TOGGLE MECHANISM FOR JAW-TYPE CRUSHER 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 Filed Aug. 3, 1953 III/ 'IIIIIIIIIIII J3 III/ W vvv ma w rill/111i! 2,751,159 TOGGLE WCHANISM FGR JAW-TYPE CRUSHER Samuel W. Traylor, in, Allentown, Pa. Application August 3, 1953, Serial No. 371,992 9 Claims. (Cl. 241269) The present invention relates to jaw-type crushers and more particularly to a novel toggle mechanism for crushers of this type.
In jaw-type crushers a swing jaw is mounted for swinging movement to and from a fixed jaw. There are two major constructions for eifecting the swinging movement of the jaw. In the first construction, the so-called Blake jaw crusher, the swing jaw is pivotally mounted on a fixed shaft, and the swinging movement is eifected by a toggle mechanism having two flat toggle plates in endwise compression between a vertically reciprocating pitman, and the swing jaw and the frame respectively. in the other construction, the so-called eccentric-in-jaw crusher, the swing jaw depends from a driven eccentric shaft, and horizontal movement is imparted to the lower end of the swing jaw by a fiat toggle plate held in endwise compression between the frame and the swing jaw.
In each construction, the conventional toggle mechanism is subject to substantial compressive forces. in addisarily must be made excessively strong and heavy to avoid the adverse effects of uneven loading.
With the foregoing in mind, a primary object of the present invention is to provide a novel toggle mechanism for a jaw-type crusher which minimizes the torsional or twisting stresses in the mechanism.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a toggle mechanism which is self-adjusting to balance out uneven loads on the jaw, and enable the parts to be made substantially smaller and lighter than in conventional apparatus.
These and other objects of the invention and the various features and details of the construction and operation to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. l is a plan view of a Blake-type jaw crusher, made in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view partially in section of the crusher illustrated in Fig. l
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 33 of Pig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view showing the arrangement of the novel toggle mechanism made in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of an eccentric-in-jawtype crusher made in accordance with the present invention; and,
Z,75l,l9 Patented June 19, 1956 Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 66 of Fig. 5.
The present invention provides a novel toggle mecham operate to balance out the effects of an uneven load on the swing jaw of the crusher.
Referring now to the drawings, Figs. 1 to 4 thereof illustrate the invention as applied to a Blake type of In accordance with the present invention, the toggle mechanism 14 comprises against the lower surface of the pitman 15 by a springloaded bolt 21. A plurality of struts or toggle members, in the present instance four, 22, 23, 24, and 25 are engaged against the distributor and held against lateral displacement therein by replaceable Wear socket members 26.
in accordance with the invention, the distributor 2G is not rigidly fixed to the pitman 25 but is capable of slight Thus, the distributor is free to automatically align itself to balance out uneven loads on a swing jaw 12.
the forces, there wlll be relatively no twisting action on the jaw 12 so that any tendency of the members 12 and 28 to twist 3 em but may be utilized in eccentric-in-jaw-type crushers such as, for example, illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6. In this type of construction, the toggle plate which is in endwise compression between the frame and the jaw, is replaced by a toggle mechanism somewhat similar to the mechanism described above in connection with Figs. 1 to 4. As seen in Fig. 5, the swing jaw 41 is mounted on a driven eccentric shaft 42 for swinging movement toward and from a fixed jaw 43 fixed on the frame 44 of the apparatus. The toggle mechanism, indicated genorally at 45, is disposed between the lower end of the swing jaw and toggle blocks 46, 46. The toggle blocks are mounted for fore and aft adjustment by means of wedge mmebers 47, 47 which are adjusted laterally by adjusting screws 48, 48. A spring-loaded tension rod 49 is provided to bias the swing jaw 41 rearwardly in the apparatus.
In accordance with the invention, the toggle mecha- :nism 45 comprises a distributor 51 and a plurality of toggle members 52, 53, 54, and 55. Replaceable wear rsocket members 55 are provided in the distributor 51, the swing jaw 41 and the toggle block 46 to receive the toggle members 52 to 55 inclusive. Under the bias of the spring-loaded tension rod 49, the distributor 51 is Forged upwardly against a depending plate 58 rigidly secured to the framework as indicated at 59. The lower surface of the plate 58 and the upper surface of the distributor 51 are smooth for sliding engagement, permitting limited rotational movement of the distributor upon the application of an uneven load against the swing jaw 41. It is apparent that the toggle mechanism 45 functions identically to the toggle mechanism 14 to counterbalance the forces created by an uneven load against the swing jaw 41.
While particular embodiments of the invention have been herein illustrated and described, it is not intended to limit the invention to such disclosures, and changes and modifications may be made therein and thereto within the scope of the following claims.
