi-set portions 5 serving as guides for locking members 6. These locking members 6 are in the form flat strips slidable between the top portion 1 and the off-set portions 5, and these strips at their outer ends are cut away to form triangular locking members 7. The locking strips are provided with longitudinally spaced holes 8 to cooperate with a gear 9 fixed on a shaft 10. The head end 2,752,016 Patented .lune 26, 1956 of the shaft is rotatable in a slide 11 slidable in a channel 3 and the opposite end of a shaft extends to an aperture 12 in the front flange 2 and is provided with a slot 13 to receive a screw driver. The slides 11 are fixed in the positions to which they have been adjusted in any desired manner, for example by spot welding or pinning to a wall of a channel.
In order to provide the desired inclination of the top portion of the window sill, I provide in the channels jacks 14 having screws 15, the heads of which contact the bricks or construction beneath the sill, and the opposite ends extend to apertures 16 in the top portion of the sill and are slotted as at 17 to receive a screw driver.
The front flange may have extensions 18 which are bent inwardly as shown by the arrows Figure 2 to close the space between the wall construction and the front flange of the sides to prevent the entrance of rain, snow or foreign material.
The jacks may be fixed in their proper positions in any desired manner, for example by indenting the channels in proximity to the jacks.
Assuming now that a window sill is to be replaced and the old window sill has been removed, the replaceable sill is moved into proper position and the shafts 10 turned with a screw driver to force the locking portions 7 into the wall construction and preferably between bricks. The jacks 14 are adjusted by their screws 15 to provide the desired pitch for the top portion of the sill. The end flanges 18 are bent around to close the space between the front flange and the wall construction at opposite sides of the front flange.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A replaceable window sill, comprising a sheet of material having a top portion and a depending front flange, spaced channels fixed to the bottom of said top portion, locking members slidable between said channels and top portion, means to move the locking members outwardly into locking position, and jacks carried by and depending from said top portion to raise the top portion into assembled position.
2. A replaceable window sill, comprising a sheet of material having a top portion and 2. depending front flange, spaced channels fixed to the bottom of said top portion, locking members guided between said channels and each having a longitudinally extending row of apertures, gears cooperating with said apertures to move the locking members into locking position, shafts on which the gears are fixed, the shafts being mounted in said channels and extending towards said front flange, and said flange having openings through which a turning tool can be inserted to turn said shafts.
3. The construction defined in claim 2, wherein jacks provided with screws are fixed in the channels, and the top portion has openings to receive a turning tool to turn the screws of the jacks.
4. The construction defined in claim 2, wherein the channels have offset base flanges between which and the top portion the locking members are slidably mounted.
