Description

June 12, 1956 s. WOLF 2,749,918
CIGARETTE HOLDERS Filed June 14. 1955 INVENTOR S/DNEY WOLF J-5 3 ATTORNEY CIGARETTE HOLDERS Sidney Wolf, Passaic, N. J.
Application June 14, 1955, Serial No. 515,430
3 Claims. (Cl. 131257) My invention relates to the art of smoking and more particularly to a cigarette holder.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a cigarette holder which is so constructed and arranged whereby the same may be readily attached to the hand of a smoker for supporting the cigarette in proximity to the fingers thereby permitting free use of the fingers for other purposes, for instance, the operation of a motor vehicle.
Another object of my invention is to provide a cigarette holder of the foregoing described character which functions to hold a cigarette on the hand of a smoker in a preestablished position to facilitate smoking of the cigarette without shifting of the holder relative to the fingers.
A further object of my invention is to provide a cigarette holder of the foregoing described character which lends itself to the smoking of a cigarette with a minimum amount of danger during the operation of a motor vehicle or the like.
An important object of my invention is to provide a cigarette holder of the foregoing described character which is simple in construction, durable in use, efiicient in operation and economical in manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view, as will hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings from which the several features of the invention and the advantages attained thereby will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
Referring to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention attached to the hand of a smoker.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of my invention and illustrating the clip in position for holding a cigarette during smoking.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but illustrating the clip disposed in position for convenient storage.
Figure 4 is a detailed sectional view taken substantially on the line 4--4 of Figure 2.
As illustrated in the drawing, my novel form of cigarette holder comprises a member constructed of a single piece of wire bent between its ends and intermediate its length to form a resilient somewhat U-shaped clamp 5 adapted to be secured transversely of the hand of a smoker inwardly of the fingers. The clamp 5 is fashioned with upper and lower arms 6 and 7, respectively, each having a pair of strands of the wire and with the arm 6 engaging the outer surface of the hand inwardly of the knuckles and the arm 7 transversing and engaging the palm. The arms 6 and 7 are connected together by an arcuate portion 8 which embraces the side of the hand inwardly and adjacent the index finger.
To facilitate application of the clamp to the hand and prevent injury thereto, the free ends of the strands of the arm 6 terminate in eyes 9 while the coincident ends of the strands of the arm 7 are fastened together United States Patent with a loop 10' as clearly' illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing. The strands of the wire of the respective arms are secured together in clamped relation by wire loops or members 11 while the arm 6, between its member .11 and the portion 8, has fixed thereon a pair of spacers or stops 12 to limit lengthwise movement of a cigarette clip 13 disposed on the arm 6 between the members 12.
'The clip 13 is constructed of a resilient material and substantially U-shaped and comprises a pair of curved fingers '14 which are joined together at one end 'by an elongated looped section 15 through which the wire strands of the arm 6 extend and with the section 15 'ser-v- 'ing to clamp the clip to the arm 6. The ends of the lingers 14, adjacent the section 15, are'normally disposed in engagement with each other but are capable of being spread or separated upon rotation of the clip relative to the arm 6 whereby to dispose the clip within the confines of the clamp for convenient storage or vice-versa, it being understood that the resilient material also permits sufiicient spreading of the fingers 14 to receive and clamp therebetween a cigarette C. When the clip 13 is thus mounted on the arm 6 it may be adjusted to a desirable position between the stops 12 to suit the convenience of the smoker.
In use, the clip 13 is disposed on the arm 6 in the position illustrated in Figure 2 and the clamp secured to the hand in the manner shown in Figure 1. When the parts are thus positioned, a cigarette is disposed within the clip 13 thereby enabling the smoker to have ready access to the cigarette at all times by merely raising the hand in proximity to the lips, it being noted that the clip disposes the axis of the cigarette in substantial parallelism with the longitudinality of the clamp with the burning end of the cigarette being distal with relation to the index finger thus permitting ready access to the drawing end of the cigarette thus enabling the cigarette to be smoked and enjoyed without all the dangers usually attendant to smoking while driving.
Without further elaboration, the foregoing will so fully explain the invention that others may, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of service. Moreover, it is not indispensable that all the features of the invention be used conjointly since they may be employed advantageously in various combinations and subcombinations.
It is obvious that the invention is not confined solely to the use herein disclosed in connection therewith as it may be utilized for any purpose to which it is adaptable. It is therefore to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction as illustrated and described, as the same is only illustrative of the principles involved which are capable of extended application in various forms, and the invention comprehends all construction within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a cigarette holder, a substantially elongated U- shaped hand clamp having an open end and adapted to transversely embrace the hand of a smoker, said clamp being formed with a pair of outer and inner spaced lengthwise extending elongated and substantially coincidently curved arms adapted to engage and transversely overlie and underlie the outside and inside of the hand, respectively, inwardly of the fingers of the hand, and a relatively short arcuate end portion connecting coincident ends of the arms together for embracing the side of the hand inwardly of the adjacent finger, and a substantially U-shaped cigarette clip mounted on said outer arm and having a pair of cigarette holding fingers so arranged relative to said clamp to dispose the cigarette in substantially lengthwise relation with the longitudinality of said clamp.
2. In a cigarette holder, a substantially elongated U- shaped hand clamp adapted to embrace the hand of a smoker transversely and inwardly of the fingers of the hand and formed with a pair of connected hand-engaging arms, and a substantially U-shaped cigarette clip mounted on one of said arms and having a pair of cigarette holding fingers so arranged relative to said clamp to dispose the cigarette in substantially lengthwise relation With the longitudinality of said clamp, said clip being normally disposed outwardly of said one arm for the smoking of said cigarette and rotatable on said one arm to position said clip, within the confines of said clamp for storage.
3.'In a cigarette holder, a substantially elongated U-' shaped handclamp adapted to embrace the hand of a smoker transversely and inwardly of the fingers of the hand and formed with a pair of connected hand-engaging arms each constructed with strands of wire in side-by-side relation, and a substantially U-shaped resilient cigarette clip having a pair of cigarette holding fingers connected together at one end with an elongated loop section receiving the strands of one of said arms for mounting said clip on said one arm, said clip being normally disposed outwardly of said clamp, for the smoking of said cigarette, and with said loop section being rotatable on said one arm to position said clip within the confines of said clamp for storage, said fingers being arranged in a manner relative to said arms to dispose the cigarette in substantially length- Wise relation with that of said arms.
