siding at Onarga, in the county of Iroquois and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Row Attachments for Corn-Planters, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a check-row attachmentforcornplanters; and itconsists in a long, narrow, rectangular frame. The rear end of the frame passes around a wheel on the plane of its axis. Said wheel is provided with an axle which has its hearings in the sides of the frame. The axle extends out on either side of the frame, and is provided with two cranksone on each side. The cranks are rigidly secured to the axle and point in opposite directipns. Toeach of these cranks is secured the end of a cord, chain, or wire, which extends forward and passes around concaved pulleys on the forward sides of the frame. That part of the cord that passes immediately in front of the frame is provided in its center with a button. A vibrating arm is pivoted to a crosspiece uniting the frame. The upper part of said arm is in the form of a C-shaped hook. To the top of the arm is secured a ball-weight, to facilitate vibratory action of the arm and insure a strokeof the slide to the full capacity of the arm. Two short arms are pivoted to the bottom of the vibratory arm. These short arms extend outward in opposite directionson the seed-slide bar, and are secured thereto by staples. The slide-bar rests in depressions formed on the under side of the frame. The device is adapted for attachment to any form of corn-planter. It will be seen by reference to the accompanying drawings that it can be easily attached or detached. By detaching the short arms from the slide-bar my improvement can be removed from the planter, or it can be engaged by uniting said arms to the slide-bar.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a corn-planter provided with my attachment. Fig. 2 indicates a perspective of the front end of the frame, showing the vibrating arm, cord, button, and pulleys. Fig. 3 shows in perspective the forward end of the frame provided with a modification of my invention.
In the accompanying drawings similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A is the slide-bar.
,B is the vibrating arm, and O the C-shaped hook formed on the top thereof.
0 is a weight-ball on top of the hook.
1) represents the pivot securing the arm B to the frame cross-piece.
E E are short arms pivoted at F to arm B.
G G are staples securing the outer ends of arms E E to the slide-bar A.
H is the front end of the frame; I I, the forward side bars, and L L the rear bars, of said frame.
J J are crossrods, serving to unite theframepieces I I and L L.
K is a cross-block uniting the sides of frame I I, and against which the forward ends of pieces L L abut. The vibrating arm B is pivoted to the front side of the cross-block K.
M M are pulleys projecting outward from the sides of the frame I I.
N is a button fixed to the front cross-piece of the cord 0.
P is the wheel within the frame, and Q is one of the cranks, keyed to the axle thereof.
In the modification, Fig. 3, P represents a bar pivoted at Q to the top of vibrating arm B. R is a pivot connecting the bottom of one of the forks c to the cross-bar P. Sis a pivot uniting the fork to the crosspiece K of the frame. T is a pivotnear the center of fork c, and U is a pivot below pivot T, which connects the lower end of fork c to the crossblock K, V is a socket-plate rigidly united to the sliding bar A. The bottom of the arm B in this modification is adapted to fit in the socket of plate V, and thereby receive and imforth its advantages, I claim as new and destated, is operated as follows: The forward My invention, after having been attached to a corn-planter in the manner hereinbefore movement of the planter causes the following wheel P to revolve, which action operates the cranks Q, and through said cranks the cord 0 is given a reciprocating motion. The button N, being secured tothe cord, is also given a corresponding motion. This button, in its reciprocating course, is drawn through the C- shaped book of the arm, thereby imparting to said arm a vibratory motion, and thus causing the seed-slide A to perform its well-known function in the seed-boxes. At each revolution of the cranks Q the'cord is moved backward and forward, and consequently the button is given a forward and backward movement. It must therefore be apparent that each move of the button causes the arm to vibrate in its moving direction.
The special advantages that I claim for this machine are, first, doing'away with unreeling and stretching eighty rods, or more, of rope; second, doing away with all side draft on the team, and avoiding getting on and off the planter at each end of the field.
Having thus described my invention and set sire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a check-row attachment for corn-planters, the combination of the operating-wheel P,
journaled in the side bars, LL, carryingcranks Q Q, for operating the seed-slide A through the medium of the cord 0, button N, pulleys.
M M, and vibrating arm B, substantially as set forth. v
2. In a check-row attachment for a cornplanter, the vibrating arm B,pivoted tocrossblock K, said arm beingtprovided with the C- shaped hook and ball 0'', and the arms E E, pivoted at F and secured by staples G to the seed-slide A, the arm B being actuated by the button N, in the manner and for the purposes specified.
3. In a check-row attachment for corn-planters, the combination of the slide A, arms E E, vibrating arm B, pivot D, cross-block K, frames H I L, and cross-rods J, the forward end of frame L abutting against the cross-block K, the several parts being united inthe manner and for the purposes specified.
4. The arm B,coustructed as described, and pivoted to cross-block K, and the short arms E E, in combination with the seed-slide A, substantially as described, and for the purposes specified.
