Description

May 15, 1956 J. A. LAVALLEE DOOR PLATE Filed Nov. 2, 1955 m m m m United States Patent DOOR PLATE Joseph Aim Lavallee, Springfield, Mass.
Application November 2, 1953, Serial No. 389,785
1 Claim. (Cl. 40-125) This invention relates to improvements in plates for use in connection With the lock plate or escutcheon of doors.
The principal objects of the invention are directed to the provision of a door plate which is adapted for securing to the face of a door beneath the lock plate or escutcheon and which has one or more portions extending therefrom provided with detachable secondary plates on which may be inscribed names or numbers or other identifying indicia.
According to novel features of the invention, the plate may be disposed on a door at the time the lock is fitted and subsequently the secondary plate or plates may be removed for the purpose of having a name, number or other indicia inscribed thereon.
The portion or portions for the secondary plate or plates may extend in any desired direction away from the lock plate or escutcheon so as to present the secondary plate in a convenient location.
The novel plate will be such as to lend itself to decorative or ornamental effects while at the same time the name of the occupant of the dwelling or apartment as well as the number thereof may be conveniently displayed.
All of the above objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangements of parts thereof, as will fully appear by a perusal of the description below and by various specific features which will be hereinafter set forth.
T o the above cited and other ends and with the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more readily apparent as the description proceeds, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claim hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawings where- Fig. 1 is a plan view of a door plate embodying the novel features of the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings more in detail, the invention will be fully described.
The plate of the invention is indicated generally by 2 and has an opening 4 therethrough for the transverse barrel part of a lock.
In the form of the invention being disclosed, a central portion 6 is provided for underlying a round lock plate or escutcheon. Said portion may be depressed from the upper face of the plate so as to receive the lock plate or escutcheon.
A portion 8 extends from the central portion 6 of the plate, which in the form of the invention being shown, extends laterally therefrom.
Said portion 8 of the plate carries a secondary plate 10 which as shown is elongated and is adapted to have a name or the like inscribed thereon.
ice
The portion 8 may be depressed from the plane of the upper face of the plate for receiving the secondary plate 10 and said plate 10 may be removably secured to the main plate by screws 12 or the like.
Another portion 14 of the plate extends downwardly from the central portion 6 of the plate 2 and carries a secondary plate 16 which is removably secured thereto by screws 18 or the like.
The plate portion 14 may be depressed from the upper face of the plate for receiving the plate 16 similarly to the portion 8 which receives the plate 10. Said plate 16 may be inscribed with a number or such other indicia as may be desired.
The portion 8 and the portion 14, if used, may extend from the central portion 6 in any direction desired and may be provided with openings indicated by 20 for screws or the like for securing the extension to a door.
While the plate may be made from various materials, thin metal has been found to be preferable and, of course, may be made both in right and left hand types.
Metal may be treated or ornamented in various Ways as by etching, embossing, lithographing or the like and, as an example, it will be assumed that the areas indicated by E are etched or otherwise treated to provide border B.
The plate, of course, may be made in any shape and the ornamentation may be of such color or combinations of colors as may be desired.
As the plate is shown, the portion 8 will extend to the right from the lock plate and the portion 14 will extend downwardly but they, of course, may extend in any desired direction.
The plate may carry such ornamentation as may be desired and may be accomplished in one of the ways mentioned. It is desired that the plate be pleasing in appearance and to serve its function of displaying a name, numbers, or other distinguishing features.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claim rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall Within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
An identifying plate construction for associating with a door and a lock thereof comprising in combination, a plate from a sheet of metal having a main part and a secondary part extending therefrom, said main part having a circular portion depressed downwardly from the upper face of said plate to receive and underlie the escutcheon of a lock and provided centrally thereof with an opening for the passage of a lock part therethrough, said secondary part having a portion depressed downwardly from the face of said plate and an identification plate therein, and means securing said identification plate in said depression, said plate being provided with openings for means securing said plate to a door.
