SPOON AND SUGAR-TONGS COMBINED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,695, dated March 27, 1883.
Application filed December 1, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN BADGER, a citizen of Great Britain, residing at New York, in the county-0f New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spoons and Sugar Tongs Combined, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
.The object of this invention is to combine in the one and the same implement a spoon and sugar-tongs, thereby producing an article of table-ware adapted to the purpose of serving either granulated sugar or lump sugar. This purpose I have accomplished by the construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings,in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, showing the jaws composing the tongs pressed together ready for use.

The letters A A designate two strips of sheet metal or other suitable material of unequal length, having one end of the shorter piece, A, riveted or otherwise fastened to the longer piece, A, about one-third of its length from the end A where said longer piece is provided with abowl to form the spoon. Both the strips AA are bent at the end opposite to the bowl A to form jaws B B, and the inner V or opposed edges of said jaws are slotted,
notched, or recessed at their points of intersection, as at b b, the ends of the jaws being preferably made concave. Between the shanks of the strips A Ais placed a piece of metal or other suitable material,E, through which and the side strips, A A, a rivet, screw,
or bolt, e, passes to hold the parts together. The piece of metal E is so placed between the strips A A partly for the purpose of causing the jaws B B to spring together when the shanks of the strips are relieved from pressure, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, and thereby to increase the elasticity of the shanks, causing the jaws to more firmly and securely hold a lump of sugar or cracker, as may be desired, between them, and retain it until released by a slight pressure on the shanks A A, the jaws closing automatically, due to the fact that they cross each other.
If desired, the spoon may be omitted altogether, and the implement constructed and used as sugar-tongs alone.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As a new article of manufacture, a combined spoon and sugar-tongs, constructed and adapted for use substantially as described.
2. A sugar-tongs composed of the notchstrips A A, fastened together and provided with the self -closing jaws, substantially as shown and described.
3. A combined sugar-spoon and sugar-tongs, composed of the strips A A, having a sugarbowl at one end and holding-jaws at the other end, and riveted or bolted together, as shown and described.
