2 Claims. (CI. 30-31) This invention relates to a hair trimmer, and has for an object to provide an improved device which may be readily used by the ordinary user for trimming and cutting his own hair or that of another person.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel construction providing an easy and effective grip for the device in use, and a construction whereby the length of out can be readily controlled.

A further object is to provide a device of this character in which the standard safety razor blades, either of the double or single edged type, readily available on the market, can be used.

Still another object is to provide a construction which may be set either for cutting and trimming the hair on the head, or it may be adjusted and set for shaving such areas as under the arms, or the legs, for example.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, I have devised the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification. It is, however, to be understood the invention is not limited to the specific details of construction and arrangement shown, but may embody various changes and modifications within the scope of the invention.

The device comprises a body member 10 of any suitable material, which may be metal, wood, molded plastic or similar material, and it is convexly curved transversely on the bottom or rear wall 11, and at its forward edge is provided with a longitudinal open-sided slot or recess 12 for carrying a comb 13. This may be an ordinary plastic comb, such as is available in any store, ordinarily used for combing the hair, and the back 14 is seated in this slot or recess with the freeends of the teeth 15 projecting from the open side thereof a suitable distance, as indicated. It may be held by any suitable means, but preferably is pivotally held at one end by a screw 16 and clamped in place at its other end by a similar screw 17. At the opposite ends of the body on the top or forward side thereof are transverse raised portions 18 which are undercut, as shown at 19, on their inner sides to receive the opposite ends of a razor blade 20. The blade shown is a standard double-edged blade, but single-edged blades may be similarly used, the blade resting on the forward wall surface 21 of the body and projecting at its forward edge 22 to rest against the forward or top surface of the teeth 15 of the comb. The blade may be clamped in different positions with its cutting edge 22 at different dis- 2,744,316 r Patented May 8, 1956 2 tances from the free ends of the comb teeth 15 by suitable clamping means, to control the cutting operation and length of hair, a simple and effective clamping means comprising a plate 23 on the top or outer surface of the blade and pressed against the blade by any suitable clamp- 1 ing means, such as a thumb screw 24 mounted in a longi-' tudinal supporting bar 25, this bar being mounted at its opposite ends on the raised portions 18 of the body and secured thereon by the screws 16 and 17. At its rear edge the plate 23 is provided with a backwardly or inwardly directed longitudinal rib or flange 26 forming a stop for the rear edge of the blade 20 to prevent its being forced backwardly out of position, and this edge may have spaced lugs 27 seating in recesses 28 formed in the top wall 21 of the body to act as a guiding means for the plate 23 and keep it in proper alignment. It also prevents it from shifting longitudinally, and keeps it properly aligned and prevents it from turning out of proper position. The forward ends of the raised portions 18 are inclined backwardly and inwardly as indicated at to guide the hair inwardly toward the blade.

With the blade properly in place the device may be gripped and held by the hand of the operator, particularly at the top or back edge 29 and the comb with the blade on the top of it passed through the hair for cutting and trimming. The convexly curved rear or bottom wall 11 acts as a guide and steadying means for the comb, and by rocking the body more or less against the hair or head on this curved surface, the angle at which the comb and the blade are passed through the hair may be readily controlled and adjusted to control the length at which the hair is cut, giving very effective control of the cutting and trimming operation.

The device may also be used for shaving certain areas, as for example, under the arms or on the legs. For this purpose the blade 20 may be adjusted outwardly so that its forward edge 22 is only a short distance inwardly of the free ends of the teeth of the comb, say, for example, approximately as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and then by reversing the device a surface may be shaved as indicated at 30, Fig. 6.

If the comb should be broken it may be readily removed by loosening the screws 16 and 17, and an ordinary standard type comb purchasable in the usual stores supplying these combs may be readily mounted in the holder or 'body member.

Having thus set forth the nature of my invention, I claim:

1. A hair trimmer including a body member comprising a block of material having a substantially fiat front surface and a transversely and convexly curved back wall surface, one longitudinal edge portion of the block form ing a hand grip and the block provided with a longitudinal slot opening through the opposite edge, a comb removably mounted in the slot with its teeth projecting from the open side of the slot, a bar secured to the front of the body and extending longitudinally thereof and spaced above said front surface, a cutter blade mounted on said surface under the bar with its cutting edge on top of the comb teeth, a clamping plate on the blade, means on the bar for pressing the plate against the blade to hold it, and the convexly curved back wall surface of the body forming a rocking surface on which the angle of the teeth with respect to the surface on which the hair is being trimmed may be varied.

A hair trimmer including a body member comprising a block of material having a Substantially flat front surface and a transversely and convexly curved back wall surface, one longitudinal edge portion of the block forming a hand grip and the block provided with a longitudinal slot opening through the opposite edge, a comb removably mounted in the slot with its teeth projecting from the open side of the slot, raised transverse portions on the front side of the body at the opposite ends thereof and undercut at their inner sides, a longitudinal bar secured at its opposite ends on said raised portions, a cutter blade mounted on said front surface with its opposite ends in said undercut inner sides of the raised portions, a clamping member between the bar and the cutter blade, means on the bar for holding said clamping member against the blade to mount it on said front surface, and the convexly curved back wall surface of the body forming a rocking surface on which the angle of the comb teeth with respect to the hair surface being trimmed may be varied.
