UNITED A STATES PATENT OFFICE..
LUKE A. WILLIAMS, 0F MEADVILLE, MISSOURI.
CHECK-ROWER.
SIECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,756, dated February 6,1883.r
Application tiled June 21, 1882. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, LUKE A. WILLIAMS, of Meadville, in the county of Linn, 4and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Bowers; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear," and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which `it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication.
Figure 1 is a front view. Fig. 2 is a rear view. Fig. 3 is a top view, and Fig. 4 is a side view. i
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to check-rowers5 and itconsists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim. y
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents a transverse beam, which maybe one of the frame-beams of the planter of which my invention maybe said to form part, but which is not shown in the drawings. The ends of beam A have cross-pieces B B, to the ends of "which are riveted r otherwise secured U- shaped clips C, the outer sides of which have outward projecting curved or nearly n shaped brackets, D, made of spring-steel, or other elastic material. The outer sides ofsaid brackets have inward projecting shafts, E, o n which arejournaled the pulleys F, supportin a knotted rope or a wire, Gr, provided with buttons H,equal distances apart. 0n topof beaml A suitable bearings are provided for a shaft, I, the ends of which project beyond the ends of said beam A, and carry sprocket-wheels J, the arms of which are slightly curved, as shown," and forked, 'so as to engage the knots or buttons upon the ropes or wire. Eachof the sprockplaced together the arms shall project in opposite directions, thus forming practically singleforked arms. Washers J2 are placed between the disksor castings composing each sprocket-wheel, so as to spread them apart, when a rope or wire, larger than usual, is to be employed. The shaft I is provided with radially-projecting arms K, engaging a suitablyconstructed@camlever, L, pivoted upon the rear side of beam A, and connected by a rod, M, with one endof a lever, N, the other end ot'which` is to be suitably connected to the seed-slide of the planter to which motion is thus conveyed.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood. When the machine passes over the iield the-rope or wire, which has been previously stretched in the vusual manner, and which is supported upon the pulley F, engages the sprocket-wheels J, thus causing the shaft I to revolve intermittingly, and operating the Seeding mechanism.
My improved check-rower is simple, convenient, and durable, and may be constructed at LUKE A. WILLIAMS.
