CHECK-ROW ATTACHMENT FOR CORN-PLANTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 1\ To. 230,456, dated July 27, 1880.
' Appneation filed May 3, 1880. (Monet) To all whom it may concern: Be it known that we, JAMEs S. Woon an 0. WILLIS VAN OsDEL, citizens of the United States, residing at Bock Island, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Bower Attachments for Corn-Planters 5 and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the `invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany in g drawings, and to letters or gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the class of check-rower attachments for corn-planters 5 and the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims. y

In the drawings, A represents a transverse beam mounted upon or forming one of the connecting cross-beams of the frame of a cornplanter, having secured at the ends thereof the vertical uprights B B, in which is journaled the transverse shaft C, carrying' upon its projecting ends the fixed driving band pulleys or wheels c c, over one of which passes the checkrow cord, wire, band, strap, or chain C', composed of any suitable material, and either plain ormarked, for communicating motion to said pulley or wheel and shaft (l, for a purpose hereinafter referred to.
D represents a sheave or pulley loosely mounted upon a iiXed shaft, d, secured in the lower ends of the metallic frame E. This frame is provided with a projecting screw-stud, e, which, in connection with the projecting end d of the shaft d, forms a means by which said frame, with its sheave or pulley, is secured to the upright B above the band pulley or wheel C. Each of the uprights B is provided with a hookedeshaped slot, I), for the reception of the projecting end d of the shaft d, and avertically-elongated slot, b', for the reception of the screw-stud e of the frame E,said frame being adjustably secured in said slotted upright by means of the screw-nuts and wash-V g g in front and rear of the large .pulley or wheel o, for the purpose of taking up the slack and guiding and producing friction on the check-row cord, wire, band, strap, or chain passingunderlsaid sheaves or pulleys g g and over the large pulley or wheel c.
H represents a pitman to be connected to the usual transverse seed-slide of a corn-planter for imparting a reciprocating movement thereto. This pitman is connected with the crank h of the vertical shaft a by a universal joint, h, for the purpose of adapting the pitman to different positions on different forms of cornplanters and at the same time obviatin g friction in its application and operation.
The shaft a passes centrally up through the` transverse beam A, with its upper end journaled in a metallic bearing-plate, a', secured to said beam. Upon said shaft, above the beam A, is mounted a fixed bevel-gear wheel, I, lwith which the Xed segmental bevel-gear J, mounted on the revolving shaft C, intermittently engages for intermittently revolving the wheel and shaft Ia, and thus communicatesa reciprocatin g movement to the seed-slide through the medium ofthe crank and pitman h H.
K represents a sliding bar mounted in the plate a', above the wheel I, and having a downwardly-projecting inclined lug, 7c, adapted to engage with the gear-wheel l for locking it in position until thrown out of en gagement therewith through the medium of the segmental gear J. This segmental gearis provided with a beveled or wedge-shaped projection, j, at its forward end, and which, as said gear is re IOO volved with the shaft C, strikes against the projecting end 7c of the sliding bar K, and forcing it backward until the lug k is thrown out of engagement with the gear-wheel I, and holding said bar in this position until the segmental gear is out of mesh with said wheel l, when a spring, 7a2, bearing upon said lug k, will again throw it into engagement with the wheel I, thus locking it in position and moving the sliding' bar K forward for the segmental gear to engage with in its nextrevolu` tion.
The object of locking the wheel I is to prevent any movement of the seed-slide or dropping' mechanism from the jolting of the machinein passing over rough ground and ditches or any other causes when not in operation and between the regular intervals of dropping the seed, said locking mechanism rigidly securing the wheel and holding the seed-slide, together with its mechanism, from moving in either direction.
L represents a clamp, in which one end of the check-row cord, wire, band, strap, or chain is secured in order to secure or adjust it at different lenglhs, according to the distance across the field. The clamp L is provided with a hook, ring, or pulley, I, playing on a horizontal bar, l', staked at each end of the eld, whereby said check-row cord, wire, band, strap, or chain is adapted to adjust or change its position to suit the position of theplanter after it has been driven across the field and back.
The pulleys or wheels c c are marked, as shown at c2, to show where the machine drops the seed, so that the marks 03 on the checkroiv cord, wire, band, strap, or chain may be adjusted relative thereto, whereby the operator can tell at any point on the field where the hills are dropped.
The operation of our improved attachment is as follows: rBhe check-row cord, wire, band, strap, or chain being passed over one of the wheels or pulleys c and under the sheaves or pulleys D g g and stretched across the field, the machine is started, when the check-row cord, wire, band, strap, or chain will revolve the wheel or pulley c and shaft C, which, through the segmental gear J, will communii cate motion to the wheel I and shaft a, and
thus operate the seed-slide or dropping mechanism through the medium of the crank and pitman H h. When the machine has crossed the field the check-row cord, wire, band, strap, or chain is transferred to the wheel or pulley c on the opposite side of the machine in going back across the field.
Ve are aware that wire, rope, or chain have been heretofore used in check-rower attachments for corn-plantersy but they are objectionable, for the reason that the wire kinks and breaks, the rope stretches and shrinks, while the chain is too heavy.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a check-rower attachment for cornplanters, the combination, with the pulley or wheel c and the check-row cord or band passing over the same, of the adjustable sheave or pulley D, arranged directly above the pulley or wheel c, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
2. In a check-rower attachment for cornplanters, the combination, with the pulley or wheel c and the check-row cord or band passing over the same, of the adjustable sheaves or pulleys D g g', substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
3. In a check-rower attachment for cornplanters, the combination of the upright B, provided with the slots b b', the metallic frame E, provided with the sheave or pulley D, shaft d d', screw-stud e, and nuts and washersj'f, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
4. The combination, with the large pulley or wheel c, of the side brackets, Gr G, provided with the curved slots g g and the sheaves or pulleys g g', adjustably secured in said slots, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
5. In a check-rower attachment for cornplanters, the combinatiolnwith the shaft C,
wheel or pulley c, and check-row cord or band passing over said wheel or pulley, of the slotted upright B I) b', slotted side brackets, Gr G g g, and the adjustable sheaves or pulleys D g g', substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
6. In a check-rower attachment for cornplanters, the combination, with the gear-wheel I, of locking mechanism for securing said wheel in position, and a revolving segmental gear, J, having a beveled or wedge-shaped projection, j, for operating said locking mechanism and gear-Wheel, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
7. In a check-rower attachment for cornplanters, the combination of the shaft G,provided with the pulleyorwheel c, and segmental gear J, having the forward beveled or wedge shaped projection j, sliding bar K, having projecting end la and inclined lug k, spring k2, shaft a, having bevel-gear wheel I, and the crank and pitma-n It H, for operating the dropping apparatus of a corn-planter, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
8. In a check-row attachment for corn-planters, the combination, with the crank and pitman h H, for operating the dropping apparatus, of a universal joint, h', for connecting said crank and pitman, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
9. In a check-rower attachment for cornplanters, the combination, with the check-row cord or band, of the clamp L, provided with a hook, l, or its equivalent, adapted to play on the horizontal bar l', substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
