(Cl. 155-123 Our invention relates to childrens furniture and in particular' to a new and improved childs feeding table and chair therefor. v 1

We provide a childs feeding table having a front recess for the mounting of a chair therein, and an insert which fill s the front recess when the chair is removed, forming a complete and unbroken table top surface. It is an object of the invention to provide a childs feeding table of the character described in which the insert is permanently attached to the table, being foldablerea'rwardly beneath the table surface to uncover the front recess and permit mounting of the chair.

Another object of the invention is to provide a feeding table of the character described in which latch means areprovided to hold the table insert in either of its two positions, the latch means being also operative to lock thechair in inserted position within the table recess. Still another object of the invention is the provision 'of a feeding table of the character described in which the mounting for the chair isadjustable to permit for variation in size of the child.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a table of the character described in which the chair is provided with legs so that it may be used unmounted as a separate chair for the table.

Qther objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent in the course of the following specification when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

usual table top 12 made ofa suitable tough plastic or the like, supported by metal legs 13 which are preferably foldable and which may also be telescopic in the usual manner to vary the height of the table. The legs 13 are also conventionally mounted on casters 14. The table top 11 has a cut-away portion 15 centered at one edge which provides a feeding recess for the mounting of the chair 11. r I

The table top .1 1 is bordered by a depending skirt 16 made of. metal and chrome-plated, which extends around its entire periphery except for the recess 15. The wall of the recess 15 is lined by a metallic strip 17 having a narrow top flange 18 which overlies the table surface.

The chair 11 also includes a foot rest 25 which is preferably made of wood and is swingably mounted upon 6 stub shafts 26 carried by angle brackets 27. The chair 11 has a seat 20, a back panel 21, and a pair of side panels 22 shaped to provide arm rests. The chair portions may be. made of wood or other rigid material and may besupplied with suitable padding 23 (shown in Fig; 4). The chair 11 also has legs 24 formed byapair of rods bent into U-shape and secured to the under-surface of the seat 20. The legs 24 permit the chair 1'1 to be used as a separate unit so that the assembly can be used as a normal table and chair when it is no longer necessary to secure the child in seated position at the table.

The assembly comprises a table 10 and a chair 11 adjustment of the foot rest 25 relative to the chair 11 is provided by an adjustment plate 28 mounted on the bottom of seat 20 and having a series of angular slots 29. A brace 30 in the form of a bent bar is pivotally mounted on-the foot rest 25, the free ends of the brace 30 extending through holes in a bracket 31 fixed to the under-surface of the foot rest. The bent central portion of. the brace 30 is sized to fit selectively within the slots 29 of the adjustment plate 28, to vary the angle of the foot rest 25. p

The table top structure includes an insert panel 33 which is sized and shaped to fit snugly within the-recess 15 of table top 12, completely filling the recess and completing the table top. The insert panel 33 has a flange 34 depending from its front edge, said flange 34 matching and complementing the skirt 16 of the table top .12.. The side and rear edges of the panel 25 are lined by a metallic strip 35 having a top flange 36.

The rear edge of panel 33 is mounted on the table top 12 by a hinge 37 which permits swinging movement of panel 33 between an extended position in which it fills the cut-away portion 15, and a retracted position in which'it is folded beneath the table top.

In the extended position of the panel 33, the top surface of said panel is flush with the top surface of the table top 12, and the front flange is alined with and flush with the skirt 16 at the front edge of the table. Releasable locking means are provided to hold the panel 33 in its extended position, such locking means comprising a pair'of bolts 38, each having areceiver 39. Each bolt 38 is in the form of a flat strip of metal having a terminal finger piece 40 and an elongated slot 41.

Eachbolt 38 ismounted adjacent the front end of the cut-away table portion 15 by a strap 42 consisting of a metal plateliaving a central off-set portion 43 sized to receive the bolt 38. The end portions of the strap are fixed to the bottom surface of table top 12 by screws 44. A flat metal'strip 45 of spring material is also held by the strap off-set portion 43 between the bolt 38 and the table top. tion 46.

A screw 47 extends through the center of the strap olf-set portion 43, through the strip 45, and through the slot 41 in bolt 38. The threaded end of screw 47 is fixed to the table so that screw 47 serves to hold strip 45 from movement, and also cooperates with slot 41 The strip 45 has a crimped terminal portolimit the sliding movement of bolt 38 through the strap 42. The receivers 39 are similar in size and shape to the straps 42, each having an off-set central portion 49. The receivers 39 are mounted on the bottom surface of insert panel 33 by screws 50, in positions to receive the ends of bolts 38.

To secure the insert panel33 in its extended position,

the panel is brought up within" recess 15 until it is flush with the table top 12 and each bolt 33 is slid into its receiver 39 until the screw 47 engages the end of slot 41. In this position, the crimped end 46 of strip 45 is held behind the end of said bolt to lock the bolt in its holding position. To release the insert panel 33, the bolts are slid rearwardly out of receivers 39 with sufficient force to cause them to slide past and beneath the crimped ends 46 of strips 45. A similar arrangement is employed to releasably lock the panel 33 in its retracted position beneath the table. This arrangement includes an elongated bar 51 having an L'-shaped bolt piece 52 at one end and another L- shaped bolt piece 53 adjacent the other end. Both bolt pieces 52 and 53 face in the same direction. The bar 51 is mounted by a pair of straps 54 and 55 which are secured beneath the table top 12 by screws 56. Screws 57 and 58 extending through the straps 54 and 55, also extend through slots 59 and 60 in the bar 51 to limit movement of said bar.

The bar 51 is mounted beneath the table top in a position to receive and lock-the insert panel 33 when the latter is swung to its retracted position, the bolt pieces 52 and 53 being slid into the receivers 39 of the panel 33. It will be noted in Fig. 4 that when the panel 33 is in its retracted position, its front flange 34 prevents it from lying parallel to the table top 12. The plane of the bolt pieces 52 and 53 are thus slightly angular with relation to the plane of the bar 51 in order to enable the bolt pieces to enter the receivers 39.

The bar 51 has a finger piece 61 at its end opposite the bolt piece 52, and at the same end a spring strip 62 having a crimped end 63. The strip 62 operates in the same manner as strip 45 to hold the bar 51 releasably in locked position.

The side panels 22 of the chair 11 have a series of slots 64 arranged in a horizontal row. A row of slots 65 in a cover plate 66 affixed to each side panel 22 registers with the slots 64. The slots 64 and 65 provide means for locking the chair 11 in adjustably mounted position within the cut-away portion 15 of the table top 12. The cover plates 66 have top lateral flanges 67 which overlie the top flange 18 of the strip 17 which borders the recess 15. As shown in Fig. 7, the lower surface of the top flanges 67 may be lined with a layer of soft material 68 such as felt to prevent damage to'the table flange 18.

The chair 11 may be mounted in the table recess 15 with the flanges 67 resting upon the flange 18 as shown in Fig. 7. In this position, the row of slots 65 in the cover plate 66 are in alinement with the bolts 38. Each bolt 38 may then be slid through a respective slot 65 and into the registering slot 64 in the chair to lock the chair 11 securely in mounted position and to prevent it from being pushed away from the table. The rows of slots 64 and 65 permit selective locked adjustment of the chair forwardly or rearwardly of the table to accommodate children of various sizes.

While a preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described herein, it is obvious that numerous additions, changes and omissions may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.

What is claimed is:

1. A childs feeding table and chair assembly comprising a table having a recess in its top, an insert sized to fill said recess and hingedly mounted on said table for swinging movement between an extended position in which it fills said recess and a retracted position in which it is located beneath the table top clear of said recess, first latch means for locking said insert in its extended position, second latch means for locking said insert in its retracted position, a chair sized to fit within said recess when said insert is in its retracted position, and means carried by said chair and cooperating with said first latch means for locking said chair in mounted position within said recess.

A childs feeding table and chair assembly comprising a table including a table top having a recess extending inwardly from its front edge, an insert panel sized to fill said recess and hingedly mounted on said table top for swinging movement between an extended position in which it fills said recess and a retracted position in which it is located beneath said table top to the rear of and clear of said recess, first latch means mounted adjacent said recess for locking said insert panel in its extended position, second latch means mounted rearwardly of said recess for locking said insert panel in its retracted position, and a chair sized to fit within said recess when said insert panel is in its retracted position, said chair having slots sized to receive said first latch means for locking said chair in mounted position within said recess.

A childs feeding table and chair assembly comprising a table including a table top having a recess extending inwardly from its front edge, an insert panel sized to fill said recess and hingedly mounted on said table top for swinging movement between an extended position in which it fills said recess and a retracted position in which it is located beneath said table top to the rear of and clear of said recess, first latch means mounted adjacent said recess for locking said insert panel in its extended position, second latch means mounted rearwardly of said recess for locking said insert panel in its retracted position, and a chair sized to fit within said recess when said insert panel is in its retracted position, said chair having slots sized to receive said first latch means for locking said chair in mounted position within said recess, said chair also having legs of sufiicient size to permit the chair to be placed at and used with the table in unmounted position when the insert panel is locked in extended position.

4. A childs feeding table and chair assembly comprising a table including a table top having a recess extending inwardly from its front edge, an insert panel sized to fill said recess and hingedly mounted on said table top for swinging movement between an extended position in which it fills said recess and a retracted position in Which it is located beneath said table top to the rear of and clear of said recess, a first pair of slide bolts mounted on the lower surface of said table top on opposite sides of said recess, a pair of bolt receivers mounted on the lower surface of said insert panel and positioned to receive the respective slide bolts to lock said insert panel in its extended position, a second pair of slide bolts mounted on the lower surface of said table top rearwardly of said recess and positioned to he slid into said bolt receivers to lock said insert panel in its retracted position, and a chair sized to fit within said recess when said insert panel is in its retracted position, said chair having bolt receivers positioned to be engaged by said first pair of bolts for locking said chair in mounted position within said recess.

An assembly according to claim 4 in which said pairs of slide bolts have respective spring strips in flush abutment therewith, said spring strips having bent ends positioned to project beyond the end of said bolts in the locked position thereof whereby to releasably maintain said bolts in said locked position.

An assembly according to claim 4 in which said chair comprises a back panel, a seat, and a pair of side panels, said side panels each having a horizontal row of apertures, and a cover plate secured to the outer surface of each panel over said apertures, each cover plate hav- N ba h 7.
