Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE J. HOFFMAN, oF'NniLLsvILLE, wISooIvsIN.
FlLE FOR PAPERS.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,604, dated March 27, 1883..
' Application sied Aprn c, resi. (No model.)
The invention consists in the construction ,and combination of parts as hereinafter described, and pointed out iu the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of my invention. Fig.2 is a longitudinal section, showing the iile in a pigeonhole; and Fig. 3 is a detail view, showing the hinge.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre spending parts.
A represents the body or receptacle proper -of the tile, which is ot' an'y suitable size and preferably formed of a suitable blank of tin or similar sheet metal, or material of any kind, struck up to form the open trough, as shown, one end of which is secured vby nails, screws, or similar device to the reduced portion c of the square wooden head or block C; and B represents the hinged side or lid.. The hinged lid B is also formed cf a suitable blank of tin or other sheet metal, or other similar material,
and is of such size relative to the size ot' the box A that the curved side pieces b b thereof tit snugly outside of the side pieces c a of the box A. The under side of the lid is provided with the hinge d, which is secured to the up per edge of the portion c of the block C, and is thus adaptedto be opened and clsed for the inspection and preservation of the papers, and when closed the files may be placed horizontally in the pigeon-holes F, as shown in Fig. 2. When thus constructed papers of every description may be conveniently examined without taking them from' the file or disturbing their order, by simply turning them back from the box into or upon the lid, where they are held ready to fall in their places in the ijle upon closing the lid.
Though I have shown my invention Open at the end, it is obvious that any means might be used for closing the end of the le for thoronghly protecting the papers against dust, and not depart from the spirit of my invention.
I am aware that it is not new to use a series of compartments arranged side by side and a hingedlid covering 'the tops and front ends ct' all, or to use indexed leaves with spaces between them and itted. detachably in a case, or to form a file-holder of a box and interior file-case, the latter provided with a wire holder and spring-catch; but r What I do claim as new and of my invention 1. A nie-holder cover having sides b b and hinged to the upper edge of the inside portion, c, of the end head, C, in combination with lc- `box having the sides a a., whereby said cover can be turned back and made to rest on the upper rear edge of said head, so as to support the papers in aconvenient position for inspection, as described.
2. In a die-holder, the bottom, sides, and cover, combined with and secured on the reduced portion c of the head C, as shown and described.
3. The hinged cover B, having sides b b eX- tending down over the box and to the rear of the pivot or hinge, whereby the cover willbe guided in opening and closing as well as prevented from swinging laterally when papers are on it for inspection.
HORACE J. HOFFMAN.
